- In many ways, Amon and Christina are your average American couple-they raise two daughters, enjoy foodie adventures and trips to the beach. There’s just one thing that drastically sets them apart, they retired in Portugal at the ages of 39 and 41. And they did so off of their government jobs, each making less than six figures. Through house hacking, side hustles and DIY home renovations, they earned, saved and invested their way to retirement as part of the Financial Independence Retire Early (FIRE) movement.

More and more people might face a tough time in retirement. Low-paying jobs, inflation, and high rents make it hard to save. Now, middle-class Americans find it tough to own a home too, leaving them without a place to retire.
We experienced the pinnacle of our era, but it is now gone. Like what happened to Rome, the corrupt administration will bring this nation to an end. My condolences go out to anyone who is close to retiring and may be worried about whether their pension will be enough to pay the rising cost of living. Insane fiscal policy, poor regulatory policy, poor energy policy, and poor foreign policy
50 and early retirement. I'm very worried about the future and where we're all heading, especially in terms of money and how to get by. I'm considering making my first investment in the stock market, but how can I do so given that the market has been in a mess for the majority of the year?
It's a wonderful moment to invest because equities are cheap, but I advise hiring a coach or an expert to help you.
@@bernardallen55 I can personally connect to that. I started working with Julie Anne Hoover, a fiduciary financial counselor, and my profits were assured. In such circumstances, I would always advise hiring a professional to help you through choppy markets and only give you indicators and strategies for figuring out when to enter and exit the market.

Joined the Navy at 18 with 7k in the bank. I did janitorial and smoked a lot of pot in high school. Left the Navy after months with 40k in the bank. Invested 30k in the S&P stocks. Started working at UPS, Exide Battery and did concrete on Saturdays. Invested 1k a month every month into it with my Financial advisor Susan Kay Mack, Cashed out 350k from the S&P Cashed out and Semi retired at 31. Took a year off. Traveled. Came home and started working part time just for the insurance, entertainment and pocket change and still investing in stocks with a 3 million net worth, Work isn't work when you don't have to work. Becoming wealthy can be done in few years. It feels like 60hr work weeks. Feel the pain of discipline early or feel the pain of regret later. I wish everyone well!
any advice on where to invest these times or a possible referral? I have been keeping a close eye on cost of the stock I currently own, not doing so good, and i’m just trying to figure out the best time to buy and what to buy more

You need to create your own process, manage risk and stick to the plan, through thick or thin or you can just seek the help of a financial advisor.
I love Amon and Christina, they're a source of inspiration. My wife and I have been in the s&p500, both through my TSP and through Fidelity in her 401k. Until around 3 years ago we were 100% in the s&p for over 15 years. Cashed in $350k from the s&p and invested with a full service advisor. We currently have $2.3million in out tax deferred savings. I retired last year at 56, while my wife retires next year. Feels good to be in control of your like having made the best investment decision. Our Rich Journey, let's go!
That's impressive man. I am curious as to what kind of investment you make now that yields that kind of profit for you. I also find myself in need of a good investment plan currently. My 401k is always maxed, no Roth for now. I've got $500k+ in a savings account.
@@profderek2204 I have my funds well diversified by using trade signals from my investment advisor Susan Lynn Hoyt a US registered CFA who you might have heard about or seen in the CNBC news and tbh it's been a huge relief. Highly diversified portfolio, mind blowing earnings and little to no engagement at all on my part. My aggressive portfolio returned almost $200k in Q2.

@@profderek2204 You don't copy manually in auto trading cuz it works programmatically but you have control over your funds and can opt out anytime. It's a sunset of algo trading. The lady I just recommended is a renowned FA and knows what the heck she's doing. You can check her out online if you'd need help. Good luck.

Agreed, I think it's important to know how much you need and understand your numbers well instead of just always wanting more. Then you get to actually enjoy the freedom you've created for yourself!

How do you just move there? How does the visa thing work? Do they give you some kind of residence visa based on investment like buying a house? Would like to know how it works.
Stay out of the cities, go small coastal towns or completely rural, portugal´s big cities are horrible.

"Our employer, when we lived in Spain and Japan, paid our housing cost." 70K and 98K salaries. Fully paid health care insurance. Of course, they made the right moves, but things like that help, a LOT.
@Dodd Frank Yep, I almost turned this off as soon as I heard "Working for the government." In a community where I used to live, near a lot of Federal Govt. and military facilities about half of the people there had retired in their 50s, and ALL of the people who retired in their 50s were govt. employees. The other people in the same community were private sector and were doing well, but practically none had plans to retire before their mid 60s.

