All schools need to be designed like this. Humans were not meant to sit for 8 hours a day.

theevilqueen I'm not sure all of the same features would be practical but I definitely think places like Offices need more open areas and opportunities for less sitting or being sedentary for extended time periods.
theevilqueen Apple is building a new campus in Cupertino, USA with this idea in mind. Google had this approach years ago.
theevilqueen this is a subject that has come up often with a friend of mine the Architect Doug Cardinal. who designed the Museum of Civilization in Ottawa- Hull. Is it form over function and at what cost. Why can we not think outside of the box? and design our living space to be not only ergonomic and economical but very adventurous and to actually look out of the ordinary. Or they could be symbolic buildings or whatever. But I feel the future will lie in a designing a format that will continue to get cheaper and also meet some of the alternative goals. Over here it is always a matter of insurance. "Oh is little Johnny going to fall down? We better get a lawyer!" Know what I mean? I used to love the Environmental Studies building at Waterloo because the planners and the architectural students and faculty got the nicest spaces on the top floor which was a green house and a weather station and it was nice. You never had to turn the heat on as it was always warm in there and in the summer you could open all these windows and chutes to get a breeze blowing through there.

The kids are sooooo happy running around in this building ! they made my heart warm ! Their smile reminded me why I wanted to become an Architect !

If you are an architect I really hope you are better than this guy...who desinged one of the lamest and least functional buildings I've ever seen.
A lot of you are misunderstanding something at this school. You are not forced to go to this school. Schools in Japan are not like Americanized schools, there is no real "predetermined" school. You're free to choose whichever school you want to go to, regardless of distance, so no one is forcing parents to place their kids here, especially if they know their children wouldn't do well in an environment like this. This school is not perfect, but it's a start. It's not like regular kindergarten schools are any better, but having a variety of schools and structures allows a parent to have more choices to choosing the most ideal environment for their child.
Sound reasoning. Since they are so full of energy, you might as well let them express it in school so they don't hassle the parents when they get home lol

***** In EU kids age 3-4 have nap time. Kids age 5 prepare for elementary school during that time.

Awesome idea - both from an architectural and educational perspective. It's sad to think much of this good work will be undone shortly after the kids have started going through elementary school.

Abroadin Japan Who we are is most impacted in the first 5 years, this will leave a lasting impact on children's enthusiasm, playfulness, freedom to think outside boundaries and spirit. Even with the the impact of other schools, this place will leave a mark. Now we have to create a series of school through University, that leave people empowered, enabled, ennobled and deliriously excited to live great big amazing lives. We need to stop making people small, to fit the dictates of plutocrats.
I am an educator and I taught at university when was younger and have taught on and off adult education for years in various topics. This is the most revolutionary scene I have ever witnessed. We used to set up classrooms on the reserve where I am from and they were based a lot on what this man was presenting. To create independence., camaraderie and to ensure our community will have a future.

I've never considered the possibility that architecture can be used to educate the next generation to be more social and, I guess you could say, to enjoy life with playful exploration.

Revolutionises the thinking, that kindergarten is pre-primary school and that it should follow exactly what primary school will be for these kids, into what it should be; a place for kids
Love this innovative idea! I love how the school allows the children freedom to explore without being over-protective. The traditional school system forces children to sit in one spot for most of the day then label them as having ADHD when they want to move around. Also, a lot of schools have unfortunately cut out physical education. Physical activity/exercise is not only beneficial for your health but also wonderful for brain development, concentration, emotion regulation, sleep, etc.
This is not an idea..this is pedagogic principle since more than 150 years..and is done in most (good) Kingergartens. But that one is ideal for the opposite because you can basically monitor the kids as soon as they are on the outside and they only have open areas with no privacy...so that is basically how NOT to avoid being overprotective.
Wonderfully and wholly human...physically, socially, and spiritually!

