    Great job of making a video that keeps the history of the Black "cowboy" alive. We have always had to take backstage to the others even though our skills were just as good or better. Fred Whitfield clearly made his way to the top on his great skills and the experiences of those who care before him. This should be on PBS.

    what a great documentary about the original cowboys! Black cowboys have always been around and it's a shame that they were not recognized by history as contributors to American history!!! I love this and am so glad to see someone take the initiative to create this!!! I am also an independent filmmaker and created a documentary on Mary Fields or Stagecoach Mary as she was know, who lived and worked in Cascade, Montana as the 1st black female who delivered U.S.. mail via a horse carriage, or some say a stagecoach. She battled increment weather, wild animals and even criminals to deliver the mail on time through rain, sleet and snow - sound familiar? I think the quote came from her history!! Please check out my promo for "Discovering Mary" and thank you for your support of African-American Western History!!!

    Cowboy culture is a mix of African + European traditions. The Fulanis of W. Africa were known for their brush burning & open grazing techniques to raise cattle. Plus the migratory routes taken by early American cowboys mimics that of the Fulani people, and not europeans.
    And it just so happens that a large number of Fulani people were deported to North America to work on cattle ranches. But, I understand the job of any good eurocentrist is to deny any African contribution to American culture.

      No, it's not a stretch... Didn't you actually listen, to what these men were talking about? Even if we were to go back as far, as to the Spaniards, then you're also dealing with the Moors - that were a dark-skinned to Black people - and their introduction of the Arabian horses and husbandry, into Spain... Learn about some real damn history, you ignoramus...

    Cowboys didn't come from Spain or Mexico. Cowboy culture is a creole culture that incorporates West African Fulani ranching and migratory techniques with Spanish/Mexican rodeo traditions. In fact is was (black)slave cattle ranchers that were first referred to as "cowBOYS" as apposed to whites who were called "cattleMEN". The famous bulldogging technique even comes from an infamous African-American cowboy.
    Cowboy culture is no more (white)Spanish than it is (black)West African in origin.

    • @newvibes789
      @newvibes789 Před 4 lety

      Ridiculous cowboys come from Spain then Mexico in particular Texas as Americans started flooding into Texas. Africans were tending to cows but on horseback as the cowboys were. Blacks did become cowboys but they did not create the cowboy. You're perpetuating a total distortion of history.

    Cowboys originated in Mexico NOT Spain Spaniards were wranglers not Cowboys. Cowboys were the Mexicans. Spain came and planted their ranches in Mexico and made Mestizos work in them from these Mestizos invented many footwear and headgear to help them. This is were the cowboy hat and boots come from. Mexicans developed it into it was today. There are NO Cowboys in Spain. Later American settlers adopted the Mexican culture and from that arose the American Cowboy.

      +Lohaiza 21 No the Cowboys originated in West Africa with the Fulanis and Hausa who've been doing for thousands of years. Those two groups were brought to the United States as slaves.

    Blacks were the first cowboys that is some funny shit! what a joke. You want to see the real cowboys look up Mexican Charreadas, so that you can get some perspective on reality. Funny shit though.
    Just so that you know, Hawaiians were cowboys before the Americans were. The king of Hawaii sent Mexicans to teach hawaiians how to be cowboys because there were too many cows roaming freely.
    Just so that you Know, the King of Spain allowed Mexicans to ride horses in the 1500s after the fall of the Mexican Empire. These Mexicans were the first cowboys and they actually joined the Spanish in conquering the Americas. Mexicans went as far north as Alaka and to the Philipines, the Carribean and Central America.
    The charreada is the National Sport of Mexico and Americans learned these skills fromt he Mexicans. Evidence of this are all the Mexican words associated with being a cowboy,, Mecate- rope, chaparrerras- chaps...
