- Debabrata Biswas requires no introduction in the word of Rabindra Sangeet. Debabrata Biswas was born in the undivided Bengal in the year 1911 in Barishal district. This was precisely the year when King George V was visiting India. Thus Debabrata Biswas was fondly nicknamed as George. Many of his acquaintances and kins fondly remember him as George da. This legendary Rabindra Sangeet singer was one of the first visionaries who realized that Tagore Songs should be taken out of this custodian orthodox box. He was one of the first Rabindra Sangeet artists who broke these shackles of ideological conformity. Though, His early gramophone recordings of Tagore songs brought out in the early 1940s demonstrate soulful full-throated expression of melody with a strict adherence to the rules and norms of tradition, written and unwritten, which he felt obliged to break in the early 1960s. At this period he experimented with his vocal modulations and varied instrumental usage which was never seen or heard before by his contemporaries singing Bengali Songs as well as he himself. These brought in a new freshness to the world of Rabindra Sangeet.
This compilation of Tagore Songs, “Best Of Deabrata Biswas Vol-4” contains some of the most popular Debabrata Biswas' renditions such as Megh Bolechhe Jabo Jabo, Sei Bhalo Sei Bhalo, Klaanti Aamaar Kshamaa Koro.
Debabrata Biswas was a part of the IPTA movement (cultural movement led by the communist party of India) and was also very much well known as a Ganasangeet singer. Because of his left inclination primarily Debabrata Biswas was hugely inspired by the western melodies, specially the harmonic structures. He introduced Spanish guitar, piano, saxophone, cello along side traditional instruments like sitar, harmonium, esraj etc. This fresh approach became hugely popular with the masses. This was not acceptable by the authorities and thus the conflict began which ended up Debabrata Biswas' quitting music because of health hazards. But this pioneer once again paved the way for a new revolution. For any Rabindra Sangeet listener this album is a steal.
