Been making sheaths for 10+ years, and this is quite literally the perfect tutorial. Short, sweet, and exactly the information one would need to replicate it.
Hey thanks Aree
Kyle
Attention to detail, the finer detail that most people let slide, the difference between a Master Smith & me. In due time, ill be there too. I haven't yet started sheath making but when it's time I'll have the right tools and will remember, details.
@@elementmetalworksofficial
I'm a Lady. Watching this Master & other great blacksmiths is the best way to learn proper technique. I love watching Kyle. He's amazing. I'll go to your channel also, I watch lots of bladesmiths, thankQ for the invite.
Yup
The hack of shaving the middle pine on the inside blew my mind. Great video as always!
Pine = part, of course
I loved that you used the safety beveler to knock down the center of the sheath to make a smoother fold. it looks like it works way better than my gouge. I also like using the belt grinder to round over the outside edges of the sheath as opposed to using an edge beveler. that worked out real well too thanks for the tips and love the channel
Glad you’re here Jeffrey
Cheers
Jeff/Dad
HAHAHA The blow dryer scene was Hilarious!!!🤣
Beautiful sheath
That sheath compliments the knife so well. Truly beautiful workmanship. One day...
A pleasure to watch you work with attention to detail and the shark skin gives it a really beautiful look and finish.
Thank you for the tips with the sunshine cloth and buffing before finishing
You know what makes that sheath really pop???
That K ROYER blade inside it!!!
The hair dryer scene was hilarious! 😂
Good times Randy
Cheers
Dad
I think the same. Great.
My personal favorite is ray skin. Love the pebbled finish and it ages beautifully. Wears like iron too. Great info as usual here Kyle. ✌
Parabéns pelo trabalho. As facas ficaram perfeitas. Atenção a todos os detalhes. Meus parabéns. Acho que o próximo projeto possa ser uma kukri com o padrão de damasco em mosaico. Mais uma vez parabéns pelo trabalho. Admiro muito o seu trabalho. Que a força esteja com você.
The succes here, is that you made it fit both the carbon handle looks and also fit, the overall shape of the knife. That's another great option, that you can't have with production knives. You nailed it!!!
Hey thanks Greek
Dad
so smooth beautiful and elegant.
Hey Kyle I just love watching you sir. I really enjoyed watching the Leather making because I love to watch leather making on other channels. Ur work is impeccable… keep doing what u do…such talent and skills u have!
I appreciate that!
Glad to see the blade master works as usual. 👍
A ton of useful and practical info, Kyle. Love your vids, man. Keep doing what you do.

A sheath, not a scabbard. 😎
Cheers Royers! 🍻
Scath or shabbard???
Good times my friend

@@KyleRoyerKnives - Good times indeed!
Thanks for the tutorial!
If you have not tried making and using a stitching pony to hold the sheath while sewing, I think you have have really missed out.
Word of warning about drilling holes in the welt rather than using a pony and diamond awl. Kyle makes it look easy, but the rest of us mere mortals need take great care that the sheath does not tilt as this makes the exit holes lie too close to the edge, or worse, wander unevenly. That was the biggest reason I stopped drilling and started using a diamond awl, if it started coming out outside of the pre-cut groove, I could back it up and adjust the angle back on target.
I really enjoy just watching you, the work seem to be impeccable,,MOST EXCELLENT,, ,UNFORTUNATELY ,I DO NT HAVE THE TOOLS ,BUT I DO HAVE AN IMAGINATION, BUT I LIKED,AND ENJOYED YOUR VIDEO
Hey thanks Frank

@@KyleRoyerKnives it's my pleasure SON.
Great job on the sheath, it looks awesome with the shark skin!
As usual great workmanship, very meticulous, a top job. Always enjoy your videos, thorough and informative. Regards from Down Under.

Thanks for this cool Video. Was realy fun to watch
Except for the backside grind, this looks exactly like my favorite knife. The s&w jaguar. Right down to the handle and sheath
Got one sitting right here.
Thanks Kyle. It's no dig, such a sleek design. I used to have a Taurus Ultralight .38 with a matching redwood handle. Kept the knife though.
Brother, leather worker here…you did all the wrong things while making that sheath, all the wrong methods. AND TOTALLY MADE THE NICEST PIECE! It’s that artistic touch you have bro, so awesome! Keep it comin!
I know making sheaths isn't your favorite thing to do, but the resulting product sure looks like you love it. Well done.
Also, the video making and editing are really looking great. It's really come a long way. Go Team Royer!
Thank you! ~Josh Royer
exelente trabajo,gracias me gusto mucho
They look great!!
Enjoyed your video and I gave it a Thumbs Up
Thanks so much
@@KyleRoyerKnives You're very welcome!!!
Amazing. Good job bro
As always a work of a true master even if the leatherworking is not your favorite thing on a knife build, u inspired me to do my own sheaths for my knives, one tip I will add for beginners who see this video, if you round the sheath like Kyle mark the stitches at least 4mm from the edge , or else u will be too close to the stitches, and be careful when drilling the drill bit will wander on thicker parts of the sheath if not handled with care.
Copy copy my friend
Dad
love your channel !!!
That's a definite thumbs up, nice.
Before I retired I owned a deep sea fishing charter boat business here in Florida. We made lots of shark trips. Never once did I think about shark skin being used for anything. I can still get sharks. Maybe I'll learn how to tan them.
Spectacular
Do it my friend

