Young children could play anywhere in the neighborhood with no concern over safety. We didn't lock our front doors or cars. Neighbors all knew each other and had a sense of community. I feel sad for the young people today who are growing up in a very different harsh reality.

Has anyone else noticed that the only homes that are flooded are those that are built on a flood plain? Developers see a nice flat area for subdivisions. Deluges of water see a pathway, and homes are little impediment to the water flow.

Back in the 80's I worked in Indio. A hurricane sent a lot of rain our way. A developer had built some expensive homes close to the foothills. He had illegally altered the flood plain so the flash floods took out countless homes and a major Highway instead of following it's natural path. I know every law enforcement agency in our area went looking for him, no one ever found him. A guy who worked for him said he said it never rains here so he built over it. He said he told him it wasn't the rain here they were worried about it was the rain coming down mountains that did the damage.

It flooded like this in the past. My best friend and his family have been there since the 1960s. In 1969 the bridge in Kernville washed away. Those homes were built in the obvious flood plain.
I have been going up there since the late 1970s. We just set up deer stands in that floodplain two years ago. My buddy tried to warn a guy a few years to not build in the flood plain. The guy scoffed at his warning and said it will never flood there.

One of the White Water Rafting Companies bought a area called Frandy Park so they could land their Rafts right there in Kernville but then they decided to put up some buildings etc..which I'm sure are gone now.

    National Weather Service Storm Info:
Southern California is known for its unpredictable weather, which can include droughts, wildfires, and sudden rainstorms, depending on the season.
The National Weather Service (NWS) issues various types of warnings and advisories to help residents prepare for and respond to severe weather conditions.
In recent years, Southern California has experienced several severe winter storms, including the "Pineapple Express" storm in 2019, which brought heavy rain and caused flooding and mudslides in some areas.
In 2023, the NWS will likely continue to issue warnings and advisories for severe weather events, including winter storms, thunderstorms, and monsoonal storms.
Residents should stay informed about weather conditions by monitoring local news and weather reports, and following any evacuation orders or emergency instructions issued by local authorities.
The state and local authorities may also continue to implement measures to mitigate the impacts of severe weather events, such as building flood barriers, clearing storm drains, and providing emergency shelters.
To prepare for possible storms, residents should take steps such as securing loose items outdoors, stocking up on emergency supplies, and having a plan in place for evacuation if necessary.

There was a huge weather event in southern CA in 1938. Los Angeles flood of 1938, There was 4.4 inches of rain (110 mm) from February 27-March 1 1938. This caused minor flooding that affected only a few buildings in isolated canyons and some low-lying areas along rivers. Then just fifteen hours later on March 1, at approximately 8:45 PM, a second storm hit the area. The storm brought rainfall totals to 10 in (250 mm) in the lowlands and upwards of 32 in (810 mm) in the mountains. Major flooding happened in Los Angeles, Riverside, San Gabriel Valley. The 1938 flood destroyed 5,601 homes. The "bridge to nowhere" on the East Fork of the San Gabriel river is a remnant of the catastrophe, were the east fork road was completely washed out, and the East Fork Road project was abandoned as a result of the floods, leaving the bridge forever stranded in the middle of what is now the Sheep Mountain Wilderness.

Excellent serious reporting.... the drone footage is terrifying and amazing... (on a completely different note.... any fox shows that are not serious news, should just have a laugh track.... the world needs more laughter ❤💕... it really does).... thoughts and prayers to those affected... further thought... if there was a storm of this magnitude in 1966, then the Sequoias should be ok.... hopefully,... they are thousands of years old after all so, this isn't their first flood, or second for that matter..

I thought they said Kerrville instead of kernville. Kerrville is in Texas, and I lived there for almost 4 years. My father was from the El Paso area and my mother was from Brooklyn... so go figure..
I have nieces and their families up in Northern California, so my prayers go out to all of California that people will be safe. It's just unprecedented. What's happening to this state....I know that California is VERY beautiful, as years ago I was out there. I really didn't want to come back. I had left from New Jersey which was like zero, and it was in the month of January 2009. Also, the temperature was almost 80 when I got to California, and it really had me scratching my head.... It was really very hard for me to say goodbye to California, needless to say!
I just pray everyone will find safety on this very challenging day that they find themselves.
God bless with love and prayers,💕🙏 everybody.

Living in San Diego, it has never been this bad of my 40 years living here of the rain!!! I only recall in 1994 it rained 3 weeks on and off with just light rain but in SD that is weird. Today it is far from weird but abnormal. It's very very very rare to rain for 24 hours non stop as today it has done this. But I feel for the NorCal areas, my god! I've been there in 90s in Bay area and it's normal of constant rain but,,, not for weeks on.

driving thru california in the 1970's and stopping here and there we noticed water marks 15 ft or more on large trees along with a handwritten date beside them so atmosphere rivers along with huge snow fall are nothing new but still as damaging as entire single level houses go under water. so the drought in those areas is gone for now.
