My first big project of Quarantine 2020 was to update our stone fireplace. I decided to whitewash the faux stone. Here are the tools and info needed for the job: danamccurdyonline.com/how-to-...
Thank you for this video. I'm wanting to whitewash our stone fireplace, especially after I finish painting in the livingroom. I keep seeing videos that are super painted white. I really just want to lighten it up, so it isn't so dated. This was perfect! Very informative! Thanks so much!
Just bought a home with a 40 year old dark stone fireplace. It needs to be brightened so bad. Going to give it a shot your way. Never don this before. Keeping my fingers crossed. Will post before and after. Thanks Dana for the video, gives me a little confidence in this project!
Hey Dana, how did you go about painting the hearth? My fireplace is very similar to yours with the flat stone hearth. I was curious if you used the same technique as the rest of the fireplace. I'm trying to avoid that area looking streaky or like actual brush strokes.
This was a very helpful video. Thank you! I like your more conservative approach to coverage. About to tackle one similar with the resin stones. Not sure what others are talking about the audio, I could hear it just fine.
Thank you so much for this tutorial! I too have been thinking about this for quite some time! I do have one question ... Did you prep the stone in any way or scub/wash it down with anything to prep it?
Wait. 70/30 water to paint? Love how yours turned out. I have a rock wall that sucks the energy out and this looks perfect for updating. Thx for sharing!
U are the best for the quick reply! Yes. Less is more. I wonder If Home Depot is open mow for me to go get the paint! Lol. Can’t wait to try! Seriously, thanks for the clarification. I like how some of the color shows thru.
Marina Ignatovets I did one layer, and then I went back to stones that didn’t take the color very well. I also did another coat on the stones that were very orange or red because I didn’t want those warm colors coming through.
Hello! Just seen your video. Your walls and trim and fireplace rocks are exactly the same as mine!! Kinda weird ! Anyway…. I’ve thought about white washing my rock fireplace but I’m scared too. What if I don’t like it??! Are you glad you did it? Do you miss the different color stones? I thought I heard you say they were resin? Mine are real stone. Just wondering if you regret it?
I am going to have my work cut out as i will be whitewashing a whole granite room a number of times to get more light into the room. The house go's back to the early 1800's So lacks large windows down stairs. So i need to get lots of white on the bare granite walls to give me as much light as possible. I am luck with the upstairs as it has four windows so lots of light up there. Just need to clean the granite and point up where needed.
You’re right, my website is currently down while working on it. But, if you actually watch the video you see/hear everything I used smh. Water, latex paint, paint brush, rag. Hope that helps
Looks wonderful! Now I’m inspired to tackle mine. Thank you!
Thank you for the inspiration. Painted the fireplace and it came out great
This is BEAUTIFUL!!! Thank you so much for the great tutorial.
Thank you so much, I appreciate that!

Love, Hugs, and Belly Rubs! I’m so glad it was helpful! You can definitely play with the opacity. I’m sure it’s gonna look awesome!
Thanks for the video! It is inspiring me to get going on my fireplace! Good job to you and your Dad! Totally transformed fireplace!
Thank you
I think it looks very cool with all the light shades coming through. Very nice!
Thank you so much! My favorite project so far

Yep, I just used the same technique. The mixture is so watery that it shouldn’t be streaky

Yes, you can always add more if needed so I like to start light. Thank you, I appreciate that I’m not sure what they are talking about either.

Thank you so much for this tutorial! I too have been thinking about this for quite some time! I do have one question ... Did you prep the stone in any way or scub/wash it down with anything to prep it?
Just vacuumed and dusted all the stones really well!
Thanks for this tutorial I just had my fire place painted which is wood, but the stones at the bottom needs whitewashing .
I’m glad it helped! I’m sure it turned out beautiful
@@danamccurdy351 It did an thanks for your kind words
How many coats did it take
What paint did you use?
Wait. 70/30 water to paint? Love how yours turned out. I have a rock wall that sucks the energy out and this looks perfect for updating. Thx for sharing!
Yes, I ended up with about 70% water 30% paint for the mixture. Just depends on the opacity you want to achieve. You can always add more if you want!

Hi! Did you do mostly just one layer on the whole fire place?
Marina Ignatovets I did one layer, and then I went back to stones that didn’t take the color very well. I also did another coat on the stones that were very orange or red because I didn’t want those warm colors coming through.
How long did this take you to paint? Our fireplace is HUGE and goes all the way around...I'm thinking we'll need to hire on help 😬
Only took a a day and a half. It goes pretty fast, I wouldn’t hire someone for this job personally.
I actually loved the look and decor before you painted the fireplace. I think once you paint the decor has to have color to enhance the white.
I love it!! I'm about to do this!! I have those same flat, square stones on my hearth. Did you use same technique there? Thanks for this tutorial!!
Yes! I used the same technique on all the stones! It’s been almost a year and has held up really well
@@danamccurdy351 thank you!!

Definitely don’t regret it. It’s been 3 years and we still love it!
Do you find that you have to touch it up with paint yearly?
No, it’s been almost 3 years and hasn’t needed any touch ups yet
About how long did it take you to finish the project?
It took a day and a half to two days with dry time between coats and touch ups

What kind of paint did you use?
Hi, I just used a flat white latex paint that I diluted with water about a 70/30 mixture
Is that stone, simulated or real stone ?? Very beautiful
How many coats did you do?
One on lighter stones, two on warmer colored stones
You’re fireplace looks a lot like mine. Did you end up using a whole gallon of paint on this project?
No, I only used maybe half a quart of paint. Once you water it down it goes really far!
I’m doing mine now and scared my husband won’t like it. Lol
So sorry the volume is too low and I can't hear you.
Sounds good on my devices. May be your device
Nope is low on mine too
super quiet can’t hear
Nice, though I could have done without that 120 decibel blast towards the end.
She's super cute! What did she say?
what did you use no more website smh
You’re right, my website is currently down while working on it. But, if you actually watch the video you see/hear everything I used smh. Water, latex paint, paint brush, rag. Hope that helps
Oh wow. I liked it better before.
Good grief!
Your audio is horrible
Not a problem for me or many others, probably your device
