This wonderfully extensive documentary, produced in 2006 by Gordon Bennett & Graham Rowland and written by Stephen Phillips, covers 50 years of sports coverage by Melbourne's Seven Network. This series was originally broadcast on TV back in 2006 and was one of a number of different categories in the series (I believe drama and news were a couple of others). I went out and bought the DVD not long after.
More than half of the near-180 minutes of footage is dedicated to our great game, Australian football. Excerpts from Seven's Big League, World of Sport, Football Inquest, League Teams, Talking Footy and many other classic panel shows are dispersed throughout footage of classic matches and finals.
The 1956 Olympics is also covered, so too: golf, tennis, boxing, horse racing, and from memory even a little bit of cricket.
Enjoy this superb documentary, hosted by John Wood, available for the first time on CZcams.
I'll own up - I'm from Tennessee, and I've watched some Grand Finals televised live on HSV-7, by way of ESPN - and when Olivia Newton-John performed "Waltzing Matilda" before the 1986 edition, it hit me hard - and I broke down and sobbed.
That, my friends, was - and still is - part of what makes all of sport in Australia on Seven so very special.
Thank you all so very much.
I grew up in the western suburbs of Melbourne but have lived in the Midwest USA for the past 20 years. What a trip down memory lane this has been for me. The sites and sounds of my beloved home town. Makes me quite home sick. All I need now is for Doug Elliot to come on screen doing a Solway add and I'm liable to lose my shit!!! In the immortal words of Uncle Doug, "Thanks for the memories".
Whoa they produced this back in 2006?! I would've thought 1986....Interesting and insightful stuff.
