There was the very small Gnat in IAF service only because India could not get any decent contemporary Western fighter. It was in UK service only for export potential & apart from India had minimal success. ( Please don't think for one moment that I am blaming your father. ) Anyway the Tejas MK2 whenever it flies should cover the range problem which I think inhibits potential customers.

Currently we have 2 squadrons of Tejas and 6 squadrons of Mig-21 Bisons. Tejas Mk1 and Mk1A will replace all the Bisons. Jaguars and Mig-29s will be replaced by Tejas Mk2 if it comes on time.

In 2003 the first prototype commerce it's first flight that implies in 12 years we had a fully functioning prototype aircraft and first limit series aircraft conducted it's first flight in 2009 or in other words it took 18 years to complete the development cycle of Tejas which is actually great considering the sanction imposed on by the western countries which led to development of several system in India which helped us in the long run. Even jets like euro fighter which was developed by 4 countries and Rafale took 12 to 14 years to develop even though the Europeans were far richer than us and had prior knowledge of making jets. And also a point i forgot to mention India had no prior knowledge of making a modern jet we jumped from 2nd gen jet directly to 4th gen jet. Tejas is pride of India and it has to be perfect and it honestly is other jets suffered many incidents and crashes but find me a article where Tejas has suffered significantly or crashed. 5k+ sorties and 4k+ hrs of flight time without any mojor problem or crash it is one of the greatest achievement in aviation industry.
