Look at the history of Japanese players and how they have been in the mlb. Tanaka and Hideki turned the Yankees into a fan favorite in Japan. They were stars. There’s gonna be a lot of Dodger fans in Japan 🎉
KYOJIN IS THE #1 TEAM IN JAPAN
There's already a bunch of fans there.
@@arkangelarkangel1302yeah, kids don't remember Nomo anymore.
@@T.C.Clarienlol not anymore softbanks now is the best team and with money in japan league kyojin or giants is not event in championship like for 5 years now
@@SuperCatacataThe Dodgers have had many Japanese pitchers after Nomo. Ishii, Saito, Kuroda, Maeda, etc. I've been in Japan for years and there are a lot of Dodger fans here.
1:43 So often, the narrative explaining why Shohei was "able to" to defer that much of his salary was because of his unparalleled marketability off the field. Because he's pulling in $40-50M in endorsements, he's able to comfortably defer 96% of his salary. But from what I'm learning about him, I don't think that's the main reason and I think it actually does a disservice to his character.
Even if his off-the-field income was down where Aaron Judge's is (i.e., $5M), I still think he would've been content doing the same thing. From what we've learned about his lifestyle in the NPB, he was content leading a rather frugal lifestyle. Again, with a $2M a year salary, an Aaron Judge-type $5M a year endorsement income, and the $40M+ amount he's already banked from his Angels' stint, I think he'd have been completely comfortable living off the $7M a year salary for the next 10 years.
It does seems money means less to him than other players compared to winning, but we don't know how much less. Maybe he only takes $20 million a year if his endorsements are $5 million. I don't think there's any way to know with any reasonable certainty because we're not in his head. I'm sure there's a line he'll draw but we don't know where that line is. But I do give him credit for taking probably less than his market value
100% correct, and I attribute this to the insularity of American baseball journos, and their disinterest in listening to the dozens of Japan-based, fully bilingual media members who cover these guys daily side-by-side with the Passan's of the world. There is definitely a market available for a bilingual journalist who covers both the NPB and MLB to make an impact on baseball journalism.
I doubt he hates money but he just has very little need for it while he’s still playing.
lol. Because he wants to win. He wanted the dodgers to use that money while he was here and I guess to help avoid most of the LA luxury tax. Money was Not the issue here. Dodgers are a class organization
I really don’t get the disservice to his character comment. It just shows that he wants to win more than all other mlb players. No other player in history has even remotely tried to help their team financially like this lol
Also the dude is going to be worth more than 2.5 billion when he’s done playing baseball barring career ending injury. I don’t think you understand just How Big he is internationally and will become.
For reference, as a Japanese star athlete.
When Matsuyama won the Masters, he was guaranteed in advertisements and marketing to become a billionaire. He’s nothing compared to Shohei lol.
Shohei made 50mil last year outside baseball as an invisible Angel. I say invisible because it’s the Angels lol. Now that he’s part of a worldwide brand, top 3 in the nation, he and the dodgers are going to make wayyyyyyyyy more back. And think exponentially.
So no. Yankees had no shot. And while 5 million is a lot for Judge, it’s less than One of the deals Shohei signed his Rookie year

Freeman behind Ohtani for protection and it puts a ton of speed at the top of the order.
This is the way.
The first thing that came to my mind when we got Otani San was how fast he runs the bases 👍🏽
So its gonna be Betts/Ohtani/Freeman/Smith right?
Back in 2018, I heard Jeff Passan and others say Ohtani hits like a high school player and needs seasoning in the minors.
Wow!
@@wilburwood8261 that's because Jeff was being used by his MLB sources to downplay Ohtani's potential for their own possible benefit. Passan, I guarantee, hadn't spent more than the length of a CZcams highlight video studying Ohtani.
I believe that he was never planning to go to the Yankees anyway. 😢
Yamamoto watches Ohtani's games, so he sees all the booing and lack of respect rants against Ohtani by the Yankees fans. Especially, the MVP battle between Ohtani and Judge last year was bad. That might have made his impression of the Yankees worse...
I liked the Yankees when Tanaka and Matsui were there, but I don't like them now.
If the self-centered mindset of today's Yankees fans doesn't change, Roki Sasaki will never go to the Yankees, no matter how much they pay him.

Japan has another phenom pitcher named Roki Sasaki - hopefully the Dodgers can recruit him too.
He doesnt want to wait. He wants to be posted now. Dodger could get him next year.
@@stevedoe8622 His team already said that's not gonna happen
@@stevedoe8622 That will definitely not gonna happen. Because Sasaki is under 25, so he can get only something like a 3-5 Mil contract. That means his team can get only like 1 Mil something for him.
Yamamoto is 25, so his Japanese team got like 50 Mil. That is an unacceptable difference.
He’s the best pitcher of the 3…. By a country mile.
Dodgers: 1 World Series in 35 years, they SUCK
We’re all itching for the next baseball season already.
It was a good move for Yamamoto to join the Dodgers, he is reunited with a teammate in Ohtani. If I was a GM I wouldn’t commit to the 12yrs but ya never know maybe he becomes an ace in MLB. Yankees need an innings eater now and hope to be in a good position for a frontline Pitcher at the trade deadline.
Ohtani was not his only teammate playing in the MLB. He just cared about money. Obviously other teams wanted to pay him the same.
As much as I hate that he chose the Dodgers over the Yankees, I can’t fault the guy. If I was in his shoes, I probably would have done the same.

