Santali is an indigenous community in India, and like many rural communities, children in Santali families are often taught to cook from a young age. Here's a simple recipe for red chicken curry that a Santali child could make with the help of an adult:
Ingredients:
1kg chicken, cut into small pieces
2 medium onions, chopped
3-4 garlic cloves, minced
1 inch ginger, grated
2-3 medium tomatoes, chopped
2 green chilies, slit
1 teaspoon cumin seeds
1 teaspoon coriander powder
1 teaspoon turmeric powder
1 teaspoon red chili powder
Salt to taste
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
Water
Fresh cilantro leaves, chopped (for garnish)
Directions:
Heat oil in a pan and add cumin seeds. Fry until they start to splutter.
Add onions, ginger, and garlic, and sauté until onions turn translucent.
Add tomatoes and green chilies, and cook until tomatoes are soft and mushy.
Add the remaining turmeric powder, coriander powder, red chili powder, and salt. Mix well and cook for a minute.
Add chicken pieces to the gravy and mix well.
Add 2-3 cups of water and bring it to a boil.
Cover the pan and let it cook for 20-25 minutes on low heat or until the chicken is fully cooked and tender.
Garnish with cilantro leaves and serve hot with steamed rice.
To make the dish a little spicier, you can increase the amount of red chili powder used in the recipe. Children should always be supervised while cooking to ensure their safety and to help them learn basic cooking techniques. By involving children in cooking, they can learn valuable life skills and develop a deeper appreciation for food and the culture of their community.

I had responsibilities at a young age growing up in the West Indies Island. I remember cooking family dinner about 10 years old and was helping out in the kitchen and hand washing clothes from younger than 10. I learned how to make fire from wood and coal. But it was a lesson and not a mandatory chore, but necessary when I had to.

Actually the upside of leaves are always dirty by shit of bat/birds. So we do use it upside down which is clear enough. I also had same confusion but my mother cleared the concept. 🙂
