The Original Star Trek Fun Facts

- Go back in time with these fun facts from the original Star Trek TV series. This video focuses mostly on the history and memories of William Shatner as Captain Kirk, DeForest Kelley as Dr. McCoy, Leonard Nimoy as Mister Spock, and James Doohan as Scotty the engineer of the starship Enterprise both from the show and other series and life experiences they had.
One of the stars was a hero in World War II that was shot eight times and survived thanks in part to a small silver case in his breast pocket. One of the actors appeared three different times at the gunfight at the O.K. Corral, twice on television and once on the movie screen, Star Trek being one of those appearances. This actor also appeared with the Lone Ranger three times.
Leonard Nimoy and William Shatner both had musical albums. Also, Nimoy appeared with Shatner on another show apart from Star Trek featuring a certain police officer known as T.J. Hooker.
I also look at DeForest Kelley's best known lines and some instances of his early career choice as a doctor following him his entire acting career from show to show.
See Joan Collins and Captain Kirk walk past Floyd's barber shop from the Andy Griffith Show and remember the Twilight Zone Trek connections.
Plus a couple of bonus Star Trek trivia facts from Star Trek the Next Generation and the movie with Chris Pine as Captain Kirk that somehow connects to the television series Chips.

All the spin-offs, sequels, and reboots in the world, will NEVER match the original!!!!!
That's true.
There are some amazing Fan Treks out there! Star Trek Continues is the best! Scotty is portrayed by Chris Doohan!!
No, they won't match it. They surpassed it, like DS9 did. I love TOS, without it there will be no Star Trek. It planted the seed for all sequels and prequels to it. Just like parenting, sometimes the child surpasses the parent, and that would make any parent proud!
@@spaceace1006 I like Continues also,nice show.
Wrath of Khan:
Hard to believe that William Shatner will be 93 years old on March 22nd
I know it's sure doesn't seem real that he could be that old.
He's astonishingly spry and energetic! He actually went into space at age 90!
For Shatner, it’s truly 93 years YOUNG
Yeah, time flies...at my age... way too quickly.... lolol 😅
@@spaceace1006 You beat my reply. It was just the same as yours, so it's okay.
I love the original Enterprise and the original crew!
Yep. All the spin-offs suck. TNG? All they do on that show is sit around and talk techno-gobblygook. Kirk got laid every other episode, Spock and McKoy competed with each other, subtly disliked each other, but there was a profound professional respect between them! Scotty, according to Capt. Kirk, "knows the Enterprise better than the men who built her!". And Kirk himself? Brave, bold, handsome, capable, brilliant executive commander, but also passionate and principled. What such characters hath the spin-offs to offer?
Shared the pre-trek "I'm a doctor, not a politician." quote with my daughter. McCoy was her favorite.
Big fan of TOS here. Over the decades, have probably watched the first two seasons, each episode, about 20 or more times! I don't recall McKoy ever contrasting his profession with a politician. IIRC, he did say, "I don't know Jim. I'm a doctor, not a mechanic!" (And other professions! hehe) It's hard to pick one's favorite TOS character. Kirk, Spock, Scotty and Mckoy, as well as Chekov, Sulu, and the ORIGINAL Lt. Uhura, love them all!
I met Dee Kelley several times and he was so kind and generous - a true gentleman!
Shatner gets criticized by the second string cast for being arrogant and unkind, but my experiences with him revealed a charming, thoughtful, truly kind and smart individual. I think he’s marvelous!
Shatner deserved the hate from the TOS cast,he did many unkind and selfish deeds to his fellow actors. Not cool.
i hope you all find these Star Trek facts interesting and have fun watching the video.
I can remember being 8 in the Fall Semester of 1966! I was all excited about this new TV show "Star Trek"!!
I have watched a LOT of Trek videos, and I can say with authority that this was one of the most unique and one of the very few that did not regurgitate a bunch of already-known trivia. Even the known stuff used unique images and well chosen pics. I am impressed, sir.
Thanks, I appreciate it.@@MrKennymart
All those DeForest Kelly quotes are hilarious! I'm a doctor, not a _________!
