24 Inch Rainbow High VS Smart Doll Comparison

- We just bought the 24 inch Rainbow High Amaya Raine doll. We've never owned a Rainbow High doll but could not resist buying a 24 inch version. Since we are primarily collectors of Smart Doll by Danny Choo, a 24 inch anime fashion doll, we thought we would do an unboxing and comparison between the two dolls. Let's see how this 24 inch Rainbow High doll stacks up in terms of pose-ability, materials, hair, clothes, and accessories. We'll even try on some of the Rainbow High cloths on our Smart Doll and see what fits!
If it's a gift for an older child you could use the RBH doll as a starter doll, like how some people use robotic pets as a starter pet to see if their child can handle the responsibility of a real pet. If the child takes good care of the doll, spends time playing with it, makes it clothing, etc. for a fair length of time it would be a good indicator that they can handle the responsibility of a Smart Doll. If they take care of it for awhile then set it to the side they may not be ready for the pricier, more delicate doll or just may not connect with the hobby which is totally fair. Not everyone does.
Thank you! I seriously considered buying her. There’s a channel called MyFroggyStuff that does a series called “Does the Fit Fit” and they have done multiple videos showing which normal-sized Rainbow High doll fashions fit on Barbie dolls. Rainbow High definitely has great clothes that are inspired by real fashion designers like Versace, Chanel, Gucci, etc.
Hmm, you can’t take this Amaya’s hands off? The smaller dolls, their hands do come off.

I absolutely love both Rainbow High dolls and Smart Dolls.
It’s my dream to own a Smart Doll one day! So for now I just have Rainbow High dolls and random anime/manga things.
I don’t know your situation but I usually say ask for gift cards for holidays and stuff. There’s also 4 payments through PayPal.
But, if you love your RH, a smart doll is a lot of doll budget🙂

I think one of the key points of the price difference is the fact that Smart dolls are vinyl and most of Amaya is plastic. The hard plastic is far cheaper to mass produce and less time-consuming, however, it does come with a cheaper look/feel in the long run. Seam lines etc.) And another important factor is that Amaya is almost certainly factory mass-produced, which will always come with a lower product cost but also a worse pay and work environment for the workers. Whatever people may feel about Smartdoll, I think it is a very well-known fact that Danny treats his employees on his team very well. They get proper vacations, meals, and pay. Those things do come into play, along with the fact that Danny only supports local providers when it comes to wig fibers and fabrics, both to ensure local support, but also to guarantee quality and humanitarian methods. I'm not saying this to sound bias but there is a very big difference to how certain materials are produced, and how the people behind them are treated
There were really not that many fair comparison points. It was just for fun really because we were curious about the 24 inch Rainbow High. Obviously smart doll is a luxury item, and produced at higher per unit cost.
We really love our smart dolls and in general appreciate the work environment that Danny creates for his employees.

rainbow high dolls are also vinyl, i think the true factor that's differentiating the dolls are the brand name lol
I saw someone compare Smart Dolls to UCaanon Dolls from Amazon which are pretty similar. (They're about $100 on amazon) And they do come with an outfit and extra accessories and stuff. I got a Uncaanon because I just wanted the outfit and it wasn't sold separately. If you can't afford Smart Dolls (because we all know the financial toll it takes lol) or if you're just starting customizing and faceups, then they'll work well, but I will say, you get what you pay for.
My first doll was UCanaan. Then John said “I almost got you a smart doll.” It was all over after that. My UCanaan is lovely and sits on a shelf in my craft room.
Smart dolls are so gorgeous! I can personally never afford one. So I have to simply look at them through a screen.
The Rainbow High doll is still more of a play line doll for sure and she's even on sale right now so you don't even need to pay $100.
A child would probably be in complete awe of it! If someone had gotten her for me as a kid I would have been ecstatic. They didn't have anything like this when I was a kid.
Also the feet licking was hilarious, I wasn't expecting that hahaha.
Oh I can see how the RH dolls are popular. I personally would have loved a Smart Doll as a kid. I was huge into Barbie.

