My friends dad has one of these, it’s from the 1990s. It’s called phantom chess. Old tech sold as new. The playing strength goes from beginner(300) to expert (2100)

Yep. I have an Excalibur 2100 set from the 90s (maybe 80s) as well. Today's chess technology is decades behind from where it should be.

Maybe the gap between the pieces is just enough for the knight to slide through? The square looks large tho.

He can also move other pieces that are blocking it, to allow for the knight to move, and then get the other pieces back into the previous position.

I had the OG version of this…like 20 years ago. It was just a board with buttons under every spot, and you had to move the pieces on your own. There was a little screen on it telling you where to put the computers pieces after you moved.
