Have you tried "Shocking" your wool in an effort to get it to felt? The process is super simple. Having hot, wet wool softens, expands and opens the cuticle of the wool. Now very quickly dramatically dropping the temperature causes that cuticle to slam shut in whatever orientation its in, typically floating around in a dye bath casing a big mass of it to matt up with itself. My thoughts on exacerbating this effect to further our goals of forming locks is to do the roving/hot water/soap soak and a primary rolling, then return the pseudo lock to the hot pot for a few minutes, let it THOROGHLY get warmed up... then quickly squeeze out the excess hot water and immediately dunk it into a cold bucket. Briefly palm roll while its chilling. This SHOULD exponentially enhance the felting effect internally in the lock, requiring much reduced efforts in palm rolling to get it locked up nice and tight.
Hello Yvonne, I have been dyeing wool for a living for many many years. The pot you are using is perfect! I would love to share some of my professional tips with you. Adding the vinegar at the beginning of the dyeing process "can" makes the wool grab the dye quickly resulting in the dye not fully absorb deep into your wool. If you let your wool simmer until your water is clear, (or almost clear) then add vinegar, the dye gently absorbs evenly throughout your wool. Also, I would suggest for that size of pot, the amount of vinegar needed is no more 1/4 cup, at most. May I also suggest you watch a video on dip dyeing, you would be great at it and it is a perfect dyeing technique for dreads. Hope my tips are helpful for you Yvonne.

Another tip Yvonne :-) ...the "acid dyes" you are using are excellent for wool. Majic Dyes sold in Ontario Canada are all time my favourite, the colors are very consistent. Natural dyes can be used for wool too (eg: beets, berries, flowers, etc.), however they fade with time.

I adore the dying process. You can dip one end of a wet lock then hang it to seep down, creating an ombré effect. After it dries dip the faded end in another color…. The options go on and on.

Ok....advice for those with short hair. Start small. These are heavy on your neck and hard to adjust to sleeping in. I would ease into it making a set thinner and shorter to start. After three days I had to take them out because of my neck. They are HEAVY and if you go out in the rain they are VERY heavy. Lol
@Yvonne Williams : Get your hands on a bamboo sushi mat. It is extremely efficient for felting! When felting flat stuff, just lay it out on the mat, roll the whole thing up and work the roll back and forth, open, turn item 90 degrees, roll up again, work, and so on. Happy felting! :)

FYI... do not use anything that touched the dye for food... measuring cup, pot, spoons etc. also, you don't need anywhere near that much vinegar, a half cup or so for that pot. and you can dye wool with food coloring as well... go for the wilton paste...

I'm making a wig with a very specific design for a character. I kiiiiinda started the wig, only to change my mind a little on how the bottom of the hair will look. Is it still possible to do only the bottoms while it's already attached to everything? Or do I need to start over?
How are these to sleep in? Ive made synthetic dreds and found a whole head installed was waay to uncomfortable to sleep with . I Took them out after only a week . Thinking these may be far more comfortable.

What size did your dreads turn out to be. They look like they're between sharpie and highlight thick. How many did you get out the 1lb approximately. I'm making white with touches of grey at the top for a Drow cosplay I'm working on. I'm trying to decided between dying my hair or using a wig and knowing how many it makes might be my deciding factor. (If I can't make enough for a full head of hair I might be shaving my sides for some funky drow hair. :) ) Thank you for the tutorial! It was unbelievably helpful!

I'm working on my own set and cannot find any information on how to get a dark golden blond color on wool. I'd like it to look as natural as possible.
That color is so hard to achieve. I've tried using the Rit dyes in yellow and then add the tiniest amount of light brown Rit dye. Kind of ends up mustardy at times, then I just add more yellow. I've found that dye baths make it hard to achieve that color.... I used more of a shallow pouring type method

Removes the soap and rebalances th ph of the wool. I also follow with a rinse, a bit of hair conditioner in the water. For softness and scent.
Do you think i can use hair dye to dye it? I wanna try matching it to my haircolors :D
I havent tried it with hair dye yet but I tried it with fabric dye! you can dye them in a dyebath as shown in this video and i think you can get fabric dye at drugstores- if you have a specific haircolor you might need to order it though!
Could you use Rite dye as well? Or does the acid dye work better?
I've made dreads using Rite Dye, and yes, you can use it. A bit smelly but great colours out of it.
Thank you so much for this tutorial :). I know this video is two years old and probably won’t get an answer, but how many balls of the pre-dyed yarn did you use for a full set of dreads? I have found the yarn on Amazon, but they are only 50 gram balls.
Heya, Lady! For a full set of dreads I would recommend at least a pound of roving, this gives you enough to do a full head of at least sharpie thick dreads. I hope this is helpful!