I have about 10 Rainbow High dolls 😅… even though I love my Smart Dolls and Dollfie Dreams. I had not seen yet these 24” RH doll and I LOVE HER 😍 I definitely want to get one for myself. Thanks for the detailed video. I actually would think about getting a face up for her !!!
Yeah a custom face up would be cool. I’ve seen some of the smaller ones redone and they look pretty cool.

I have 2 smart dolls (I got them for 300 dollars in the like final sell off of the DIY kit) and now Amaya doll for 65 dollars on sale. I'm so happy.

Great video, I collect dolls (especially Rainbow High) so I love the comparison. I can't wait to own a BJD one day. I'm not sure if I'm a fan of Smart Dolls but if I could find a BJD with a less exaggerated body and more poseability, I would need her. I'm excited to learn more from your channel!
Welcome! We are so happy to have you with us. Smart Doll will grow on you. I’m not sure we covered the extent of the pose ability of the Smart Doll. You can do a lot with them. The full kneeling is the weak point. What you lose in pose ability you gain in general attractiveness. We are going to be exploring other BJDs in comparison, probably starting with more direct vinyl competition like Dollfie Dream.

Agreed. The wardrobe is really good quality. The little button on the skirt is super tough though.
Back in the days, I feel the same about Monster High dolls. Interesting Idea, but that's it. Until the Gooliope was available. I was around 23 (?) and got this doll as a gift from my mother. Back then I thought it would be a nice start to get into Vinyl dolls. Today that doll is a nice meorable piece of my mother. She died three years ago at hospital because of longterm heart issues.
I do like tall fashion dolls a lot more than the normal versions, don't know why.
I know why I like them. It is a lot easier to reproduce human fashions at 1/3 scale than. It is at 1/6.
Love that you have that piece to remind you of your mom. 💕My mom is still with us but I’m a total mama’s girl. We are very close.
The smaller RH dolls’ clothes is really nice quality and I buy them for my 1/6 bjd.

I forgot to add that I'm an adult collecting dolls and Playmobil. I wasn't into dolls as a kid but loved my TMNT action figures and my She-Ra dolls. I'm showing my age there lol. I am loving this hobby and will check out your other videos.
Ha. Based on that I am pretty sure I’m older than you, so no worries. Age is just a number. I think we begin to realize that more as we pass our 20s.
(Note: I just subscribed because this is an interesting video and I LOVE smart dolls) And you could possible modify the clothes for the $100 doll to fit the Smart dolls. This may not work due to proportions but with extra fabric and skill you could get a nice-ish outfit for a Smart doll.
For the skirt and any large parts, you could trim off some unnecessary parts to get a good fit.
Edit: Wow! Most of them actually fitted. That’s quite a surprise because, like I said, *proportions*. You still could modify the hood and a few other things!
Yeah I felt pretty good about the hoodie and the jacket. The skirt is problematic because if you take it in, it messes with the way the pockets sit.

Those smart dolls blow rainbow high dolls dead out of the water, even the best ones like beautiful Delilah or some of the dolls from the shadow line can't hold a candle to them

I suspect she will become scarce soon because I don’t believe they are going to make that many of her. It’s not like she’s now selling out fast. There has been one sitting lonely on the shelf at my Target for weeks.

I collect the regular sized Rainbow High dolls because I'm a beginner in the doll collecting world. I do want to get a Smart Doll because they're so cute. I also really like supporting a company that treats they're employees well.