Knock on wood. If we are healthy the last 2 seasons we make deep playoff runs if not to the WS. It’s hard to blame him for things out of his control like bauer’s framing, urias beating his wife etc
Depends with how much money they could make out of Othani.. Even if they lose another world series but earns twice they made last year then I'm pretty sure he still reached his quota 😂.. Winning is going to be just the bonus while earning money is the main goal for buying out Ohtani who's going to have his second TJ..
From what I read on X..
one of the questions regarding Yankees for both Ohtani and Yamamoto was "do they allowed to participate of the next WBC" which Yankees infamously "refrain" their players to attend the WBC previously..
think again, Ohtani AND Yamamoto would NOT not participating in WBC above everything else's..
Shohei is smart for defering his money. Dodgers were able to sign another super star because he defered. His legacy is more important in the long run than a large paycheck right now. Plus since he signed in a big market team he can make tons of money in endorsement.
I don’t know if it was mentioned earlier but the luxury tax for Othani this year is 46 million which is more than any other player in the sport. Can we stop this false narrative that the money deferred doesn’t affect the luxury tax. It’s at a discount but certainly not only 2 million a year. Once again, 46 million a year, The Highest Luxury Tax bill in Baseball.
Not high enough. His salary should be spread over the life of the contract. Shame on the owners for allowing it.

Well I think Rangers is winner now after Ohtani and Yamamoto sign with Dodgers haha Let's Go Orioles !! Let's beat the Dodgers in World Series !!
As a Yankee fan I'm glad he went to the NL. Despite the fact the Angels never won anything with him.
As someone who has spent half his life living in Japan, the cultural ignorance of the American sports media (and I love this show) is downright cringe. And although Ohtani is also an enigma here, too, it's much less so than in the States. Everyone knew he wanted to win first; from his time with the Angels, he learned/affirmed that this meant fielding an entire team. It was also his idea to defer his salary; this isn't Larry David signing checks left and right. It not only required the player's consent, but it was the player's idea. Lastly, very few YOUNG, ELITE Japanese players want to play east of Chicago...for reasons that Americans might want to contemplate.
The reason is the west coast is closer to Japan.
The Dodgers FINALLY catch a break.
Is it “catching a break” when you spend over a billion dollars on 2 players?
Next you know, Roki Sasaki is coming to town ! that dude is a pitching monster
Growing up in the 90s in LA I know how your son felt Oh No!! Yankees signed best player available.
Example?
@liduck52 Mike mussina. Roger clemens. Traded for Paul oniell, wade boggs. Signed El Duque, chuck knobalch. They were already stacked with jeter, B Williams, pasada, wells and cone, Pettit. In Early 2000s Matsui, cc Sabathia. Alex Rodriguez, Garry sheified Jason Giambi, dodgers signed who in 90 s or 2000???
As a Mets fan this one hurt, since it was our only potential bright spot in the off season. The Mets front office already indicated that besides trying for Yamamoto they planned on doing next to nothing and tanking this coming season, so if I was Yamamoto I probably wouldn't want to go there either.
Imagine Senga and Yamamoto as 1-2 punch in your rotation? Insane.
How about pairing up Imanaga with Senga. That might be about as big.
@thefishhobbyist5478 Not according to Scherzer. When they offered to trade him last season he said no cuz he wanted to reload the team and try again next year, management told him they are not reloading and are looking to 2025, he said that's bs and he won't believe it until he hears it from Cohen, then after he talked to Cohen he changed his tune and said OK trade me. Since then, there have been additional rumors that have been similar, if not exactly the same, about the Mets plans or lack thereof for 2024. There is even chatter of them not re-signing Alonso since he doesn't fit in their current timeline. The only thing different that has been put out is Cohen recently said that life moves on after Yamamoto and the team will keep trying to get better.
Money being equal, neither NY team has their act together. Do you think Yamamoto wants to hear “Fire Cashman” chants throughout home games? Join a Mets team that publicly announced they weren’t in it next year? And the time zone difference is big money for him as well as quality of life.
Let's go Dodgers!! From the land of the rising sun, to the land of the setting sun, we're gonna be nigh unstoppable! I'm so stoked for next season!

