- The Castle of the Moors is located in the romantic and historic village of Sintra and is one of the most incredible excursions we have done here.
In addition to the trail shown in the video, it is possible to reach the Castle of the Moors by bus or tuk-tuk, but I guarantee that walking is much more exciting.
The Vila Sassetti trail is about 1.5 km, and the ascent takes 40 minutes to 1 hour, depending on your breath and hurry. We took more than 1h30 because we took several breaks for photos and to contemplate nature.
Built in the 9th century, in the year 800 AD.
The Moors inhabited there until 1147 when Sintra was handed over to D. Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal, following the conquest of the cities of Lisbon and Santarém.
In 1995, UNESCO classified the Cultural Landscape of Sintra as a World Heritage Site, of which the Castle of the Moors is a fundamental element.
In 2000, Parques de Sintra took over the management of this national monument. Since then, requalification works have been carried out, and in 2009, an Archaeological Research Field was created to reveal the human occupations of the castle, its construction phases, and living spaces. Today, the Interpretation Center of the Castle of the Moors, located in the Church of São Pedro de Canaferrim, tells the history of the peoples who succeeded and complemented each other there, from the Neolithic to the Middle Ages, through archaeological findings and multiple interactive tools.

Sintra não é uma vila é uma cidade, pequena mas é,
E é "dona" do maior concelho de Portugal.
No caso de Sintra, a denominação de "Vila" se dá pelo contexto histórico, e não apenas pelas características demográficas ou de extensão geográfica😉
Tem população para cidade mas é Vila , assim como Cascais .
Sintra é um concelho com várias freguesias, mas não é uma cidade.
O centro de Sintra é a Vila Velha.
@@quetalportugal, Sintra é uma vila como muito bem disse. O Valdemar Gomes está mal informado. Em 1982 uma nova lei veio estabelecer os parâmetros que permitiram a muitas vilas ''subir'' ao escalão de cidade. Desde essa altura até hoje o número de cidades em Portugal subiu de cerca de 50 para mais de 150. Porém algumas vilas recusaram esse upgrade por várias razões. Ponte de Lima para manter o título de ''vila mais antiga de Portugal''. Sintra e Cascais por motivos relacionados com o turismo e Oeiras a conjugação dos dois, a tradição e a imagem externa. Este quarteto de vilas sempre resistiu á verdadeira corrida ao estatuto de cidade que se tem verificado no resto do país nas últimas décadas. Portanto Sintra pelo tamanho já deveria ser uma cidade mas por interesses particulares sempre rejeitou esse estatuto. Valdemar Gomes, Sintra é sede de um município (concelho de Sintra) e não dona dele.
