  • A video of the summers boat diving for Bass off the South Llyn Peninsula, some stunning spearfishing sessions and excellent fish shot.
North Wales is one of the best areas for spearfishing in the UK, with far more fish than Cornwall or Scotland, and large numbers of Sea Bass.
The marks are varied, with thick kelp at some, and rocky reefs at others. In this video I go through a few different marks and explain a bit about the tactics used to hunt Bass at each.
If you enjoy the video like & subscribe to the channel, it really helps me out!

When spearing you barely ever see the bigger bass, they’re too wary. The line anglers catch more big fish, I’ve barely shot any over 5lb

Yes Jack! Not everyday you see a familiar face in the recommended videos! I'm always watching stuff like this but it's absolutely never UK based! Lovely stuff! 👌👏

Thanks! I had so many problems with it jamming in Ireland, as an ex-Marine I'm so picky about safety, on the surface and when moving it's permenantly on but now I take it off as soon as I hit the bottom and settle

Loving your work Jack - good drills! I've never dived in the UK, only bream, S.B. and Dentex in warmer climes. Was thinking about making a trip to North Wales. 7mm all year round or can you get away with 5mm in the summer?

    • @jackmetcalfe8542

North Wales is 16-17 degrees in July to September, I personally prefer 7mm all year, depends on how warm you run though

Great video Jack, I’ve watched this a few times over the Winter to keep my spirits up for the new season. Some great spearing and lovely locations.
Question - have you ever seen any Black Bream? I’ve had Gilthead on the Llyn but I’ve never even seen a Black Bream - I say it’s my target species every year but never get one. Maybe 2023 is finally going to be the year!

    • @jackmetcalfe8542
      @jackmetcalfe8542  Před rokem

Haven’t seen a bream, tried a few areas near Llanbedrog but no sign of them, planning on trying marks much further west in the Bardsey sound with much more depth this season so hopefully will find one!

@@jackmetcalfe8542 Similar, I've dived loads of spots between Pwllheli and Llanbedrog and never seen a black. I've had gilts near Llanbedrog and at Aberdaron, I know 3 people, myself included who've found them there - always in the same spot. I've heard of people catching blacks off Bardsey island so definitely worth a look. You should try motoring over to Sarn Badrig, that's meant to be the real hot spot. If I can get my boat sorted out, I recon it's where I'll finally find them. I've got some GPS spots somewhere to try - happy to share if I can find them!

@@MatthewSmith-dy6we clearly these clips are taken over the course of many sessions. The difference in visibility should make this very obvious.
But there’s always people in the CZcams comments who want to be negative and pick at things

@@jackmetcalfe8542 Not at all, im not ever negative on purpose but sadly I see a lot of people in north wales not obeying the rules... If you are abiding by the limit and you are aware of these as a positive input may I suggest you make a point of this in your future videos to make others aware who dont know the rules?? Im glad you corrected me and im sorry if I came across negative.

@@MatthewSmith-dy6we that’s fair, I’ll mention it in future videos
The clips shown here are taken from June - August 2022, I rarely hunt Bass and concentrate more on Flatfish and Pollock, so I completely get how 5+ dives worth of footage make it look as if I slaughtered an entire shoal!
One thing I’ll definitely mention is the best size of bass to eat, I find 45-50 cm fish the best as anything bigger than that tends to have tough meat and a lot of worms in the flesh