We were raised this way! We were left to our devices, left to get wet in the rain, got mud on our hands and our clothes. We learnt much on our own..
This is lovely! What a fun Kindergarten! Now kids would love to learn in this kind of environment. And because they love it so much, they will actually learn. Rather than dreading their time in school.
I remember my kindergarten is placed aside a huge soccer field and my kindergarten itself have a very large area. This man really describe how I feel when I'm in school. When I was a kid, it always tingle me why we have to sit inside a packed classroom, filled with other kids and teachers. I always looking outside and if I have the chance to, I'll always running around the classroom. At the same time, I will try to go away from them and just watch from afar.
The concept of the openness is really intriguing. Because you know, kids are always running around, yes we do cry when we tumble, but in a few seconds, we'll run again!

Absolutely! We coddle our kids in America to the point that they get their little feelings hurt and they don’t know how to deal with it. Unfortunately the comments were turned off for the forest kindergarten video. Excellent idea! What I found interesting was that the teacher stated that in 17 years of doing forest kindergarten teaching he only had to take a kid to the hospital once and it was caused by a parent. We want our kids to be outside playing instead of inside with video games but they get hurt and the first thing we do is drag them back inside.

Amazing schooling concept and great idea... should be applied worldwide
Love this idea, great for those that love outdoors. My daughter's gr. 1 class does morning runs after they sit down in the morning, and it is seperated from P.E. All the schools in Vancouver, B.C now keep the kids out rain or Shine, and dress for the weather with clean clothes to change into on really wet days.
This is excellent architecture!
Especially in a large city, for small kids the outside world is like a set of long corridors, you can't explore on your own, you can't walk on grass, can't walk on the street, can't go into most buildings.
So if they live in a small flat they often might spend most of their childhood going from a tiny flat into a tiny room at school via a set of long conceptual corridors when outside. If driven by car then it's yet another tiny space that makes distance abstract.
This particular design creates an effective massive space due to the loop and it's all in the sun while also having the same function as an indoor space.
This is also a great example that controlling kids and generally controlling learning is a lot less effective than simply focusing on setting up the best possible enviroment.
Rather than telling kids what to do, set up the enviroment so that the correct choice is the obvious one and let kids figure it out for themselves, thats the whole point of being a child, to make mistakes yourself - the point where you learn through other peoples mistakes on an institutionalised basis should be reserved I would say as late as last years of highschool and then university - otherwise there is a high risk of raising educated idiots who can quote shakespeare but cannot figure out how say King Lear applies to their own family life.

Yes, we always expect a child to grow up to be strong, independent, happy, highly productive and sociable adult. They cannot be like that if we keep children wrapped in a bubble, protecting from every minor falls and forbidding them to even move a limb or express their loud voice and happy giggles.
Absolutely brilliant idea! It is known that we learn better if we have enough exercise or at least some movement while learning. I wish more countries would follow. A very funny presenter as well.

Wow! So inspiring! That s the place where kids education starts, once they choose they're coping mechanism, it develops it does not change, so making sure they have chosen out of freedom not out of restriction it is absolutely world changing. I would have preferred growing up in a kindergarten like this, even do it was the school i did not like 😄, but this is a starting point to then change the schools as well. Thank you so much

I design a kindergarten in this studio semester and this speech gives me a motivation of that i can change something about childeren lives and this make me helps them about their life struggles.This is the correct way to be architect.For a basic human size or a monkey size :)

we should adapt this to our parks, where everything is round and open, kids can play and will come back where ever they run and parents can observe their kids from the centre and let them roam freely kids can play on such platforms where dods are welcome to stay on the ground level to play with kids~

