Pokemon Reproduction Carts and Custom Cases (Gameboy Advance). Are they complete trash?!

  • I was browsing the interwebs and found myself checking out Pokemon mods on Etsy. I was really impressed at the quality of the carts and custom cases. I quickly realized that I was able to get the original 5 Pokemon games for Gameboy Advance for $20 and custom hardshell cases for them at $20 too.
    So what is the quality of these games and cases? Are they playable? Is the build quality an good? Check out my review of these carts and cases and I will answer all of those questions!

      Hi. This doesn’t necessarily mean your game is fake. The save battery in the Gen 2 games tends to wear out over time. Once the battery starts to wear out you won’t be able to save the game anymore, and it’ll take you back to the last time you successfully saved. Eventually the battery will die completely and the game will be unplayable. Source: I have a copy of Gold that died like this about five years ago.

      @@PunchNpie yeah, since cartridges are contact pad based, small disturbances can cause a system to crash due to the disruption of electrical flow.
      And considering that the Gameboy effectively relies on a cartridge to do anything it will crash on a disturbance, where a more contemporary system like a PS2 will not.
      This being said, you probably wouldn't crash if you did this to a 3ds, as its not inherently reliant on the game to provide the code needed to run the system
      Interestingly enough this is similar to what would most likely happen if you touched your computer's motherboard while its on.

    I have a reproduced Emerald. It works fine for the most part. However the 2 main problems I have are:
    1. The cloning glitch that is famous in Emerald does not work. I do not have a work around this so I found a real copy and am waiting on it in the mail. The Pomeg glitch still works.
    2. The reproduction copy WILL NOT migrate to my Pokémon Pearl game (yes my Pearl is real). Pearl does not even recognize that a cartridge is in the GBA slot. However, I was able to get around this by trading Pokémon from my reproduced Emerald to my real FireRed and the migration worked perfectly. The reproduction and real copies of Gen 3 can trade between each other, but to migrate to Gen 4 you need a real cartridge of at least one Gen 3 game.

    When you hit start and the audio glitched out, it could've been an issue where the cartridge somehow disconnected? I've noticed with my reproduction Emerald, if you take the cart out while it's running it sounds *exactly* like that.

    are repro carts trash? Honestly it depends on the quality of the cart in my opinion. I've seen some absolute garbage carts that can't even save or use the RTC correctly, and some that are "almost" 1:1 quality, almost because obviously the internals are different, and there's a few things on the shell itself. you should also keep an eye out if the cart has a battery in it, that's a tell on how well it saves/keeps time.

      The thing about these repro or bootleg cartridges is that because they are not locked like official cartridges, they can be rewritten with whatever game you want. You will need to solder a battery to the board however depending on what games you flash to them.

    • @CozilyComfy
      @CozilyComfy Před 3 lety +5

      I know this was asked months ago, but the answer is that it really depends. Some reproduction carts work as if they were the originals, with trading, poke transfer and time based events all functioning, while others are so crap that they can't even properly keep a save. It really just depends.

      That's really weird. Saving isn't tied to the battery in 3rd gen games. My pokemon emerald still saves and I've had it since about 2006-07 (original battery). The battery has "dried out" but hasn't affected my saving whatsoever.

    • @mike9574
      @mike9574 Před 3 lety

      Jesus B yeah I had initially thought it was the batter since I had repaired some gameboy color games in the past but I think something must’ve damaged my emerald since only time based events are supposed to be shut off

      @PunchNpie  Před 3 lety

      No problem. In all reality, they are original ROMs ripped from the carts and written to new boards with a battery for backup. Not really sure how they can screw that up. It’s pretty basic tech for modern times.

    >get a shiny charmander first try (its hard to believe but im pretty sure it was normal odds and i didnt rng manipulate)
    >finding another shiny in the victory road
    >realizing the game was fake after 3 years (i was able to do the sevii islands without it erasing my data) (i still have that save but i think some of these repros specially in s/r reset your data after you beat the elite 4)

      i also should mention that i have a repro emerald that works normally but you cant do the clone glitch in the battle tower ( theres another clone glitch that im aware of and that one works, i think it involves something like having a glitched pokemon and moving it around your pc box or something)
