Max Raabe sings "Das Nachtgespenst"

- German star singer Max Rabe performs Friedrich Hollaender's & Rudolf Nelson's famous cabaret song "Das Nachtgespenst" (The Bogeyman) from 1930 in Ilona Ziok's internationally awarded musical film "Kurt Gerron's KARUSSELL" (world premiere: Berlin Film Festival, 1999). This song was originally sang by Kurt Gerron, one of Berlin's most fascinating entertainers of the 30s. Manuel Göttsching (www.manuel-goettschingcom) produced the sound track CD to "Kurt Gerron's KARUSSELL" for Warner and also composed and accompanied German movie star Ben Becker to Walter Mehring's "Ode an Berlin" in this movie.

So herrlich, ich kann nicht mehr.. Ich find den Herrn Raabe einfach genial, super dass es noch solche Musik gibt!
Ich kenn kaum Musiker/Künstler die soviel Stil und Sicherheit an den Tag legen, da kann ich nur sagen "Daumen hoch"!

Volksmusik , d&b, dubstep, Techno, House Hardcore Rock.... und noch etliche weiter Musikarten und Künstler durchgehört. Jetzt bin ich mal bei Max Raabe angelangt und ich muss echt sagen er ist ein wahrer Künstler, Stimme und Text sind ebenso genial wie perfekt! Echt gemütliche Musik zum chillen Danke!

AND this is why I'm ashamed to be American. So many ignorant people post on the internet! (I apologise because she's not how a great majority of us are!) Why can't people just appreciate music? Doesn't matter who it was written or used by... Max Raabe sings beautifully and in a style that seems to be a lost art. It's because of him quite a few people I know got into older music.Personally, I've loved this song since my German neighbor used to sing it. Wonderful that you posted it! Thank you!

Seewoelfin: I love David Garrett, went to see him live. Have all but one of his DVD's and all of his CD's. He doesn't play music that romanticizes German music from the era of the Holocaust. He is an artist, brilliant, and doesn't politicize his gift. He is a gift to the world. Outta here......for good.

Ich habe die CD von 1999 Kurt Gerron's Karussell, u. a. mit Ute Lemper, Bente Kahan & Max Raabe. Mit 6 Kurt Gerron-Originalaufnahmen. War ein Dokumentarfilm im TV mit gleichem Titel. Hatte gehofft, der kommt mal als DVD

dunjak111: Pls - no need to apologize for your English. I can't even TRY German! I was resp. to Seewolfin who said I ruined this music for him. So hard to communicate with so many different thoughts expressed. I hear Raabe sing old songs in German & reminded of war years - can't stand it.
Chills down my spine. So much better beautiful music out there, I only came to see who Raabe was because of Margulies' comment on TV. Didn't go back after I heard him.

@Japanamaniac Nachtgespenst is an other word für Schreckgespenst. Gespenst is an older german word for "Geist" which means ghost in english.
The real word for nightmare is "Albtraum". You see that "traum" is the german word for dream and the "Alb-" says it is not a good one.^^

Ich hab mich eher auf die "englische Übersetzung" bezogen.
Es ist keine wörtliche Übersetzung und sie ist durchaus annehmbar. "Dropped her dress" ist doch korrekt, warum nicht?
Es geht darum, dass der Geliebte sich des Nachts aus dem Schlafzimmer schleicht, um als Nachtgespenst die jungen Damen heimzusuchen... und diese auch ohne Kleidung sehen will. Und wenn er sich dann wieder nach Hause schleicht, wird er fast schon blind, wenn er sein eigenes "Nachtgespenst" genau so sehen muss. ;)

Please see the youtube videos of Raabe in Israel: he had a number of concerts there. The concerts were sold out and the audiences were mixed... holocaust survivors and their grandchildren. The elderly concert goes wept...at the memories of happier times BEFORE the horror. Get your facts straight.
Also was die englische Übersetzung angeht: Da wurde wohl mehr wert darauf gelegt, dass es sich reimt und damit "liedhaft" bleibt als auf die wörtliche Übersetzung.

Wenn mans auf Englisch übersetzt ist es eine annehmbare Interpretation.

I like Max in English, but not German. In German, I think of what was beginning in Germany. In 1938, there was Kristallnacht and that is what "The Bogeyman" reminds me of - even though it apparently was written much earlier. I am an old woman and will probably get many hateful comments for this, but as I said - I like Max. I just like him better in English.

Raabe grauenhaft... er wird überschätzt.Alles klingt bei ihm irgendwie gleich ,und auch seine Minenspiel,die ständigen Grimassen usw wiederholen sich immer und immer wieder.Das wirkt auf Dauer etwas langweilig.Das großartige Orchester gleicht es zum Teil wieder aus....
I am afraid you are wrong there. They certainly did recognise good art... but it had to be ideologically correct too. Literature and music and the fine arts too were hijacked to propagare a political agenda. The problem with most of the repertoire that Raabe sing is: the authors and texters were very frequently German Jews, who played an enormous role in the cultural scene of the 20s and 30s.

I just answered to "Zauberoma", that I think that a (little) part of his success is because of him looking very much like a Nazi. At least some people associate that time with him. Further I wrote, that I think young germans should be confronted with that past, like young americans should be confronted with Hiroschima, or Britains with Dresden, as we dont want this to ever happen, again!

Die deutsche Sprache hat alle Nuancen von 'harsch' bis zart, von arrogant bis lieblich, von himmlisch bis höllisch - die Spannweite macht die Sprache aus. Wer sie dergestalt zu nutzen weiß, ist ein Sprach-/Sprechkünstler. Und das ist Max Raabe bis in die höchsten Töne.

dieser wunderbaren Lieder immer im gleichen Stil iwas die Stimmlage und auch sein Gehabe betrifft . Das wirkt schon sehr ermüdend.Eine Raabe Aufnahme ist wie die andere - nur der Text ist anders.

In den 20er und auch noch in den 30er Jahren des 20. Jhds. war man nicht so prüde, wie heute - fast alle damaligen "Gassenhauer" waren (subtil) sexuell anzüglich.
