Ojukwu was not the most senior officer. Both he and Gowon were Lt. Cols., but Gowon, as chief of army staff therefore, superseded Ojukwu.
The most senior Military officer after all the senior Northern officers were killed in the January coup as well as Ironsi after the July counter coup of 1966, was Colonel Robert Adeyinka Adebayo.
He was brought back from a diplomatic posting and appointed Military Governor of Western Region by Gowon.

@@raymondmordi7937 Ironsi was not the officer recommended by the departing British Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, Major General Welby, as his successor, it was Brigadier Ademulegun who was murdered by the January 1966 coupists.
It was Prime Minister Balewa who ignored the recommendation and appointed Ironsi.
Gen. Welby’s reservations concerning Ironsi’s suitability proved true following the coup.
Ironsi was an opportunist but a sloppy and ethnic oriented administrator. He wasted no time in abolishing Nigeria’s federal structure with his unification decree but dragged his feet in bringing the Ibo coup plotters to trial.
It’s amazing that no Ibo person sees Ojukwu’s influence (he was Military Governor of the East, appointed by Ironsi who relied a lot on him, Ojukwu was ambitious and calculating) in the enactment of the unification decree and other centralizing and unpopular decisions taken by Ironsi that heightened distrust and anxiety of the other Regions, notably the North, that had suffered the heaviest losses of their top political and military leaderships.
Gowon was acting in good faith, genuinely desirous of peace and unity, weakly bending over backwards at Aburi in pursuit of both.
Ojukwu from the get go (from Ironsi’s time) was single minded on domination and control of Nigeria by Ibos and when that failed with Ironsi’s ouster, secession.
Every step, every decision that Ojukwu took was in sneaky furtherance of his goal of secession after that of control and domination by Ibos of Nigeria failed with Ironsi’s ouster.

It is funny how Igbos want to ignore the reality as to what caused the war. It starts with the January 1966 coup an Igbo led coup. Ironside then takes over power from an elected civilian government instead of allowing the West and the North replace their assassinated leaders. Ironside then fails to punish his fellow Igbo assassin's. Short of splitting Nigeria Gowon did everything possible to accommodate the East instead the East came up with new demands. The West had no problem with the presence of Northern troops and don't understand why the East would care. The West readily accepted the creation of more states, yet the East refused to accept and it was one of their initial demands. The East brought war upon itself and should blame itself for what it under went.

In May 1966, General Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi, Nigeria’s first military head of state promulgated the infamous Decree No. 34 of 1966, the “unification decree.” The decree effectively did away with the federal system of government practised by Nigeria since its independence from British colonial rule in 1960. In its place, the general instituted a unitary system of government as a way of discouraging “tribal loyalties and activities which promote tribal consciousness and sectional interests and which must give way to the urgent task of national reconstruction.” The decree suspended aspects of the Nigerian constitution and, with it, the military government arrogated to itself wide discretionary powers. Unknown to the general, the effects of this decree would reverberate well into Nigeria’s sixtieth year as an independent nation..

What a tragedy called the Civil War with Biafra Republic doomed to fail from the word, "Go" because a man( who failed to realise that Super Powers, such as U.S.A., USSR and Britain were not to be trusted) declared a war to oppose the Western Puppet Military Head of State of that time.
What was Ojukwu really thinking: that Super Powers and Europe (who have survived 2 World Wars who at the same time have partitioned Africa among themselves and took African Slaves for themselves and later metamorphosed into Neo-colonia Rule of the same African Continent with all shades of ECONOMIC INSTREST ) would suddenly just wake up and support a secession of a part of a country already created to serve their own colonia economic interests?
To confirm my point that Ojukwu made a very unwise and dangerous decision to secede, he ran away after exposing the entire Eastern Region to a hopeless War and needless death. Who goes to War when they are not sure of adequate supply sources for arms and ammunition in all its ramifications against an opponent who already has Airforce, Naval Force and Ground Force with sure Super Powers Clandestine Support. He already lost the War before it started.
His motive for the War was EXCELLENT but could only be achieved only after a well-thought-out plan that will guarantee success before ever embarking on it.
He was indeed a coward for running away. My respect would have been won if he had gallantly fought with the last drop of his blood. That's what true War Generals do. Phillip Effiong indeed did the right thing by surrendering. What's the point fighting a War continously whose mastermind has deserted?
Nnamdi Kanu or any other Secessionist Group MUST not repeat the same mistake.
The Nigeria of our dreams can be achieved by far other better means well thought out.
Awo is a very senseless TRIBALIST who was only interested in himself and the West when he had the opportunity to reconcile but economically deprived a people who were already disadvantaged in all sense by their defeat in the War. What wickedness to the high heavens!
Ojukwu knew that the government of that time was very irresponsible by failing to implement the Aburi Agreement. He knew that the Igbos had it all in government at the Federal Level but blew it up by the 1st Coup led by the Igbos: his kinsmen were even made Head of States after the Coup.
He just couldn't deal with his ego seeing a junior officer, Gowon, being Head of State and having the Superintendent over him and the Igbo massacre became his major excuse for secession when as far as I was concerned, his ego drove him into the beginning of his rebellion.
No amount of corruption as the excuse for the coup would have been so bad that can compare with what our country has turned out to be today. The Regional Government, however how imperfect it was, under the 1st Republic, in my humble opinion, should have been left to grow at it's own pace. That Igbo Coup should never have been conceived let alone carried out with all of its biases that left Michael Okpara and Zik alive subtlely. That Coup became the basis for every coup we have experienced that sowed the seed for the madness called Civilian Government that even commenced by the same War Lords in Civilian Agbada. Today, the country has become a complete shadow of herself when nations have moved on.
So, Ojukwu had no reason to secede when his own ethnicity started the madness that led to the Igbo massacre in the North by the aggrieved Northerners whose leaders were already taken out by the Coup.
The War on both sides was a crime against humanity.
It's been many many years after and we have not learnt anything as a country.

Ojukwwu also knew that his stubborn request were beyond the mandate of Aburi. They were there to negotiate seize fire only. They were supposed to stop all hostilities and create an avenue for the politicians to negotiate. Instead of this Ojukwu returned and started confiscating and attacking all federal installations in the east and became more bellicose. All responsibility for the present sorry state of things in Nigeria today lies on the Igbos who destroyed Nigerians constitutional democracy at it’s inception. They are are at it again. They should be allowed to form their Biafra as they have been indoctrinated to the point where they are unfit to participate in a multi ethnic democracy.

The Aburi agreement undermined the British private plan agreed with Amhadu Bello. The Ironsi coup had done exactly what the British and Ahmadu Bello feared. The Aburi agreement confirmed their fears. General Gowon was toast. He reneged when the northerners realised that the power they had been given would have been whittled down.

Ojukwu was a hero, in the sense that he encouraged and emboldened the easterners to stop running from their killers, and stand and fight as men.
Murtala Muhammad would have massacred the whole Eastern civilian population , like he did in Benin and asaba, had ojukwu not led his people to fight in defense of their lives and continuous existence.
Gowon is the coward, because he failed to realize that the hausa Fulani , were using him to fulfill their evil plans against Nigeria.
I hope gowon and danjuma are happy today, seeing the people of middle belt, being killed and made to live in in IDP camps as refugees, in the Nigeria they fought and helped hausa- Fulanis keep together, by fighting against igbos.
