  • We drove 22 hours from Ohio to Ouray, Colorado. Our campsite (more like a camp spot) was at beautiful Alta Lakes. We filtered the lake water for drinking and laundry and there was a porta potty for campers (to our surprise). We went off roading to Ophir pass and Black Bear pass. The hot spring in Ouray was nice for kids. We treated all our clothes with permethrin prior to the trip and we didn't get any bug bite. Mosquitoes weren't that bad at the high elevation. Coming from Ohio, we had to acclimate. Driving in (vs. flying in) was helpful for acclimation and boys didn't go hiking until the 3rd day of camping. The younger child woke up one day, complaining about breathing but it resolved after using albuterol inhaler. Boys wore long pants and boots for hiking to prevent tick bites. We also took some diuretics just in case of developing high altitude sickness. Thankfully, for the most part, we didn't run into any health issue. The last video clip is actually Ouray, not Telluride. I didn't take a video of Telluride but I highly recommend visiting Telluride; not only it's a beautiful town but also it has really good restaurants.