What a heart warming episode! This is truly a love story masquerading as a FIRE story. As a self made millionaire myself, I made a heartfelt reaction video to this. Spoiler alert- I was just smiling ear to ear and marveling at how amazingly compatible this couple is. Their kids are super lucky to have them!
Of course they worked hard and deserve it all, but let's not forget they bought many homes in the early 2000s in the bay area before the tech boom. Nobody making 90k/70k a year living in the bay area are buying multiple homes today.
I have same question. The salary level is quite good but is it possible to buy 6 houses in the bay area?
Especially if some of those homes were bought around the 2008/2009 crash... They likely had some liquidity from previous sells (where they took advantage of the growing tech industry) and managed to really cash out selling and renting those homes out later.
@@korhonenemilia1816 Yeah exactly. There is noway anyone today in that salary range could ever do what they did. But kudos to them. Right place, right time.
@@rikachiu Yeah. The fact that they got lucky doesn't take away from all the hard work they put in before. Had they not saved up enough for those homes, they couldn't have taken advantage of the circumstances.

I never miss their uploads. I am 45 years old single mother living, I am hoping to retire at 50 if things keep going well for me. Bought my fifth house last month and I can't be proud more that I am right now. I am so glad I made good decisions about my finances that changed me forever now I earn monthly.

These two have a great CZcams channel and the perfect attitude to make this work. I am a Financial Advisor and I am always skeptical of people who try to retire super early. But this couple has the right attitude, are willing to make sacrifices and are very cleaver in how they manage/grow their money. They actually have a great chance of hitting their goals

98k+70k= 168k isn't bad dude especially In the early 2000's .see iam in no. Way saying that they didn't hard-work but . They said you don't need a 6 figure salary to reach fire but in this case does seem you need especially where they Lived California ain't cheap

And amon didn't make $98k consistently each year.

I envy you guys hehe, it's much simpler for you and other top-tier investors to overcome market difficulties and make millions in a short period of time; I'd really like additional tips and tactics for generating enormous profits in the near term.

I hit FI this year but will work a couple more years (by choice) but i'm also very passionate about this topic and love all the information you provide on your channel. Keep up the good work!

I just discovered you a couple of weeks ago, and my husband and I have put together our FIRE plan. 😊 We're on track to retire early in 16ish years at this moment, but we're planning to speed things up once our son is in school and I'm working full time again.

I've been semi-retired for the past 10 years and can't wait to be fully retired. I didn't focus on retirement when I was younger and wish I had made that a priority sooner. I always loved the businesses I created, so it never felt like work. But now that I'm older I don't want to waste any more time on things that aren't truly important to me.

This is almost exactly what my parents did, who also retired in their 40s. The main difference is my folks bought, renovated and sold while we lived in those homes one at a time and they invested after their first sale.

I love this family so much. What an awesome partnership. My husband and I have followed this couple for years now trying to learn from them. In that time we have become debt-free except for our mortgage and we hope to get to a place as well where we can retire early. Amazing couple and lovely kids. They provide very powerful lessons in frugality while living quality life.
I really liked this episode! This family pursues a great goal - to spend time together with their children as much as possible. It took them some time and lots of effort but that was worth it. I personally reckon they’re a great example for all of us!
I totally share their values. Work is not the thing people were created to give it all the time and energy. But the question is HOW to work less? It’s obvious that the less you spend the less you must work to make money. The fact is, an obsession with possessions distracts us from the very things that matter most in life-the things that money cannot buy. Children suffer when their parents don’t spend enough time with them. They don’t feel they are loved. That can even have long-term negative effects on their adult life. On the contrary, how much better it is when all family members just have meals together, have fun and communicate.
Money cannot buy family happiness and unity. That only comes from spending time with your family and giving them adequate love and attention. I couldn’t agree more with this saying from the Bible:
«Better to eat vegetables with people you love than to eat the finest meat where there is hate» - Proverbs 15:17. I find lots of practical advice from this wise timeless book. They were my entry to the FIRE path. They were my inspiration 3 years back. I lost my way for sometime but again, they were the ones to bring me back to the path to FIRE. While I probably wont retire early coz I love my work and my colleagues and the company treats us quite well, I am more than halfway through to FIRE because of Amon and Christina. This is incredibly inspiring but for most of us not earning upwards of $170,000 a year between two adults in a household, this situation is just a dream. Enjoy your life. They said they wouldn't be able to accomplish fire with just their incomes. They did addition side hustles in real estate to increase their income beyond their 9-5 jobs.
It also depends on where you live... With your income you might not be able to retire in the US, but you might be able to retire in Portugal or Spain, for example.
We don't pay health insurance in Spain, or it's much much lower than in the US if you chose a private health insurance, also the cost of living is way way lower. I, as a student, spend 550-600€ a month (sharing an appartment, of course, but if you add 400€ to that you can have an apartment for yourself). College here is almost free if you compare it to the US, we only pay around 1000€ a year for tuition, and there are lots of grants so that you don't pay a dime if you don't have that much income (I have only paid for one year of college and I've been there for 5 years). So yeah, it depends on the country you live in. If you gave me 2000€ a month in Spain, I'd live like a king, and that's only 24k a year.
They also live for years rent free becausetheir jobs covered the expense. That is available to very few.
@@ravindraramgulam4324 why the f**k do people ignore the math side of the equation. Also their jobs paid well because combined they made 100k plus. They don’t emphasize that their conditions were super favorable so they had the chance to be in this situation!
Great story. They worked hard. It is so hard to reach this goal with kids, but they have done well!
