I think the idea is that it's supposed to be a tsunami (completely overdone by the special effects team, of course). In real world tsunamis, the water can recede before the wave arrives, sort of like a very low tide. I think the people behind this movie were trying to portray a more plausible interpretation of the traditional red sea crossing, even if management said "sure, but you have to make the wave bigger". Just to be clear though, I still have no intention of ever seeing this movie. It looks terrible...
Omgosh!! They got it all messed up..God split the sea in half..water on their left and right..the seafloor was supposed to be DRY..yet another miracle! When the water came down it was supposed to kill pharaoh and his army..moses being in the sea when the waters fell was completely crazy and inaccurate this movie was TERRIBLE! !!

No, you’re absolutely right and it’s a shame that they didn’t follow Exodus closely because it would have been a lot more exciting and interesting to watch if they had To paraphrase this specific part in Exodus...as the Israelites walked through the part in the waters, Pharoah’s army followed the Israelites into the gap and drew closer to the Israelites. At that point, the pillar of smoke by day and fire by night moved from the front of the Israelites to the back behind them, positioning himself between Israel and Pharoah’s army. When Pharoah’s men got close to the pillar, it’s says that God’s presence appeared at the top of the pillar, looked down on Pharoah’s army and set his sights on them. The sight of this sent terror through the ranks of Pharoah’s men and it caused a panic among them, resulting in a huge pile-up of horses, men and chariots. Then upon the last group of Israelites leaving the parted sea, God collapsed the part and the sea dashed Pharoah’s men to pieces under tons of water. Now reading this, tell me this wouldn’t be way more interesting and exciting to see depicted on the silver screen, especially the part where God’s presence appears at the top of the pillar. In my opinion, the scene we got was simply designed to take the supernatural out of the story, trying to explain it to pseudo-scientific explanation. Though if you read Exodus, you’ll see that all of God’s works were designed with a specific level of intentionality to show the Israelites and the world, the awesome power he has. Sorry for the novel, but your comment resonated with me and I’m also very disappointed with what this movie gives us. What a waste of money.
It's one of those Realistic Bible stories - Ridley Scott wanted a story where Exodus _could_ have happened in real life, no miracles. Problem is that athiests didn't give a shit, Christianists screamed "BLASPHEMY!" and mainstream viewers like us just thought it was a waste of potential. Seriously, it's mythology. You don't go "hey, there's a logical explanation for all of this" for a Norse mythology movie, you have Thor descending from a storm cloud shooting lightning from a hammer! Likewise, give us the burning bushes and staffs turning to serpents and oceans splitting apart - we're all smart enough to know it's not a documentary!
HowlingWolf518 I actually totally agree with you on that, the makers didn’t make the movie for a real audience and now nobody remembers this movie. This happens a lot with pseudo-religious movies. The creators ping pong between the source material and the desire to have full creative license and they end up making a movie with no soul that nobody cares about. On a side note, although there are still some of those BLASPHEMY! Christians out there, sometimes doing more harm to Christianity than good, most Christians like myself would just fall into group #3, viewing the movie as a total waste of potential, which it was. There are bigger problems in this world to focus on than the biblical accuracy of a Hollywood movie.

Because in this movie, Moses was a soldier and that's why he felt it was the reason God recruited him to save the Hebrews was because of his military background. Which is why he brought back weapons when he went back to Egypt instead of just a stick, because he knew he would have to fight.

Why tell the story of Moses and the Exodus if you're going to completely botch it? I never saw the movie, but these scene alone has convinced me that I would be wasting my time.
It was purposely made to be an agnostic's movie. As a man of science personally, I believe it could've happened any number ways (such as depicted in this skeptical movie) but I am also a believer and I believe wholeheartedly that the Authour of the universe and all the laws of science can bend the same laws to perform the miracles exactly as it was portrayed in the Bible (i.e., 10 commandments/Prince of Egypt). God is that infinitely powerful.

The movie has a scene with the same essence where the Egyptians are crossing the mountains and the weight of the chariots causes the path to give way which kills part of the army, it's meant more to show Ramses' impulsiveness but it's a different take on slowing them down, fire woulda been way more badass
I feel bad for Khayan. He loved Moses and clearly didn't want to go against him. But seeing his Pharaoh kill one of his own soldiers without a second thought was the last straw. He pulled away with his troops, hoping to save the rest of them, but even that wasn't enough. He was already sentenced to die for his part in Pharaoh's tyranny.
Something that I noticed that not many versions show was that Moses was a military commander. He knew how to fight and lead and it stands to reason that he roughly trained some of the men to defend the Hebrews even if by this point they were mere amateurs

This is suppose to be the most epic conclusion to the story and they blow it so bad. All they had to do was be historically realistic and have the Hebrews race across the low tide Reed Sea beating the Egyptian Chariots to the change in the tide going inland.

