Why Mobile Suit GUNDAM '79 (Still) Matters

  • MOBILE SUIT GUNDAM is a tremendous franchise that has spawned a lot of animes, mangas, merchandise and even real life robots. And even though there are countless stories that have expanded the franchise to new frontiers, everything originated in the 1979 series helmed by Yoshiyuki Tomino.
And in this video, Absa tells us why he thinks that even though Gundam 79 hasn't aged very well, it's important for Gundam fans to return to this anime, or movie trilogy, in order to understand the core concepts of the series... that and to enjoy the anime that gave birth to Universal Century and the conflict between Earth Federation and Zeon, between Char Aznable and Amuro Ray.

I would really like an up-dated version of the original series Gundam Mobile Suit- 79, although I think that's what they kind of tried to do with Gundam Seed and Gundam Seed Destiny, I would much rather have an actual Universal Century, cannon correct version.

I know this maybe a bit off-topic but what the Universal Century really needs is the Gundam ZZ (Double Zeta- UC 0087) made into a trilogy (with some up-dating), cutting out all the ridiculousness of the first half and focusing more on the second part and the first Neo Zeon war. It would also be great if could be made with an Eng dub audio track, for personal reasons I can't really watch /read Eng Subbed anime.

Gundam 0079 portrays the story of a group of youths without military training forced to fight a war on the front lines. Both sides have people who don't wish to have to kill others and who question the morality of war. Due to this, you'll often find yourself not only cheering for the central heroes, but also their antagonists since they too are fighting for a cause they are passionate about. The anime's themes of war, corruption, the value of human life and grayness of morality will also cause the viewer to reflect on morality as well. Another great aspect of the original Gundam is the fights. great video

This. I started with IBO and was scared at the scale of UC so it was an isolated incident for a while until I decided that I would once and for all watch UC Gundam. I watched 00 as a sort of 'preparation' and then began with the first three movies of the One-Year-War then just went down chronologically: Zeta, ZZ, Counterattack, and finally Unicorn. And, my God, the payoff when I got to Unicorn was unfathomable. I feel bad for anyone who started with it because it's just a disservice, Unicorn is like starting a book at its last chapter. I recently finished the original gundam series for the first time. It was so good. Now I'm on Zeta Gundam.
My first experience with Gundam in general was back in October of 2016. My mom had grounded me for stupid reasons so I couldn't play any video games for that weekend. I was allowed to watch TV, though. On Toonami, there was a marathon for Iron Blooded Orphans. It started somewhere after ep10 of season 1 so missed a lot but I didn't care. I was interested in the plot and fights. I continued to watch each week until the season was over.
Once the season finished airing on Toonami, it was announced that Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorm would fill in the time slot, starting in January of 2017. I had trouble following the plot because I didn't know I had to watch other series. It kept referencing things like Char's Rebellion, the One Year War, and the Zabi family. Things that I didn't understand until just recently. I still kept watching each week until Unicorn finished airing. Even at the end, I didn't understand what had happened.

I feel like Gundam doesn't get respect it deserves from the overall anime fandom. A lot of anime fans pretend like mecha genre didn't "grow up" until Evangelion. But Gundam was hitting mature topics all the way back in 1979. The two major themes of 0079 are the loss of innocence and the horrors of war. The scene where Amuro goes to the refugee camp to reunite with his mother and she is horrified to see him shoot the Zeon soldiers is amazingly written and hits home the fundamental themes of the series.
Not only is Gundam incredibly influential, creating the real robot genre that dominated the 80s and 90s, but I think it still has a great story. While the pacing isn't great, like many anime of the 70s and 80s, the story is timeless. Amuro being forced to grow up, Char's machinations behind the scenes, the greed and backstabbing by leaders on both sides of the conflict. I think that's why we can get something like the Origin manga, which is a streamlined retelling of 0079 with very few changes, that is still amazing.
The themes and particular aspects have been iterated on by future Gundam series and other series, meaning that 0079 inspired so many creators. In the last year, I watched Armored Trooper Votoms and Galactic Wanderer Vifam. Both of these mecha series (also made by Sunrise) are the opposites at face value. Votoms is a grim story about the horrors of war. Vifam is a hopeful story about children surviving a conflict. But both were clearly inspired by different aspects of Gundam.
At the end of the day, I think 0079 should be watched by everyone who claims to be passionate about anime. While some things about the original TV series might be dated, I think the three compilation movies are still great. I would still suggest them as a great intro to this massive franchise, that often is hard for people to get into.

It would require leadership able and willing to show the restraint to _not_ mess with it. I'm not sure such leadership exists anywhere, or may in fact have ever existed. The greatest test of humility for creators is faithfully remaking the work of another. It would indeed be a mighty thing if it were done. Modern animation techniques and audio quality could truly make a clearer vision of a grand story and great characters.

I really like your videos but got three disagreements in this case: first, I don't think Tomino's early portrayals of women come from "the times" (hence "aging") as much as his weird MGTOW-ish attitude from the late 70s to early 90s, which I suspect came from a poor relationship with his mother + a bad experience dating women. The 70s had Rose of Versailles as a super-mainstream series, so manga/anime hardly ever pandered to conservative Japanese attitudes overall & Tomino was kind of an odd one out. Even then I'd say his work from that era is about as humanistic as stuff made by a guy with weird incely hangups could possibly get & it makes sense he calmed down after getting a wife & having a daughter.
Second I think 0079's character designs are fantastic compared to most anime of any era (IMO especially now). I still love the animation & feel they did an amazing job with what they had & tried really revolutionary stuff with the visuals, some scenes being amazing by any standard, BUT there's definitely goofy stuff too and it was clearly held back by shitty schedules, work conditions (IIRC it was FREEZING in there) and low budget. The character designs though are just timeless, they don't really represent any generic 70s trends & still just feel like Yasuhiko-style. The mechs still exist in their own fascinating world, a transition period between 70s & 80s style robots, which is why I think people still collect toys of them to this day.
Third, I think actually watching the movies shows just how important the seemingly pointless stuff in the TV show really was. The mundane shit the White Base crew went through every day did a lot to put you into their shoes & a lot of seemingly "filler" episodes are full of important characterization & themes (like the bomb removal ep, the one single episode Tomino was directly credited as writing... though I'm sure ghost-wrote a bunch)

What's wrong the way he writes women? I think is much better than many action manga in the Shonen demographic.

That is not the only annoying thing about our dear youtuber.
He keeps pronouncing the word "Titans" as "Tee-tans".
I messaged him that the correct pronunciation is "Tay-tans."
He reasoned out that "Tee-tans" is how the Japanese pronounce Titans so he is correct.
Well....the Japanese also pronounce "Gundam" as "Gun-dah-mu."