BRICKLAYER ("Devil in the Dark") = the GOAT! 😆😁🥰
Another pretty amazing correlation is how many folks who appeared on Star Trek later appeared on Columbo! Shatner, Nimoy, Koenig, William Windom, Ricardo Montalban, and a list as long as your arm of secondary characters!
The Twilight Zone as well.
Your videos bring back a lot of memories. It sure beats the reality shows of today.
Thanks
Yeah,I agree, here!I don’t like reality shows, either!I have ‘enough reality’to deal with as it is!Star Trek beat’s them all! And,of course,I grew up with this show, back in the late ⏰ 1960”s.I remember the Star Trek cartoon’s,too! As well as the early 1970”s Star Trek reruns.
Man, I'm a hopeless trekkie! I actually knew all of this.
🖖🏻😆🖖🏻
If you're a fan of only TOS, you are a, "Trekker'. If you love anything other than the original series, you are a, "Trekkie". Get it straight, fellow! :)
Me too.
D. Kelley was a leading man heartthrob for years before he moved to tv.
Leonard Nimoy wrote a book in 1975 titled, "I Am Not Spock." Then in 1995 he wrote a book titled, "I Am Spock." That seems illogical.
There's nothing illogical about making a couple million bucks off of writing
Leonard Nimoy struggled with the strong connection between himself and Spock. Over time, he determined that he did have characteristics he learned through playing the character so long. There is also a Nimoy book, “I Am Still Spock”. All very interesting!
@@brynpookc1127 I hadn't heard of the third book. Leonard Nimoy will be an Icon forever.
'The Simpsons" poked fun about that.
@@brynpookc1127I think he struggled more with being typecast.
I went for my “old guy” exam a while back and my doctor told me to relax and it won’t take long. I said aye aye Captain Kirk
He wondered why I called him that so I told him.
“You are about to boldly go where no man has gone before!!!!”
I watched all the twilight zone episodes, and the hardest one to find was the one with Takei in it because it was about racism in WWII
It's on Paramount+
Saw that one. It was quite interesting. I am guessing that the sword has some magic power to make them lose their minds?
That episode was not included in the syndication package for decades. I believe it was finally made available again sometime in the past 15 or 20 years.
another fun fact - a few years before ST, Shatner was in an episode of Outer Limits where he played an astronaut whose wife said to him: "I know you want to be out there where no man has gone before..."
weird - or maybe Roddenberry usurped the line?
Which episode of 'Outer Limits'?
@@samr.england613 sorry, should have mentioned it - the episode is called 'Cold Hands, Warm Heart'
It wouldn’t surprise me given what he did to the theme music/song, and scripts
@@canuck3169 Yep. Roddenberry wanted Alex Courage to add lyrics to the intro TOS theme music. I think Alex and maybe some others talked him out of it. It's amazing how much Roddenberry would've screwed up his own creation without the input of screenwriter, story editor, and showrunner Gene Coon. Coon ran the show from the middle of the 1rst season thru to the end of the 2nd season. By all accounts, the best episodes of TOS. With lyrics, it probably would've been as bad as 'Enterprise' intro. :(
2:57 is mind-blowing. D. Kelly's very first I'm a doctor not a .... isn't even in Star Trek. (All the other stuff I knew)
That was great- it was apparently meant to be!
Finding that one was neat. I couldn't believe it myself.
He did a really brilliant job on this video! Thank you so much. You’ve got great editing and very nice sense of humour.
Thanks
Some of the scenes of Shatner singing were of him doing a rendition of "Rocket Man" in 1978 at the Science Fiction Awards show.
William Shatner on the TV show Third Rock from the Sun. Referencing an episode of The Twilight Zone. "Once I had a vision that I was on an airplane in flight and there was a gremlin on the wing." John Lithgow referencing The Twilight Zone the movie. "OMG! So did I!"
Introduced by (a very annoyed looking) Bernie Taupin!
No, deforest Kelley actually said it in another series, which cracked me up. Sounds like you take a pass on TOS season 3? What a great gift this series has been to entertain us. Live Long & Prosper.