Could the skirt be altered to fit? If the waist was taken it, would it make the skirt lay wrong?
I think the skirt is problematic because of the pockets. If you took it in they would be sort of weird.
I absolutely adore the shoes. I really think I might glue some washers into them and use them as pattern weights. 😆
Keep an eye on Target, some people have found her there for just $80 instead of $100.
I have to be very honest here: I would never trust any doll/action figure over 40 cm trust to stand on their own for a longer period of time. My dolls are all resin and all 62+ cm (well, at least my BJDs), and there are differences in their ability to stand. But still, I got stands for each and every one of them. It simply gives me more peace of mind. Or they have to sit down.
Oh definitely. Much to John’s chagrin, I have balanced the girls on the piano and watching them take a tumble is not fun. Smart Dolls are pretty durable but you still never want to see a luxury item like that get whacked.
As a resin owner, what doll brand would you like to see us take a look at? I personally have been looking at Popovy sisters, Atelier Momoni, and Fairyland. Do you have another recommendation?
I just bought the 24inch Amaya. My thing is trying yo figure out clothes.
I got her for 33 at Target after going to the service counter and getting a price match online.
I think for size the American Girl dolls and the others like it. Only thing is the clothes come off babyish. However with some sewing and such could be good. It's the hips that get me.
There is a Disney 16” doll that has clothes and shoes that fit. (Supposedly. I haven’t tried it myself)

I'm going to have to watch this once I'm home from work. But I feel like a Smartdoll is a better investment....particularly in the "play" department. As far as I know this doll just comes with the clothes and accessories in the box and there really isn't anywhere to get more....while Smartdolls...well we know there's a ton of fabulous clothing on the CJ site and then all the makers out there on Esty and their own sites!

Oh this is a cool design, I wonder if I could mod a normal sized 1/3 scale doll head (Dollfie Dream probably) to fit on the neck peg of the big rainbow highs bc there's not too many thicc 1/3 scale doll bodies out there.

I only have Shiki Ichinose, who is a cortex/vinyl hybrid. As far as clothes fitting goes it should be the same.

We do love our smart dolls, but this 24” RH was surprisingly good for the price. You can’t truly compare them, but it was fun🙂
MGA Entertainment makers of Bratz, LoL OMG, and Rainbow High plays zero games. Of course I have seven SmD but love my Rainbow High. This Amaya is on my list.
She’s pretty nice. I think she is a little off target because she has elements of collector/display doll and play doll. She is collector enough that she is challenging as a play doll.
The button on the skirt is well sewn but really hard to manage with reasonable hand dexterity. The jewelry is easy to lose.
They do put a lot into the clothing and accessories though. For 99 bucks she is pretty nice.

I’m not sure. We don’t have any BJDs that size, but it’s possible 🙂

I understand that. They are not cheap. Definitely a luxury purchase. There are lay a way options though. Through Fabric Friends and Dolls in the US and also through the second hand market.

But you are comparing a almost 400.00 difference. I bought Amaya I love her. Smart dolls to me or over priced and I just don’t like they have wigs and their face. Just my opinion nice video

So glad you found us! I think Amaya might be able to wear some of the looser fitting Smart Doll clothes. A lot of things won’t go over her head of course. Pants will probably not go over her calves as they are comparatively thick.
the outfit is cute but the face and head just...idk it just...i wouldn't want it to watch me while I sleep.
She’s almost worth it for the clothes, but not quite. I am not sure what I will do with her yet. I may give her to a friend.

I like rainbow high because for one I can't afford a smart doll. Rainbow high has great quality and detail for the price you pay. Smart dolls look way too much like a human and that is what I don't like about them. Yes rainbow high is mass produced but in my opinion they have better clothes then bjds and smart dolls.
Valid points. Thanks for sharing. I know a lot of people can’t afford Smart Dolls. They are definitely at a higher price point. (They are also not as expensive as many BJDs. )
RH is definitely a doll that appeals to many collectors, and your point about them not appearing human is well taken. The Uncanny Valley is definitely a challenge for many people.
The clothes for the 24” rainbow high doll are very well made, and if the style speaks to you that’s great🥰
I enjoy her very much, but I definitely find the Smart Dolls more versatile. Also Culture Japan clothing is ridiculously well made. If you watch our other videos you can see some of them close up. (The jeans are insanely good.)
I was impressed with the mass produced RH clothes because they are mass produced, which often means a lot of short cuts and cheaper fabrics. In this case they are quite good for what they are and the price point.
