Captain's log. We crash landed on this strange planet on our way to deliver the cargo. I'm not sure where we are, but there has to be a human base somewhere. All I have to do is survive long enough to find it. Wait, what's that slurping noise?
Production details
This is my submission to the 21st M8 Community Jam! The theme was "Fallen Planet Exploration" and the optional theme was to use at least one sample of wildlife sounds.
For the last Jam, MRDRCAT created an awesome tune called [Ossuary](m8communityjam.bandcamp.com/t...) that used this super fun pan flute instrument. After listening to it several times, I knew I wanted to use a similar sound in my new song. I then took a little bit of inspiration from ["Voices of the Temple"]( • Donkey Kong Country OS... ) (from the Donkey Kong Country 1 Soundtrack) and used a similar evocative little flute trill thing it has in the beginning to set a mysterious tone of stumbling upon a lost temple in the middle of the jungle.
I then started sifting through the Public Domain samples provided by the USA's National Parks Services - I was trying to find something that I could use to make seem alien. I ended up using five of their sounds. Three of them were more environmental background sounds: a woodstove with a crackling fire, a thunderstorm, and, my favorite of the three, the slurps, gurgles and plops gasses venting into a pool of wet clay pot along the Artist Paint Pot trail in Yellowstone National Park. Then I used the sounds of an Elk and a Wild Turkey and played them in reverse with some reverb and other effects to make them sound super weird an alien.
And that's how I arrived at the final song!
I feel like there are places that could DEFINITELY have used some more development. I should have built in a little more looping portions to allow the melody to breathe a bit more. As it stands, the songs ends way too soon (to my ears). But the time to submit has come, so here we are!

PS: Huge shoutout to @ineffable_twaddle for [this Discord post they made]( / discord ) which contains a bunch of super useful links about Public Domain Samples (including the National Park Services ones I used).
PPS: The video is super glitchy because I recently updated to the new 4.0.0 Beta firmware and I haven't yet been able to get the video capture setup working again. Hopefully I'll have figured it out by next time!