Dr. Mae C. Jemison, a space shuttle astronaut was in Season 6 Episode 3 of STTNG. She had already been in space before being on Star Trek.
Well you got to think of the late 50s and 60s was the infancy of television you had a lot of character actors who were in a lot of the same things and played many different characters even on the same show
How true
William Shatner appeared on Barnaby Jones in season 1 episode 2 To catch a dead man
I watched that episode a couple of months ago. It was pretty good.
Not his best work.
Man o man… !! Thank you I really got a kick out of this..great editing.. I laughed out loud several times and I I didn’t know many of the facts.. or back stories..incredible stuff.. thank you again!!
Thanks, glad you liked it!
I'm an original Trekkie, I was 9 when the original series came out and I was hopelessly hooked. Due to my connection to science fiction conventions since 1979, I've met almost all of the cast, the only 2 I missed were DeForest Kelly and Leonard Nimoy. I've had dinner (group dinner) with George Takei, have a picture with Shatner (he was in a grumpy mood, but it was 101 where we were), met Nichelle Nichols in a restaurant where she was eating dinner with Mae Jemison, who was the first black, female astronaut (Nichelle did a lot of work to get females, and people of color, into science and space). I met Majel Barrett Rodenberry and John De Lancie at a convention in Dallas. Both were very nice, John is a larger-than-life personality who had us laughing. Walter Koenig was judging a costume contest my then-4 year old daughter was in. She got so embarrassed, she sat down on the stage and pulled her tunic over her head. She charmed him to the point that my sister (who was with the kid) let him bring her to me in the dealer's room. We talked kids and he bought a unicorn statue for his own daughter. Such a nice guy. But my hands-down favorite was Jimmy Doohan. He couldn't sleep one night and I was up wandering the hotel. We met, went to a couch and sat there for a couple hours just talking about trek, illnesses (he had had his heart attack) and just got along so great. I cried so hard when he passed away.
I really have had fun meeting people at the conventions over the years, even meeting my beloved husband of 30 years now at one. :)
That's amazing to have met all those guys and have gotten a chance to have conversations with them. Thanks for sharing your memories.
I'm surprised you didn't go into your childhood. 😵💫
I know I'm enjoying the Tvcrazyman channel. Keep them coming. 👍
Thank you very much!
1:01 one way or another all smokers eventually quit.
That goes for drinkers and drug addicts too.
100% of people who drink water die. I don't touch the stuff, myself.
As a Trekkie, I learned a few things. Thanks for sharing.
Bones was the best to work with cause he was always getting into the Romulan Ale. Ha.
Star Trek inspired me to pursue career in engineering. Beam me up Scottie.
Shatner also starred in the short lived series "The Barbary Coast".
With Doug McClure. I liked it
Shatner had tons of series. He was cancelled by every television network.
Even Neil DeGrasse Tyson interviewing Shatner on StarTalk earlier this month had to be extremely diplomatic with him to keep things from getting testy. And Neil is maybe his biggest fan ever.
The original Star Trek TV series is still the Holy Grail of modern day science fiction. 🖖
Definitely a great series.
That bilbo baggins song by Nimoy almost killed me lol.
I asked my barber for a mister Spock haircut and the guy didn't know what I meant. He probably saved me from some bullying. Lol 😆
Fascinating!
A ton of interesting and cool (for us trekkies) information. Thank you.
I appreciate it. Glad you enjoyed it.
TOS fans are Trekkers. Fans of all the lame spin-offs are called, "Trekkies".
👍 Fascinating!
Loved all the star treks
Love this.
This was awesome. Thank you as a major Star Trek fan.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks
Awesome as always was never a big Trek fan but love these videos good old classics 😀
Thanks
I find it hard to believe, for anyone who checks it out, how anyone could not be an Original Star Trek fan.
Good stuff! Thank you.
@5:50, I've heard Shatner talk about that. For a while, he was working at the Papermill Playhouse in PA and sleeping in a camper behind the theater. I would bet he spent most of his time in the theater, not in the camper at all, except to sleep.
Very interesting. And may I add, not in a trivial way.
