  • Performance artist Natalia Duong sees art as the space where cultures coalesce.
A San Francisco Bay Area native, Natalia Duong is a performance artist, choreographer and scholar. Her interdisciplinary research
explores kinesthetic empathy as a resource for conflict resolution, community theater and the embodied transmission of trauma in people affected by Agent Orange. Duong has collaborated with artists to perform internationally in Edinburgh, Paris, Uganda and Vietnam, where she recently led a community-based devised
theater piece that was performed at the U.S. consulate in Ho Chi Minh City. Duong is also the founder and artistic director of PAO, a movement collective interested in how war is inherited in the body. A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Stanford University, Duong is currently living in Brooklyn and pursuing a master's degree in performance
studies at Tisch School of the Arts at New York University.

Beautiful & powerfully poignant story shared by Natalia Duong here. Life mapping and shared kinesthetic experiences are incredible ways to unleash our inner "eternal dancer"s from within, love ourselves into embracing who we are, and giving us the strength to know we can overcome life's challenges.

It is wonderful how Natalia has expanded dance therapy from and individual practice to the community and beyond. It would be beautiful if many of our institutions could adopt kinesthetic empathy into our practices, routines and modes of operations.

Fantastic Nat. I am an art therapist and also a survivor of paranoid schizophrenia of over forty-three years - I am now fifty seven. Your talk is majestic in content, but most of all in noble intention.

Seriously, BEST TEDX talk I’ve ever heard!
I can see a beautiful vision that people can be seen instead of feeling lonely/invisible.

Thank You Natalia. For speaking your soul and in turn speaking the truth.
The world's powers may have forgot... but we the people will never forget.

As a dance therapist, I was really impressed with how knowledgable Natalia was about dance as therapy. Her speaking of mirror neurons, kinesthetic empathy, and mirroring are exactly the ideals in the core of our work. Great job. And great idea! Life Mapping is a beautiful idea.

      Kevin Ortega Hi Jennifer,
I just am wondering what qualifications you needed to become a dance therapist?
I have no formal qualifications in dance only art and music but I used to get paid to dance in clubs so my form of dance is freestyle. I feel dance is a very emotional and spiritual experience and connects mind to body ( it feels almost mediative)...there are so many barriers caused between people and societies and since most of our expression/ communication is through body language...I do feel that dance is a wonderful way breaking through the barriers and connecting to others.
What is it like working as a dance therapist?
      Peace and love xxx

This video allowed me to be more empathetic, and supportive of individuals that have big shoes to fill with limitations. If we stand back and look at our lives, everyone has limitations and we need each other.

Bravo- good talk !!!! I realize the structure at Stanford at the end of the video and wish I was there in person when this TEDx talk was given. Though I was not, I am glad that it has been recorded for all future viewing. As a Ballroom, latin and tap dancer, and now Zooma and Strong Nation instructor I appreciate the way this talk was weaved together. Sympathy, Empathy, Action (SEA) Dance Therapy, mapping, it all makes sense. I'm still comtemplating as to whether to obtain a Masters in Dance Therapy which I didn't even know was a specialty that existed since the 1970's. This talk was brilliant in that Dance is about leading and following and all the things that Natalie spoke of and it is also healing and as a Veteran I've noticed that even the VA in some states is starting to recognize it as a legitimate means of recollecting with self and others. Amazing talk. Thank you!