Really the current life need all these
While I appreciate the idea and can agree it would be better for a decent number of kids, I dont think it would be better for "all" kids. Speaking from personal experience I know I would have had an absolutely terrible time at this sort of school. I needed quiet environments, the ability to get a bit of distance from the sea of people when I need it and such. I went through a number of schools growing up, including a number of the more "unusual" schools. One was a school with no set class times, no defined class rooms and such. I did horribly there, it was an awful experience. On the other hand I spent some time at a school that had the resources to be more personalized. Class sizes were smaller and not age based but based on the level on the student. With the lower number of students to each class it meant classes were much quieter and could be much more personalized. I did fantastically there even skipping a number of years and I feel many more children would as well with that same personalized education.
In short, I can appreciate why this would be great for a number of kids, but I can see how it isnt applicable to everyone just based on how it wouldnt have work for me personally
That is true, but the fact is we still need a variety of schools in general. Not all schools need to be like this, but a great number more do.

Yeah, I think the problem comes down to the fact that "kids" arnt a standardized product, they are each unique, they each learn entirely differently. Any system that claims to be the perfect system for "kids" in a general sense is always going to let a certain number slip through the cracks, because there is no one size fits all for humans
Its an interesting thing to consider, and really come to think of it I dont think I have heard of any notable discussion about it, the idea that we could have different kinds of schools specialized towards different kinds of children. I have seen discussions about alternative kinds of schools that have, say, a bigger focus on elective classes and elective timetables to be more flexible to the student and such, but never the idea that we should have entirely different specialized schools, not outside of things like schools for the deaf or blind and such. Its an interesting thought, I think I need to give it a bit more thought. I have literally never even considered it before so I dont know what I think about the idea haha

I study psychology, and I myself is an introvert, and as a child, I was really always alone. However, their architecture is actually inclusive. It's because its preschool which means it is the time for physical and motor development and their concept really fits the needs of a child during this stage. And, I don't think that it would be hard for children of different personalities and preferences to addapt in this kind of environment. It's not only about the physical environment, but also to how the teachers motivate students to be themselves, and it's actually a good thing that in Japan, you need to value other people's comfort so you should not cause annoyance to other people. These things are being taught in their schools.

Physical borders are surprisingly important to the brain's memory system, if you go to another room to get something and forget it, you can go back to the room where you thought of it and remember it. Also the film "Awakenings" (based on a novel by Oliver Sacks) demonstrates that physical delineation is a faculty of memory. Temple Grandin's more humane slaughter house is built on the understanding that shadows, movement and stark contrast are disturbing to livestock.
This is a kindergarten built from love and understanding of children rather than trying to insert them into a conveniently-shaped adult world. It gives those with energy room to burn it off and the freedom to do so, and a lovely refuge as well as inclusion to heal the easily overwhelmed.
I bet those are some very well-behaved children :)

It is very good talk because they help us to become aware of the cuiddo of the small and realize that they have a very extensive imagination and that helps them to develop new things if we give them the opportunity to do it

great school! It's a shame we don't have such creativity in Italy. The only thing I don't agree with is the noise... But the project is based on great ideas! I think parents are the worst ennemies of their kids, when they want to protect them too much. I have a private school in Italy, and did the project myself. It's not such a great school, but I constantly have to deal with parents who are worried about all sorts of things... I wouldn't be able to imagine what running such a school would be like, at least in Italy.... quite a few parents wouldn't choose the school because they would consider it too dangerous.....
I wish they would openly credit Maria Montessori. That's the philosophy the school is following.

I worry for the innocents who will be destroyed by the minions of the beast. Tribulations has not truly begun yet, the rising violence, hate and bile of its evil servants, we know this will grow. Persecution of God's loved ones will grow worse. But the time of Jesus' return grows closer, so that is the upside ... watch, wait and be patient, and stay strong in your belief, for that is what will save you, God is the only way, and Jesus the only path to follow. That Sick cult of death follows Satan (allah) ... and more succumb to its evil cluthces, even the head of the Catholic church has succumbed. I know not the words to type, but I know we can only keep the TRUTH getting out as much as possible, and pray that the strength of the Holy Spirit blooms in more and more people, turning others to the light, and away from the darkness.
