One of my absolutely all time favorite films. Cinematography, Production design, Score, Acting.....everything working together so beautifully. Really great breakdown and analysis, man. I think you should just breakdown EVERY damn shot in this film. C'mon, it's not like you've got anything else going on right now ; )

Thank you. This is one of my favourite movies and I enjoyed this closer look at the cinematography part a lot. I could learn some and also make my own notes and perhaps make my own essay on this movie later on. Please keep up the good work, it is inspiring.

Glad to have discovered your channel! Just watched this film, my first from this director and cinematographer, and I wanted to pinpoint what made it so visually memorable. Cheers!

Great video! Just curious - how do we know which images in the film were lensed by Doyle? I know he shot a lot of the early footage when the film had a more playful tone, but from my understanding, he left production at a certain point and was replaced by Mark Lee Ping-bing, who finished the film. I've seen the movie some 30+ times, and I ask the question because I genuinely cannot tell who shot what (a testament, I think, to Wong's guiding hand).

Thats a great question, but honestly I can't tell either but much like a show where a DP does the first episode, the look has to be carried throughout, So a lot of the key decisions must of been made by Doyle and Wong at the outset.

in some scenes you can clearly see the kinetic movement of doyle and in others the restrained framing of marke lee ping-bing

Appreciate that, I figure this stuff is all subjective so why not explain it in that way. Just my estimations. Glad you enjoyed it.

It's not just shot by Doyle, Doyle quit pretty sure because they had to reshoot and he didn't like that
