I don't like when people say they like the water boys version better than Ellie Gouldings version, the water boys didn't do a version of this song, they did the original,

24 years since the brilliant original and it takes a "superstar" to kill it till it's brought to the public. Waterboys aren't a whole of the moon one hit wonder. One of the best live bands ever.
I had the pleasure of seeing them at the famous Glasgow barrowlands in 2001 an it was sublime .....Mike Scott is a genius song writer.....unbelievably underrated.....but hey this music should only be appreciated by people who really understand the the power and beauty of real music an musicians....not everyone truly feels this...
My other half used to like Ellie's version. She went to Australia for a month and I sent her this, telling her she needed to hear the proper version. Now she can't hear Mike's original without weeping. Such an amazing song.

I had the misfortune to hear the Goulding version again today and had to listen to the supremely better original to cleanse my ears. She takes all the passion and all the yearning out of it.
True mate. Though I prefer the quicker tempo version with the host of instruments, but it's still a world and a fathom better than hers. I think she was given a sheet of paper with the lyrics on and told to read them, they recorded it and just stuck two notes of a piano on top

Only a man could write lyrics like this. I knew Ellie Goulding didn't write this. I knew I heard it before. It takes a man totally in love to write the most heart felt songs. I was asked when I was writing music about 4 months before I broke up with my daughter's mom to write a song for her and for diamonds I couldn't write anything sincere. I knew then she was trouble but I didn't know how much. I trusted this girl with my life. I have written hundreds of songs and poems and not one of them are based on her. I knew something was up. Go with your gut. I learned too late and had a child from an absolute troublesome girl. When she becomes a woman who is mature I'll address her as a woman then. I honestly wish I had my daughter from a good person. I adore you little princess. I hope to see you get bigger and actually understand how much pain your mom put me through and still is sick or not. lets not bicker... The biggest difference is in production and considering they were recorded years apart its hardly surprising. Having said that, Waterboys version ticks more boxes for me. But if someone like Smellie Moulding records it, Mike Scott is laughing all the way to the royalties bank, so I'm sure he ain't complining!!
