  • That's right, I'm doing a #SpaceX-style rocket collaboration with Ivan Miranda: / superazote
    The brief we set each other was to design electric rockets that could land upright again and be reusable - just like Elon Musk's company SpaceX. We're both using Electric Ducted Fans (EDFs) and various control methods. In this part, I show the CAD design, the build and wiring as well as some of the coding that went into the gyroscopic flight control and flight stability systems.
    The Arduino autonomously controls the rocket stabilisation but rather than have a rocket drone, there's also manual control and override built-in as well.
    Check out Ivan's channel for his build video and his other projects!

    I‘m glad you tried your ideas, even though they failed. It gets boring just seeing the same old “well it works so let’s just copy that design” mentality. Failure is one of the greatest teachers. Let me say this, you can both actually make your ideas work without having to abandon your designs or add much in complexity. Think of what you thought was going to happen and visualize what could have gone wrong. Let me know if you want help in improving your designs, I’d be happy to help :)

      Just paused it a 1:36 to post exactly this! It's an easy assumption to make, I suppose, but it's always amusing that people who know nothing about rocketry also make the ridiculous assumption that, even though all rockets have their engines at the rear, their way might somehow be better!

      @@kasa6468 it's a stability issue. Yes, it makes gravity do the work for you when pumping fuel, but if it was more stable to put the engines on top they would do it. Look up Goddard's original designs, he had the motor above the rocket to "make it moe stable" and it didn't work.

      Yes he is. Since the rocket body is rigid, the thrust vector changes as the rocket tilts. There is no righting moment (aka the parachute effect), despite what intuition tells you at first.

    • @greggv8
      @greggv8 Před 5 lety

      A pendulum rocket would need really large control surfaces, vectoring thrust, and a very well programmed automatic flight control system to keep it on course. Essentially a control system akin to how the F-18 jet works. That plane isn't stable. The control system is constantly making corrections with the control surfaces. The pilot's input with the stick and pedals is to tell the computer to allow the aircraft to be unstable in the desired direction.