Scientists and historians have considered the probability that the Volcanic Eruption that destroyed part of the Mediterranean might have been part of the so called Plagues ahead of their escape and create lower tides in Egypt at that time. the dates seem to fit so far at least in theory.

I still have goosebumps on my body when I watch this chilling & thrilling scenes especially the gigantic waves enveloping the Egyptians, the lonely Egyptian Prince fighting against the mighty force & the unwavering faith of prophet Moses.
My first impressions of this scene was that it was pretty cool to watch, although a bit weird because something felt a bit odd. I found out that this movie was about Moses, and realized why people were so upset. I honestly thought it was just a random movie I've never seen before about something else. All I could think of after realizing this was, "wow...wth?"

I think people never realised that this movie was meant to show a more scientific approach of the myth. Rather than showing miracles left and right, they approached the myth with more scientific explanation and yet keep some mystic in it: the death of the first born for example. The movie wasn’t made to perfectly represent the myth, but more to show a God that has to play with nature’s law to get the job done, rather than being able to bypass it. In that approach, this scene is just perfect. Come on, stop trash talking this movie just because it did not entirely follow the myth.

Me too. I don't give too many damns about biblical accuracy (not an Abrahamist, here...). I had waited all my life to see Ancient Egypt on the big screen however (even though the original story is made up jewish slander against the Egyptians), so I like it for that reason. Also, it has character and storytelling, which is more than can be said of most of Hollywood today.
Ridley Scott proved there that he can do seriously wrong if letting himself be advised by the wrong people. The very definition of a miracle is a phenomenon that flatly goes against the everyday laws of nature. The director, trying to de-miracle the scene as much as he could, perhaps acting from personal conviction, opted to downplay the mystery of the parting of the sea, making it look just as a very big tide with some water spouts as decoration. Instead he could treat it as pure fantastical myth, which would yield more satisfying visuals, as did the 1956 version. Also, the water had no business forming a cresting wave if the bottom was flat. The narrative idea itself of a huge wave crest splashing over Moses and Ramses is beyond stupid.
The representation of miracle being so overt as to part the red sea in the bible, as being literal, is stupid anyway in modern age, so your critique is beyond stupid as well.
To everyone screaming “but God parted the sea in half!” Yes, He did, and that’s what he’s done here! You just don’t see part of it, because the camera is only ever looking one way! I don't know why so many people are whining about the sea's depiction, when the Bible also says that a strong east wind pushed the sea back, and it was as dry land; it also directly says that this process took an entire night; NOT the whole "the sea instantly parts" perception that everyone seems to have... all of this is straight from Exodus 14:21. The main thing that this scene got wrong is that the walls of water returned from both directions, not just one. Exodus 14:22.

And this process can usually be excused as "scientifically natural" such as the walls or jericho, they scientifically could have fallen due to sound, we know God helped it happened because the requirements for such a thing to happen are super specific but God did it. Same here, the bible even says that a strong wing blew overnight which then opened the sea, this is also noted on Joshuas account of the splitting sea.

Then upon the last group of Israelites leaving the parted sea, God collapsed the part and the sea dashed Pharoah’s men to pieces under tons of water.
Now reading this, tell me this wouldn’t be way more interesting and exciting to see depicted on the silver screen, especially the part where God’s presence appears at the top of the pillar.
In my opinion, the scene we got was simply designed to take the supernatural out of the story, trying to explain it to pseudo-scientific explanation. Though if you read Exodus, you’ll see that all of God’s works were designed with a specific level of intentionality to show the Israelites and the world, the awesome power he has.

It's one of those Realistic Bible stories - Ridley Scott wanted a story where Exodus _could_ have happened in real life, no miracles. Problem is that athiests didn't give a shit, Christianists screamed "BLASPHEMY!" and mainstream viewers like us just thought it was a waste of potential.
Seriously, it's mythology. You don't go "hey, there's a logical explanation for all of this" for a Norse mythology movie, you have Thor descending from a storm cloud shooting lightning from a hammer! Likewise, give us the burning bushes and staffs turning to serpents and oceans splitting apart - we're all smart enough to know it's not a documentary!

This happens a lot with pseudo-religious movies. The creators ping pong between the source material and the desire to have full creative license and they end up making a movie with no soul that nobody cares about.
On a side note, although there are still some of those BLASPHEMY! Christians out there, sometimes doing more harm to Christianity than good, most Christians like myself would just fall into group #3, viewing the movie as a total waste of potential, which it was. There are bigger problems in this world to focus on than the biblical accuracy of a Hollywood movie.