People act like SF isn’t a stones throw away from Palo Alto, Sausalito, and the really nice parts of SF don’t exist. Yeah there’s a problem throughout California with homelessness but these guys have the money to live a Beverly Hills lifestyle up there. All the FAs the Giants have pursued would be among the richest in the city. It’s not like Yoshi was going to get an apartment in the heart of the Tenderloin lmao
Nobody feels bad for the Giants. Yall got to watch your team win 3 World Series since 2010.
What happens when the Dodgers sign Sasaki in a couple years?
dodgers showtime era starts now
Yamamoto is unproven, Ohtani and Glasnow are injury plagued. Showtime won't last for very long.
If a bunch of Euro baseball stars existed, they'd likely sign for NYY or another East Coast team, owing to proximity and familiarity. LA is like "Tokyo East". NYC is literally half-way around the world from Japan.
Nobody should have expected Yamamoto to turn down the Dodgers deal when it's great, closer to Japan and Ohtani is his teammate. Meanwhile, the Yankess have been outplayed the past 2 years by 2 teams in their division who are bottom 5 in payroll
If the Dodgers don't win at least 3 rings with this team, we can mock them.
Idgaf what you say I’m throwing a damn baseball at my son 🤣
Like Kelce's ol' lady says..."SHAKE IT OFF, SHAKE IT OFF!"😂

This is the best team ever on paper in 2025
New York wishes the Dodgers we're still in Brooklyn. 😅😅😅
Mets needed to bid an offer that LA and Yankees couldn't match. Same bid then the obvious choice is LA. Cohen made a bad decision. Cohen gave 43M each to 2 aging 40 year old pitchers (Max and Verlander) last year and think 25 year old 3 time CY and MVP in Pacific league Yamamoto is worth less than that?
400M would have sealed the deal and hard for LA to match. Next year Roki Sasaki will join LA. Dynasty!

rarely ever have these long term contracts been successful but that doesn’t stop the madness
Stop talking about money. Dodgers don’t even have the highest payroll. Dodgers are rich because they also know how to develop talent and make the right decisions. It’s not the Yankees where they bought most their players. Dodgers roster is still made up of home grown talent or players they traded home grown talent for.
I love it!! Let's go Dodgers!!!
My goodness the Yankees have been outbidding EVERYONE SINCE THE 1930’s. The Dodgers finally have owners that can purchase the blue chip free agents. We always watched them go to the Yanks, Red Sox, Mets, Padres, etc.
The Dodgers did what the Angels did NOT do which is spend to put talent around their stars. Otani got out in a smart way, he won't waste his career in an Angels uniform like Trout.
Everyone is pounding on the Dodgers as if they are outspending everyone else. That’s just not true.
Look at much money the Yankees and the Mets are spending every year. The Dodgers don’t spend more than the other big teams, they just actually succeed with their spending unlike the New York teams.
Neither the Mets nor the Yankees are paying one player $700,000,000.
@@jwvvvv Neither are the Dodgers. The $700 million is a massively inflated figure that makes Ohtani’s agents look good. In financial value adjusted for inflation, this contract is close to a 10-year, $450-500 million contract, which is exactly what Ohtani would have gotten if he chose to sign with the Mets or the Yankees.
You are also cherrypicking one player’s contract instead of considering the entire team’s payroll as a whole, which is plainly dishonest. Do we just forget that Cohen signed Scherzer and Verlander in back-to-back years? Do Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, and Gerritt Cole not exist to you?

Ohtani is different when it comes to superstar athletes. He wants to win, and he knows he can afford to defer 96% of his salary now, which will allow the team to free up funds to bring in others, (Glasgow, Yamamoto, ect.). Compare that to Aaron Rodgers and the Packers taking that record contract and then complaining how he didn't have talent around him, even though it's because Green Bay couldn't afford to keep around high end talent with his contract. If LA's willing to get into a budget nightmare in the future, let them, because he'll be retired by then and it's not going to be his problem.
Now everyone's complaining about Yamamoto going there, that had to he an easy pitch. "We got Shohei, want to run it back with what you two did in the World Baseball Classic?"

There are two routes for a 5 foot 10 inch pitcher: Lincecum or Whitey Ford. A 12 year deal is definitely a ceiling approach. Yanks should be glad the Dodgers have cut off their own legs in 5 years.
Yanks blew it by not making a play for Ohtani first....!
Sounds and reminds me a lot of when the NY Yankees got A ROD.......we had Jeter, Matsui, A Rod, Sheffield, Cano, Giambi, Posada, Rivera, Texiera....all those years....we won only 1 World Series. The Dodgers are now the enemy of all other teams in MLB.
Los Angeles life is better than NYC life.

"Their farm system hasnt been rated at all"
They literally have one of the best farm systems 😂😂😂😂
Our Double-A call up last year was throwing a no-hitter in his debut
Keep staying mad Yankee shill
He said “raided” lol. As in it hasn’t been pilfered yet.
You can have the best team on paper, but you still have to go out and play. Look at the Padres last season. Yes, I am a Dodger fan.
Yay. I’m not the only one. Huge fan of Celtics, Patriots & Yankees.