What exactly do you mean? "Very interesting", has no real meaning. "Not in a trivial way" (pertaining to, "very interesting") has even LESS meaning. Not trying to be a 'troll' or a smart-ass, just saying. " Uninteresting in a serious way". Meaningless.
Great collection of fun facts! These actors were all so amazing! ...Though William Shatner is the most awesome having actually been to space.
What is amazing is that he was able to stand the Gforce of the blast off. At 90 yrs old, no less. I wasn't a big fan of his. I liked Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelly, Nichelle Nichols.
👍👍
Fun seeing the various characters played by the STOS cast.
This is the ultimate star trek classic star trek this will always be star trek at its best original will always be better great facts
😀
😀👍
I enjoyed this video. You're a fountain of knowledge.
I agree about William Shatner’s age!It will be hard to believe, that he’ll be;93 year’s old on March 22nd!My older sister’s birthday 🎂 is also in March! It was on March 1,2024,and she was born in 1956.
Time goes by fast.
Very fun facts.
Live long and prosper.
And I was on set for Star Trek.
When James Doohan (Scotty) gained weight, it drastically changed his appearance.
I read he gained weight while quitting smoking.
I enjoyed this very much. You have many things that I have never heard of.
I love your soft spoken voice and accent. I am going to subscribe and come back to visit your channel.
Cheers from Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan!🇨🇦🍺🇨🇦
Thank you so much!
I loved this so much!
Thanks
Shatner was in Outer Limits episode "Cold Hands, Warm Heart".
Ah, yes! The Alien Pineapple! 🍍
Lots of fun!
Thanks for this.
I recently watched the classic series all of it. I gotta say it’s really classy. It feels like Broadway play, especially the fighting.
Don't overlook the tension among and between the characters. For example, Mr. Spock and Dr. McKoy, obviously, subtly, dislike one another, yet, they both have a profound professional mutual respect for one another! Consider Chief Engineer Scott. Captain Kirk says to Scott: "Scotty. YOU, know the Enterprise better than the men who built her!" And consider Captain Kirk himself- Brave, bold, handsome, a brilliant executive officer, passionate and principled! A great show!
Great stuff & your facts were correct. Wish everyone cared so much about accuracy & presentation.
Very well done thanks!
Glad you liked it!
Thanks for another interesting video. Much I didn't know.
Glad you enjoyed it!
🌃 of the Lepus! 😂
Kingdom of the 🕷s!
I still own my copy of Mr Spocks music from outer space
I’ve always heard that William Shatner was broke, divorced and living out of his pick up truck just before he got the Star Trek series.
I read that, too. I also read that he was still living in his truck AFTER signing on to ST as Capt. Kirk!
Before shatner went to space there was an actual astronaut that was on an episode of The next generation
And that still didn't improve the ratings of TNG. (That show, TNG, totally sucked, and should never have been made.) The only reason it ever got aired was through, what the producers of the show did, was, "Direct Syndication".
didn't NASA name one of its ships "Enterprise"?
@@user-bw7se2zg7b yes, it was the very first space shuttle but used for testing never flew in space
NOT sure if it was ever mentioned, but the 1978 HALLOWEEN movie's Michael Myers mask is actually William Shatner's face. They cut out the eyes a bit and added different hair, some white spray paint and wallah! 🔪🎃
That is fascinating as Spock would say. Life is strange.
The “live long and prosper” hand sign, is a hand gesture for the Hebrew letter “shin”, meaning, Almighty God. Nimoy explained in an interview, that he wanted to use a hand gesture that had true meaning.
Thank you
It's not a secret that Shatner was difficult behind the scenes.
Leonard Nimoy wrote two books, "I am Spock" and "I am not Spock".
Good to know about the live long and prosper hand gesture. @ Tvcrazyman your not a doctor I am guessing but you make very good videos. Thanks for another great video and funny. Very true those who do not make mistakes are those who don't do any thing.
Thank you very much!
