  • The elegant Prelude Concept, which Honda shocked everyone with at last year's Japan Mobility Show, will indeed become a production vehicle, the automaker has said. However, fresh information suggests it won't pack much of a punch. As with previous iterations of the Prelude, a 2+2 configuration is rumored to be on the way for the 2019 model, according to a Japanese publication. We were hoping Honda would go for rear-wheel drive for the new Prelude so it could compete with the likes of the Subaru BRZ and Toyota GR 86, but we're not too worried because Honda has made some of the best handling performance vehicles ever with front-wheel drive.Similarly, Honda will not be going for massive power ratings. It is said by BestCarWeb that it will share a 2.0-liter four-cylinder e-HEV hybrid powertrain with the Civic and Accord. There is room for improvement with this configuration that might result in 207 horsepower. Because of this, it would be unable to compete with the BRZ twins and GR 86. And this is so even if its dimensions will be nearly comparable to theirs: 4,300 mm in length (169.3 inches), 1,790 mm in width (70.5 inches), 1,300 mm in height (51.2 inches), and 2,575 mm in wheelbase (101.4 inches). The article continues by saying that instead of a standard automatic or dual-clutch, Honda will install an electric continuously variable transmission in the next Prelude. Additionally, it eliminates the option for a stick shift, which we perceive as a lost chance. It should be noted, though, that these specs might only apply to the Japanese model; international markets may see different offerings. Is the cost an issue as well? There is speculation that the new Prelude will cost between $27,300 to $29,400 (or 4.2 million yen to 4.5 million yen), which is a few thousand dollars higher than the GR 86.
The Prelude will be manufactured in both left- and right-hand drive configurations, according to Honda. Even if the manufacturer withheld additional details, it's safe to assume that the new coupe will find buyers in America.

Honda has never been the leader in hybrids (that title belongs to Toyota). The Prelude should be a 2.4L hybrid, or something of the sort. This is basically the same size engine as the Prius. Imagine if Toyota just used the Prius hybrid system in the Camry... it would be ridiculous.
