I would love to know how you manage variegated threads...meaning....how do you choose which end to start with...and when to switch for your motifs. I know I am not explaining it but maybe you can figure out what I mean. I guess I see that your gorgeous chart with Darling thread looks like it's very organized and not random at all. Like there is a method to your madness and you can sort of control which color goes where on the motifs.
So, before I start a skein for Shades of Gold, I am actually going through the skein and cutting it apart, dividing it between the more turquoise/green blues and the more royal blues. It’s not a perfect method, by any means, meaning that I don’t measure or anything like that. I’m just eyeballing each section and cutting where I think the color changes happen. This usually gives me a 15-18” length which is perfect for the silk, since it doesn’t abrade too much.
The chart calls for two colors of gold, so I am splitting my colors according to that. Once I start stitching, I try to remember to start my next thread where I left off the last one. So that means, say for the royal blue lengths, the colors fade from a more royal blue to a lighter blue. If a thread ends at the lighter blue end, then when I start the next one, I try to remember to start at the lighter blue end to keep that flow back and forth between light to dark.
Does this make sense? I know it’s easier to see than to read, so I will make a note to discuss this in my next stitch with me. I don’t know if it’s enough for a whole video. Thanks for the idea and the sweet words! ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you for doing this! I bought this as my first coverage piece to do and am nervous to start kitting it up. I made it one of my 2020 goals to start a my first full coverage piece. So excited, hoping its not a disaster.

Jan you do the sewing method like I do. Here's a suggestion, go right to left right side up, then flip your fabric so the top is at the bottom and work right to left. I hope that makes sense.

My favorite thing about this video? Beginning of video: “She sent a 32 count, but I know I’m not going to do that.” Half hour later: “You know, I could do 32 ct tent over 1 and stitch an entire HAED in hand...that could work...” AND YOU WONDER WHY I DARE YOU!!! (My new favorite pastime is daring Jan to do crazy things!). Seriously though, this was super helpful, and I still need to do mine. It seems the “most common” is 25 count 1 over 1. So you’ve inspired me now that it’s nearly the end of October to get this figured out. I hope you are having SO much fun with the boys, and I’m sure you fed the boys well and let them sleep. @@JanHicksCreates Yes! I do need to figure out what fabric I'm going to use - I'm back to non-gridded 25 count 1 over 1. The grids kind of messed me up a bit when I did my samples (after watching yours). Great idea to bring our Farewell to Angers to Stitch Con! I'm SO excited!

Thanks, Jan. Very helpful. I always enjoy seeing how your mind works, whether it’s deciding on a fabric, yarn, or floss. I wish I had just half of your creativity! It’s good that you’re thinking ahead, though. I’ll be 60 next month and have osteoarthritis in my fingers (painful) and poor eyesight (frustrating) leading to all sorts of difficulties. “Farewell to Anger” may well be my first and last full coverage piece and I intend to fully enjoy it. Thank goodness my daughter likes to cross stitch because she may need to finish it for me, and actually that might be sort of nice. 🙂

Thank you Jan. This is very helpful and I need to get the sample pack to test stitches out on the 28 count since that’s what I ordered for my Farewell to Anger. My plan is to stitch in hand but that’ll depend on how it feels and if I’ll be able to do the sewing method. Have a great visit with the boys.

Hi Jan, I like to work full coverage on 25 cnt, two strand tent or one strand full cross. That is the best for my eyes, with good daylight I can stitch with my reading glasses without my magnifier. I prefer tent stitch as it goes faster and gives with my hand of stitching a smoother fabric. Working on 28 cnt or 32 cnt I only do for smaller pieces, one over one. I think it will be to tiring for my eyes in the years to come. Choice what is most comfortable for you, good luck!
Interesting comparison. I think the one over one look the nicest on the 28 or 32 ct. A full cross stitch gives it good body and good coverage but that could just be me.

I honestly have no experience with 25,28,32 full coverage. I have done 28 full cross with 2 strands of floss on a smaller project and liked the coverage of the 2strands. I generally stitch with 18ct & two strands of floss on my full coverage pieces HAED is where I have purchased my full coverage pieces. I love the coverage that I get with that. I have never tent stitched anything but I’ll keep it in the back of my mind just in case.
I think it is a great idea that a stitcher do their own sample swatch using different thread amounts so they can visually see the coverage.

I'm using the sewing method on a HAED in a hoop, slightly loosened fabric. On 18ct full crosses with 2 strands. Only with a very dirty hole (doing cross country) it's difficult. Have fun with your boys!
ETA I did the same thing (full cross and tent, with both 1 and 2 threads) with the samples, but after trying the 25ct I knew I had to go bigger, hence the 18ct. And I started out doing 10x10 squares for the try-out - stopped doing that pretty soon :)

Tent stitch is the same as back stitch and shows like this | on the back.
Continental stitch is much different and gives much more coverage so there is little to no warping.
Working right to left, start in the lower left whole to top right whole all the way across, will look like this / but longer on the back.
Stitching left to right is top right to bottom left all the way across ad will look the same as above on the back. Carolyn Mazzeo did a video on Continental cross stitch because she was getting warping from tent/half cross stitch.