Here's some trivia for you my dad did special effects on star trek voyager and some of the movies he created and built the DeLorean on back to the future Richard Chronister funny enough Chronister means keeper of time everything is perfectly designed and intertwined😊
Awesome! Since you mention Back to the Future, I guess, I could quote Marty, "That's heavy!" Having a DeLorean would be so cool.😀
Worst song of all time?
Me:"Anything by lady gaga and taylor swift."
In several STOS episodes, both Uhura and Spock used what could be described as 60's blue-tooth receivers in their ears which were in actuality what common condiment containers?
Very good I Enjoyed the video.
Glad you enjoyed it
Did you know that in the episode Plato stepchildren when Shatner kissed Nichelle Nichols it was the first time an interracial kiss was ever on television? Rodenberry wanted to cut it out because he felt it was too controversial, but Shatner kept screwing up all the other takes so they ended up leaving it in.
The shatner twilight zone episode nightmare at 20000 ft had only 1 gremlin not "gremlins" think you're confusing with the 1983 movie title
Could be the Mandela Effect. I just remembered more.
seen one gremlin, seen em all
8:50 sound effects from the original Star Trek TV series can be heard in Star Wars episode 4. When they are in the interior of Kenobi's home🖖🏻
Someone actually watched, "The Phantom Mencace", through?
@samr.england613 you are joking...right?
Thank you for the video. Although I knew about a lot of the information, I didn't know that James Dohan was shot by friendly fire that many times. I knew about his finger, but I heard he hid it on Star Trek because he thought in that century doctors would be able to replace it or regenerate it. Whether it is true or not I don't know. LLAP
That could be true too about his finger. Appreciate it.
Spoken by someone who seems to be encountering some of these words for the first time ever.
A great you tube - if you suffer with insomnia- I fell asleep immediately
I wonder if the interplay between Kirk, Spock and McCoy worked in the show's favor?
Very few members of the cast of the original series like Shatner.
Spectre is pronounced "Spector" ... .
_not_ "spectre" despite its spelling.
Actually, it's pronounced
spek-ter.

But _not_ "spectre" which - but for the typo - was the point bring made. 🖖

What's the umbrella clip from?
That was a commercial I found. I believe it was from England.
❤👍
What is that from where Kirk jad the umbrella?
Shatner stared in touring theatre performances after ST ended, and eventually did get had lots of TV `guest’ appearances, & TV commercials, but this didn’t help his financial circumstances as the judge based his alimony & child support payments on what he was earning as the star of a TV show (rather like what happened to Brendan Fraser when he divorced). His income dropped precipitously when Star Trek ended. On the other hand, Leonard Nimoy’s wife got screwed over by the courts because the `judge’ was a fanboy of Mr Spock.
Jeffrey St.Louis: Me personally, Shatners my man,but Doohan, Nichols, George Takie, they disliked Shatners 👎 very much, but they were professional on screen
Clint howard, longest ever contiuing actor on the ST series.
James Doohan’s ashes are in space aren’t they? That makes him the first one of the cast to go into space then?
Technically, but not the first one to go into space while still alive, but probably something I should have mentioned. There's so much information that one video could never hold it all on Star Trek though.
Correction - The Vulcan sign came from Hebrew for peace, not Jew. Star Trek 25th Anniversary TV special hosted by Leonard Nimoy. Check it out.
Never understood why the Doctor spent most of his time on the bridge, nobody sick?
I always thought Moe was an alian but a Volcan?
It could explain how Moe could get hit so much and still keep going.😀
To expand on the Ron Howard connection, in "The Corbomite Maneuver," Balok in his true form was played by Ron's brother Clint Howard.
Can people stop saying that Branson’s and Amazon man’s low earth orbit flights do not go to space. They go into to low earth orbit, quite a distant to actually flying in space.
This is not a video for those that are up on Trek Trivia.
We all know this.
Did the guy really say that James Doohan was shot by one of his own???
The person doing the voiceover, sounds like the chap who does those annoying puzzles\shorts...you know the ones: e.g.: "If A woman has two sons and one daughter, which son gets married first." Just to give you an example. 😂😂😂
You mean the redneck joke guy. It's probably a location thing. I can do a pretty decent Elvis imitation as well. 😀
