🇪🇸 A orillas del mar Cantábrico, Gijón (Xixón en asturiano) nos muestra una atractiva combinación de sabor marinero, patrimonio monumental y un urbanismo moderno al borde de la playa. Su puerto deportivo nos habla de una historia fuertemente ligada al mar. Su casco histórico ha sido declarado Bien de Interés Cultural.
Importantes construcciones tienen su origen en el pasado de la ciudad como asentamiento romano, en su desarrollo a partir del siglo XVI cuando los Reyes Católicos deciden instalar aquí un puerto y en el impulso dado a estas tierras en tiempos de la Ilustración, principalmente gracias a Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos.
Si eres amante de la playa, en Gijón/Xixón estás en un auténtico paraíso. No en vano es una de las ciudades más famosas de España por sus arenales, destacando por su solera el de San Lorenzo, en pleno corazón costero de la ciudad, y que tiene su prolongación rocosa en las playas de Los Mayanes y el Cervigón. Pero también resultan muy atractivas las de Poniente y el de El Arbeyal.

🇬🇧 On the shores of the Cantabrian Sea, Gijón (Xixón in the Asturian language) offers an attractive combination of maritime tradition, monumental heritage and modern urban planning right on the seashore. Its marina is a testament to its close links with the sea throughout its history. Its historic center has been declared an Asset of Cultural Interest.
Its various major constructions date from the city's past as a Roman settlement, from its development in the 16th century when the Catholic monarchs decided to install a port here, and from the boom enjoyed by the area at the time of the Enlightenment, primarily thanks to Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos.
If you're a beach lover, in Gijón/Xixón, you're in a true paradise. It's no wonder it's one of the most famous cities in Spain for its beaches, with San Lorenzo beach being particularly renowned. Situated right in the coastal heart of the city, it extends into rocky shores with Los Mayanes and Cervigón beaches. Additionally, the Poniente and El Arbeyal beaches are also very appealing.

Hola! Well, it's a dreary and rainy night where I am, so I really enjoyed this burst of sunshine on the coast of Spain. 😀 I knew this video would be good from the open with that spectacular view of the ocean waves crashing along that beautiful walkway. Wow. The 'Mother of the Emigrant' statue is a really poignant monument.
At 10:45, it seems like we surprised them! 😆 Hope they weren't doing anything naughty. 😁
At 14:50, that wave sure came up thoe stairs fast.
What a beautiful beach. I am definitely a beach lover. 😄 Wouldn't I love one of those nice apartments overlooking that ocean. At 29:20 they seem to go from modern to more traditional architecture. The building at 33:42 is amazing. I noticed at 32:00 that this place has lots of those Spanish benches looking out to the ocean. 🙂Love it. At 30:40, was that monument a giant thermometer? Or am I crazy.😅
At the start of this video, I certainly wasn't expecting to see a Plaza Mayor. I thought it was just along the beach. Wow, what a beautiful main square. The city seems bigger than what I expected at the beginning. Very nice. Beautiful in the marina area too. Very picturesque.

Hola! How was your week? It seems that at least there autumn is still autumn 😄 we are still in summer here, it's not that the good weather bothers me but I think it would be good if it rained a little more here too. I hope that despite the rain you are enjoying your stay in Maine.
I'm glad you enjoyed the tour, I was also very surprised by this coastal landscape since before visiting Gijon, I had seen some photos of its beach and I thought that it would not be very different from what I would find in Alicante but fortunately I was wrong, I especially like that cliff where I started the tour. At first, my idea was to start the tour next to the monument to the emigrant's mother (I agree with you, it is a very moving sculpture and I think it reflects the sadness on the mother's face very well) but seeing that beautiful cliff I had no doubt where to start the tour.
Another thing that also surprised me a lot was the strength of the waves because the tide was very high that day, in Alicante such a large change in the tide is very rare.
10:45 Hahaha I think they were as surprised as I was, I didn't expect anyone to be there. I guess they didn't expect someone to approach them with a camera attached to a bicycle.
14:50 I was already warned and as you can see I approached carefully. Thank goodness the wave wasn't very strong otherwise the tour would have been completely different 😆
29:20 You are right, approximately in that area (but towards the interior of the city) is where the area begins with more stately buildings with theaters, churches... it is surely the expansion of the city built in the 19th century.
32:00 As I told you in my previous tour, in Spain we have benches everywhere😄 those must be perfect for relaxing while looking at the sea, although as the waves were that day it was not advisable to sit on them.
No, you're not crazy 😄 That monument you're referring to is very popular in Gijon, it's called Escalerona, which could be translated as great staircase or something similar. It is the most monumental staircase in the city to access the beach. It was built in 1933 and has clocks and a thermometer.
Gijon is a small-medium sized city, it is the most common size in Spain, and although it has a small old town, it is quite cozy. In my next video about the city I take a more detailed tour of its old town, I will go through the main square again or the church that can be seen next to the beach... Furthermore, the contrast between this tour and the next one is surprising because both weather and sea level are completely different. They seem like two different cities 😄