Well, from what I’ve read over the years, tent and continental are the same thing, with the long leg on the back, and half cross is the one with the back leg going straight up and down. But either way, I am probably going to stick with full cross. Thanks for sharing!
Thank Jan. Very interesting video. The easy guide is Zweigart Lugana. I haven’t used gridded fabric and was thinking of giving it a go for my Bonded By Rain. From my research in Australia shops the DMC Magic guide is less expensive than the Zweigart Easy guide It also comes in a wider fabric which means you can buy less but not sure I like the 20 thread grid either. I’m thinking of purchasing the 25 ct Easy Guide and stitching full cross with 1 thread. So looking forward to this SAL.

@@cynthiavang6712 Hey Cynthia, how goes the battle? Staying safe I hope! Not sure where you're going with this Cynthia, but I use the tent stitch as a background filler. It's simply one-half of a cross stitch from bottom left to top right. Quick and dirty! Touch base if this answer didn't do it.
Jan...I like the 28ct tent for ease...but the cloth showing detail you will have to judge...have a great time with the boys❤️
Hi Jan, I looked it up as I was confused too... All Easy Guide with the grey is Zweigart: Lugana 25, Brittney 28, Murano 32. Magic Guide with the red grid is by DMC... I also think the one you worked on might be a Jobelan by Wichelt that (similar to Monaco by formerly Charles Craft) is a bit thicker than Zweigart fabric. As I’ve recently acquired another Afremov painting, the brush detail is so intricate yet uneven and sometimes not full coverage- so my initial inclination is to go 2 over 2 on 25, to really try to emulate the asymmetry of his actual brush strokes. But I’m a fan of the full coverage of the 28 2x2...I guess at this point it’ll have to be a game time decision! 😂. Can’t wait to see what you finally decide on.

Hi Clare! SoI have decided to go with 25 ct, 1 over 1. Mike and I talked about what we would like the final size to be, and decided that bigger is better! So that totally helped me make the decision. Maybe think about it that way and see if that helps. I’ll be ordering my fabric this week. January 1 will be here before we know it! Can’t wait! ❤️

You missed the 1x1 on the 28ct easy count. That was the one I was waiting for. Trying to figure out what would work best for me on my next big HAED without ordering several big pieces of fabric. I find I change fabric sizes depending upon the pattern, but have never used the 25 or 28ct, but want to switch to 1 strand instead of 2. Oh the decisions!! :)
Well, I didn’t actually miss the 1x1 on 28 ct. That is where I showed my Fractal bookmark, which is 1x1 on 28 ct, and talked about the different types of fabric and how much fuller the threads are on my Fractal bookmark piece. I have done multiple pieces of 1x1 on 28 ct, so I didn’t feel the need to test it. Though, now that I say that, because this fabric is a different manufacturer and thus the weave isn’t as full, I probably should test the 1x1 on 28 ct. Stay tuned! I’ll do that in my next stitch with me video! And yes, the decisions!! ❤️
I am going to be trying 1 strand full cross on 25 count. I think with all the confetti the smaller fabrics could be a challenge no matter what.
Jobelan is a cotton/rayon blend. It is lighter weight & can feel stretchy. Sometimes it looks a little shiny.
Zweigart has evenweave that is 100% cotton.
The content of the fabric affects the feel/look and also how it takes dye. A Jobelan fabric looks very different than a Linen, Cotton or other blend with identical dye.
Lugana is a cotton/rayon (viscose) blend. It is heavier & stiffer.
I started a HAED on 25 count easy grid, full cross stitch using two threads. I am having trouble with it as I am finding it is very hard to get the needle to go through and it seems too "thick" looking. (I hope that makes sense). I've tried several different needle sizes too. Thanks for demonstrating the different stitches. I may start over using one strand, full cross.

I'm with you Jan the 32 count is a bit small. I have just started working with more of the speciality threads and its nice to use 1 thread. Love the look. Can I ask you I'm going to try a SAL doing "Playing with Jaxs" I like your design with the white pumpkin and leaves where did you find it.

Those both resemble even weaves - do you not have the problem of your stitching thread slipping under the fabric threads doing one over one? Good demo anyway. I never knew HAED sent out fabric swatches.
Hi Patricia! On the evenweaves, I haven’t had a problem with the thread slipping under the fabric threads. I have had problems with that on linen, but for some reason, it doesn’t seem to happen on evenweaves. Don’t know why!

Hi Dianne! I don’t really do much on aida at this point, but I guess my main thought is to test some stitches using 1 strand and 2 strands to see which coverage you like better. 18 ct. aida is the same as stitching over 2 on 36 ct. linen and for that, I usually use 1 strand, but there are some people that prefer 2 strands. Personal preference, as always. ❤️
@@JanHicksCreates I'm using 18 ct. Easy Grid for Santa Fe and it is looking pretty good. I am stitching with 2 strands without a problem.
Beside easy and magic , do you show other gauge 8 or 9 and then down for special usage ,such as crochet?
No, these are the only ones I have looked into at this point.
I mainly work in tent stitch (continental) and I wish there would be a 30 ct for 2 over one for proper coverage in tent. 28 ct in tent 2 over 1 leaves some white showing and 32 ct in tent 2 over 1 is too bulky. For big pieces like HAED or Golden Kite, I’d rather stick with tent, so 28ct it is for me. P.s can you please tell me the colour name/number for that red? I’m looking to start The Templar Prophesy from Long Dog Sampler and I want to do it in red for the colour of their crosses on their white tabbards. I want to go for a darker, more “interesting” red and I like the colour you’ve just tested with.
