  • In the last video from Compassion in a T-Shirt, Dr Stan Steindl discussed What is Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT)? In this video, he explores this question further by outlining an example session-by-session CFT therapy plan, divided into four phases and 12 sessions. A one page summary of the phases and session topics can be found here:

I'm starting CFT tomorrow and even though I have compassion for everyone else, I am so negative towards myself. The thought of CFT really scares me. My critical voice is all I know.

I really admire the fact that you are giving CFT a go. Given how scary the thought of it is, it takes a lot of courage to try it out. And the trepidation you feel is normal and common. But you sound like a very compassionate person. I hope the approach resonates for you and is helpful!

Thanks for explanation - is CFT mainly helpful for folks with chronic shame/guilt?

Thanks so much for your question! When CFT was first developed, it gave particular attention to self-criticism and shame, however, this was also in the context of Professor Paul Gilbert's work with depression. Self-criticism and shame are considered "transdiagnostic", meaning that they can be present in a range of other problems and concerns. And so, over the years, CFT has been developed and applied to a whole range of issues. Right at the moment, I am involved in studies where we are seeing whether CFT can help those who have experienced trauma, those with eating and weight concerns, and people in the community who are experience stress. And there are many other areas where CFT can be helpful. Thanks again for being in touch!

Thanks for a great explanation. Much appreciated. I am training as a counsellor and it would be an area I would love to work with further down the line. Speaking from a personal point of view, CFT changed my life. I was treated for complex ptsd due to a horrible childhood. CFT was not on offer on the NHS. fortunately it was an area that my therapist was particularly interested in. The compassion aspect, skill, imagery, touched the shame I felt more than anything else in therapy. EMDR and Cbt helped a lot but could not touch the shame and the way I felt like damaged goods. I look forward to learning more. Thank you.

Sometimes you are to blame and it is your fault, not matter how much CBT tries to convince you otherwise

    • @drstansteindl

Hi Sure Whatever. It sounds like you’ve had a tough time, just based on this and other comments you have made. I hope you are ok and finding something that helps. CFT isn’t all things for all people. Sometimes it might be part of what helps. And the bit about “it’s not your fault but it is your responsibility” is really trying to soften feelings of shame. There is a lot more to it than just that phrase, of course, but shame is a terribly painful feeling, causes us a lot of suffering, and can be a big part of depression. Easing feelings of shame is challenging and so important. I hope you find ways to work with some of these tricky, difficult aspects of being human that work for you and are helpful. Sending compassionate wishes.
