In the past few years there have been a rise in bird mite infestations which can drive people crazy with itching and the skin-crawling feeling when their eggs hatch in the skin. They are incredibly tiny but impactful and very hard to eradicate once infested. People have torn their skin to shreds from the itch and been misdiagnosed with psych disorders as a result.
