Hey guys! Playing Opeth and going deeper into their music and guitar riffs I've noticed a lot of similarities between Opeth and Gojira. Maybe this is just me but I'm curious what do you reckon about it. By the way, the video was originally about 13 minutes long and so that this masterpiece would not be blocked I had to remove a bunch of awesome guitar riffs. Sorry but it wasn't up to me. He has said multiple times that he writes by ear, meaning he just goes by what sounds good to him. I think that's a huge part of their sound, because most of it didn't follow any rules and often was atonal, but that just made it so much better
I’m a huge Opeth fan, have been for years. It’s funny though, I’ll go months without listening to them, they even slip my mind completely. Until a video like this pops up, and I’m reminded again of just how genuinely amazing this band is. Now I have to go through the discography again, and I can’t wait.
@@dropd1039 Doesn't mean it's bad music, it's just not riff-focused. Give In Cauda Venenum a try, genuinely some of the most beautifully theatric songs to come from any band in a while and Mikael's clean vocals absolutely shine (especially in the Swedish version)
Pre-soft Opeth era is my favorite band of all time, been listening to them since Deliverance release and I always thought they were masters in their style. Great video man, wish you all the best

Dude. This is great list and I was delighted to see Serenity Painted Death included - that intro riff is one of my favorite heavy riffs of all time and I feel like it is really underrated.

As if I needed a reminder about how absolutely incredible Mikael and the boys are! One of my all time favorite bands ever of any genre. There is no one quite like them.
Awesome video! Also I'm curious as to what you mean by the similarities you notice between Opeth's and Gojira's riffs. They're two of my favorite bands, but I personally find them very different. For example Gojira often use inverted power chords, gallops, tremolo picking, and sometimes tapping in their riffs, all stuff that Opeth rarely use. Also I'd say that Gojira is a lot more groove-oriented, while Opeth is more melodic, and their riffs are more "note-y" (I hope this makes sense). I'm interested in hearing your point of view.

Opeth has written some of the best metal songs ever. Heir Apparent, Blackwater Park, Master's Apprencite, Ghost of Perdition to name a few, they are some of my go to for metal awesomeness
Maaaaan I was playing along with every riff, loving the choices, then you did me dirty throwing in the down tuned Baying of the Hounds lol. Dang it. Great choices, though it shows the greatness of Opeth that you've chosen like 2-5 riffs from 10 songs rather than just 10 straight riffs haha

I don't think there is a band that can sound as evil as Opeth when it comes to guitar riffs. The beginning of The Baying Of The Hounds and Master's Apprentices sound so evil it's hard do describe them.