As a man of science personally, I believe it could've happened any number ways (such as depicted in this skeptical movie) but I am also a believer and I believe wholeheartedly that the Authour of the universe and all the laws of science can bend the same laws to perform the miracles exactly as it was portrayed in the Bible (i.e., 10 commandments/Prince of Egypt). God is that infinitely powerful.

The movie has a scene with the same essence where the Egyptians are crossing the mountains and the weight of the chariots causes the path to give way which kills part of the army, it's meant more to show Ramses' impulsiveness but it's a different take on slowing them down, fire woulda been way more badass
I feel bad for Khayan. He loved Moses and clearly didn't want to go against him. But seeing his Pharaoh kill one of his own soldiers without a second thought was the last straw. He pulled away with his troops, hoping to save the rest of them, but even that wasn't enough. He was already sentenced to die for his part in Pharaoh's tyranny.

Something that I noticed that not many versions show was that Moses was a military commander. He knew how to fight and lead and it stands to reason that he roughly trained some of the men to defend the Hebrews even if by this point they were mere amateurs

This is suppose to be the most epic conclusion to the story and they blow it so bad. All they had to do was be historically realistic and have the Hebrews race across the low tide Reed Sea beating the Egyptian Chariots to the change in the tide going inland.

Scientists and historians have considered the probability that the Volcanic Eruption that destroyed part of the Mediterranean might have been part of the so called Plagues ahead of their escape and create lower tides in Egypt at that time. the dates seem to fit so far at least in theory.

I still have goosebumps on my body when I watch this chilling & thrilling scenes especially the gigantic waves enveloping the Egyptians, the lonely Egyptian Prince fighting against the mighty force & the unwavering faith of prophet Moses.
My first impressions of this scene was that it was pretty cool to watch, although a bit weird because something felt a bit odd.
I found out that this movie was about Moses, and realized why people were so upset. I honestly thought it was just a random movie I've never seen before about something else.
All I could think of after realizing this was, "wow...wth?"
They almost made it look like the pharoh was the good guy.

I think people never realised that this movie was meant to show a more scientific approach of the myth. Rather than showing miracles left and right, they approached the myth with more scientific explanation and yet keep some mystic in it: the death of the first born for example.
The movie wasn’t made to perfectly represent the myth, but more to show a God that has to play with nature’s law to get the job done, rather than being able to bypass it.
In that approach, this scene is just perfect.
Come on, stop trash talking this movie just because it did not entirely follow the myth.

Me too. I don't give too many damns about biblical accuracy (not an Abrahamist, here...). I had waited all my life to see Ancient Egypt on the big screen however (even though the original story is made up jewish slander against the Egyptians), so I like it for that reason. Also, it has character and storytelling, which is more than can be said of most of Hollywood today.

Ridley Scott proved there that he can do seriously wrong if letting himself be advised by the wrong people. The very definition of a miracle is a phenomenon that flatly goes against the everyday laws of nature. The director, trying to de-miracle the scene as much as he could, perhaps acting from personal conviction, opted to downplay the mystery of the parting of the sea, making it look just as a very big tide with some water spouts as decoration. Instead he could treat it as pure fantastical myth, which would yield more satisfying visuals, as did the 1956 version. Also, the water had no business forming a cresting wave if the bottom was flat. The narrative idea itself of a huge wave crest splashing over Moses and Ramses is beyond stupid.
It's like he is trying to tell the story of Moses but left God out of the script.
The representation of miracle being so overt as to part the red sea in the bible, as being literal, is stupid anyway in modern age, so your critique is beyond stupid as well.

I don't know why so many people are whining about the sea's depiction, when the Bible also says that a strong east wind pushed the sea back, and it was as dry land; it also directly says that this process took an entire night; NOT the whole "the sea instantly parts" perception that everyone seems to have... all of this is straight from Exodus 14:21. The main thing that this scene got wrong is that the walls of water returned from both directions, not just one. Exodus 14:22.

I can count like 10 scientific/historical inaccuracies right here and i'm not talking about parting the red sea i'm talking about the fact that the israelites are portrayed as hairy white men.

@@billybro1403well yeah, but God although miraculously, tends to and has been seen working through process. And this process can usually be excused as "scientifically natural" such as the walls or jericho, they scientifically could have fallen due to sound, we know God helped it happened because the requirements for such a thing to happen are super specific but God did it. Same here, the bible even says that a strong wing blew overnight which then opened the sea, this is also noted on Joshuas account of the splitting sea.
