[Tetris 99] the longest lobby that ever happened so far (over 18-minutes match, 784 lines cleared)

- this gets higher priority because of how fucked up that game was. this was supposed to be part of a sniping video uploaded in the future, but i decided to exclude this game from it, and upload it now instead.
a standard game lasts 6~8 minutes, and can go up to 10 when it's quite intense.
but this is something no one would ever have imagined. a whole 18-minutes game of people throwing lines at each other. and the gimmick they added makes it even more scarier...
margin time has been discovered last may. basically, after a certain time, your attacks send more damage (ONLY applies when you send lines to opponents, NOT when you defend yourself from incoming attacks).
according to amemiya's chat, margin time works this way:
- starts at 10 minutes
- increases every 20 seconds
- caps after 14 minutes (max margin time)
that means after 14 minutes, anyone will send a ridiculous amount of lines REGARDLESS of the number of badges they have. you can also have a glimpse of it by looking at the size of the attacks i'm sending. can you imagine late-game where everyone can only attack each other with 12-lines attacks? stalling is mandatory to limit lines received lol
you rarely get to reach margin time though. guess what? you likely only reach it when sniping amemiya! you definitely get why i enjoy doing so. :') - Hry

- 10 minutes to get to top 50 (already longer than average game)
- nearly died at 16:00 if i didn't save myself by spamming
- everyone sent 12 lines to each other at the end and that was scary
- near the end, the size of each attack animation shows how massive the attacks were
what a game. not the most aggressive one as i was stalling half of the time, but you don't get to play 18-minutes round that often...
At 15:23 how did you only get one line of damage with margin time?
Or how come you were not getting constant 12 lines of damage?
The maximum amount of garbage lines you can have pending on your board at a time is 12. Doremy was stalling his piece drops so he could "bypass" the damage from the other attacks before beginning his counterattack

@@johnbuttler915 you cannot get more than 12 lines of garbage in queue, so attack which was sent to him, added only 1 line, because of there were no more room for that in queue (11 was already here). you can see in top 10 that when garbage queue is empty, all incoming attacks are 12 lines (maximum)

Early in release he did 2 accidental hard drops and finished like somewhere behind 50th place or so. It was funny and the lowest I can remember.

It’s pretty much modern Tetris. The only things to learn about it specifically is that you want to maximize the amount of garbage sent per piece placed (basically do t-spins) and how the targeting works. Some people get as high as possible to get people who target kos to attack them, then switch to attackers targeting and send 200 lines of garbage
What’s the point of constantly spinning the pieces in place when your being attack instead of just placing them right away? I’ve seen a lot of other good players do it but I don’t get it. Like at 16:05
gus051 When the yellow garbage line blocks on the left flash red, that means those lines of garbage will be sent once he locks a piece down.
Due to there being a max garbage limit of 12, if Doremy is already at 12 garbage lines-in-wait and more lines are sent to him while he’s still stalling, those extra garbage lines are effectively canceled.

It's a lot more difficult to recognize those possibilities when you aren't in the heat of one of the strongest lobbies to ever exist.
Also, just because you can go for a t-spin, doesn't mean you should. It's better to play safe in a lobby like this.

Can someone explain stalling to me? I feel like I get sent garbage so quickly, but it seems like doremy can stall for ages and even after a few blocks won't get sent the garbage.
By continually moving and rotating a piece, you can delay it setting. Garbage lines will only appear on your field after you set a piece, and only if that set didn't clear any lines. He was rotating slowly near the end to buy time while his garbage queue filled up, and since it was capping at 12 garbage lines, he prevented any additional lines in the queue by stalling.

Fair enough
Part of it is practice and knowing where to place pieces by intuition, the other part is finesse. The short version is that you can place any tetrimino with only two directional inputs combined with (optionally) rotating it, sometimes before and sometimes after the movement.

why does 'stalling' help you? Why couldn't you just throw your lines out at the first opportunity?
Once you send lines, you have to rebuild before you can send more. It's more safe and sometimes defensively necessary to stall and receive lines so that you can clear them before they get added to your screen (which would pretty much be an instant ko)