Hey thanks. Merry Christmas
Nice!
Hi dear as always you are the beste of the beste from algeria with love 🇩🇿🇩🇿🇩🇿❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Hey thanks Adoul
Team Royer
Nice! How do you prevent the drill bit from wandering when you're drilling that thick of a leather? I'm still struggling on that part
Using the Dremel helps. 35000rpm 👍🏻☕️🔥⚔️
Dad
Aweslme video. I hope to own one of ur knives one day.
Love your videos
Hey thanks David
Kyle
That is about the only thing I have found my dremel work station to be good for.
Theres way too much slop to be using it for drilling anything more than this.
It is good for finishing edges with a sanding drum and locked at a 90° angle, but only for small sheaths I have found.
I suggest trying a j-roller for the contact adhesive process. Much easier and more even pressure applied imo. And cheap.
Awsome :)
Thanks for following along with this build! We can't wait to start the next one. Can you guess what we are making next? ~Josh Royer
I get my leather and tools from Springfield Leather Company. I'm really good friends with some of the people who work there. ~Kyle Royer www.springfieldleather.com/
My guess is some kind of knife or sword. Lol
Coffin Handle cowboy Bowie???
As always , amazing and informative
You might want to try an adjustable depth gouge instead of the skiving tool.
Better than drilling holes in leather, is using an awl.
This way, there is no material removed, but the leather is going to hold onto your stitching much better.
Good job Kyle as always, you are very skillfull and inspiring for the people. I wonder “Gum Tragacanth” where did you get it?
Springfieldleather.com
Making an ax next?! That would be nice!!!
Excellent video! I notice that when you are drilling the holes for your stiches with the Dremel Drill-press sometimes what appears to be smoke or steam comes out. What causes that? Thanks.
I'd pick on you for the grinder gaff, but more than once I have been trying to trigger an oscilloscope thinking WTH is the matter, only to look down and see the leads sitting on the bench.
Oops. Never done that before 😜🤭😜
Glad you’re here John
Team Royer
Kyle have you done modelling before? cos you look like a pro 😎
Can you harden spring steel by air cooling it slowly? I tried it once and it hardened pretty well but idk if it is good or not
Spring steel 5160 heat treats well around 1525 degrees then pending on use tempers for us around 400 degrees +/-
Not sure of your particular application
Keep Forging On my friend

I got a couple would burnishers for I got a couple of wood burnishers for the Dremel and the cordless is do Edge's I just used Hickory beads with a Groove in it and some wax after wetting

Admiro de mais o trabalho do Kyle Royer, mas tem uma coisa que me deixa agoniado, as bancadas e ferramentas são instaladas baixas de mais pra ele KKK.
Is that a true saddle stitch? Typically you have to do those one stitch at a time to get them to interlock? Am I missing something?
Great sheath, where do you get the shark skin?
Springfield leather company
Cheers
Dad
Hey mate are you sure that this is a proper saddle stitch? I learned that in a saddle stitch each stitch is a knot. So if any loop of the stitch gets damaged it does not affect the other stitches.
Yup. Tutorial is awesome but that is not a proper saddle stitch.
Your right a saddle stitch is 2 needles passed threw one hole to make a knot inside.
Came to the comments but i'll rest my case here.. no need to rub it in
@@peterspaltman I think Kyle is using chrome tanned leather... hard to tell, but personally it's veg. Tan all the way
@@elementmetalworksofficial not cool to promote yourself on a master bladesmiths channel. We are all big fans of Kyle's and support him because he's a great guy and craftsman. I'm sure you can make things but this is his CZcams page!
What size bit are you using? I am still search for the happy medium as far as bit sizes go. It seems like have found a lot too small and even more too big.
Try 1/16” on practice piece

Beautiful work as always, Kyle. Sheath making is my absolute least favourite part of knifemaking.
I run my own "hobby" leather biz. If you want to source out your sheaths, send me a message. Grunt Leatherworks on Facebook.
How do you ensure the shark skin is ethically sourced?
How it is that razor sharp blade doesn't cut through sheath while you take it out/in sheath?
Good question my friend
The blade gently rubs on the welt.

I'd like to see a mastersmith make users not ultra premium wall hangers or tabletop denizens. I'm not saying there isn't a market for that- luxury goods is a large market. When I get my MS I'm making mono-steel users with my MS logo right on em!
James roudenbaugh makes great users and hes a MS
I have a user I got from Kyle. It was a custom ordered hunter. It is my favorite. Also one of the rarer mono steel knives he has made. There is a picture of it on his website. www.kyleroyerknives.com/hunter-gallery?itemId=k5cba77ceobsg1wh7wcfhjh10o8h3i

Ever made one from alligator skin?
If someone was lucky enough to buy one of your knives they’d be an idiot not to want you to make a sheath. Even if you are putting the knife on display like the art they are. I’d want the sheath beside it. That’s just my opinion though.
I think it would be a good option to subtitle your videos to Spanish please
Very like your voice but the music is destructive
do you do anything poorly?
