- 2022 was a big year but 2023 is set to be even bigger. We (hopefully) won't be digging quite as much or lugging around so many tonnes of material, but we are setting our sights on big PROGRESS for this year.
Join us for a walk and talk around the property and find out all we've got in store for the year - both inside the house and out on the land.

For the garden .
1 Just stick to a few basic food items. Potatoes, tomatoes, cabage, herbs . No more than 6 basic items and plant progressively through the year.
2 Definitely keep to no dig!
3 Make time to put in your vines this year. In five years ehen you want to make wine,. you'll be so glad you did.
For the house. Get your basics fixed first. 1 Watertight roof, windows, chimneys and doors.
2 internal structure alterations walls and floors
3 plumbing
4 electrics
5 fitting out.
I worry that you are working so hard getting the sub ground floor fixed up but that the building above is leaky and rotten and will ruin all your hard work and nice things.
I must add. I am a veteran of old house rebuilds and learned the above lessons the hard way.
We have a company in the states that produce the insulated underfloor panels for running in floor heating tubing. Tubing snaps into the panels. If you buy direct, they will take room dimensions and tubing entry points and produce a tubing map for the most efficient use of tubing runs. As far as your garden, you're going to hate me for this. We gutted and remodeled our first house. When we had large projects on the go, we would let the garden go fallow that year. We found some local producers, at two farm markets, who were willing to supply us with cannable quantities of produce. Because we bought larger quantities, bushel basket size, they were often willing to give us really good pricing. Because small canning tomatoes come ripe at such a fever pitch, we could actually buy them almost as cheap as we could grow them ourselves. The place looks great btw. I don't think your schedule is lofty in the least. I've seen you work, you'll do fine. Thanks again.
Although you have a functional, even elegant, tent residence, "camping out" is not a long-term situation, and it grows old over time. A year from now you will hopefully be settled in to your warm, dry, ground-level digs with creature comforts like running water and a flush toilet! You have all the steps to your goal planned and sequenced, and I look forward to watching them happen. Crack on!

Hi Guy & Kylie. We've only just found you, but enjoying looking back over some of your videos. We live in Spain, moved here 17 years ago from the UK. Bought some land, and for 6 years lived on the land in a little wooden Chalet, no water, no electric, no mod cons. Best years ever, and no problem with our children, Grandchildren , friends all visiting. Eventually we built a stunning home, and after another 10 years we got itchy feet, and fancied maybe downsizing because of our age, and another project. We didn't move far from our other house, bought an old property that had been unlived in for over 20 years, so the hard work continues. Friends think we are mad, but we are not your typical Brits abroad 🤣. You two are a joy to watch, your enthusiasm is catching, and your place is beautiful. The house looks like a small Chateau, and will be stunning. We moved into our new property in May 2022, and already feeling very settled. Finally got running water, bathroom and Solar, so very comfortable. Enjoy every minute of your project, even the bad bits. We look back, and it's been hard, but so worth it. Hi guys, just a matter of interest, I have been very impressed with your videos, and have watched about 8 so far. I wish I could have commented on a few which I have watched today, that could have helped you, but I will leave that for another time. I will be turning 70 next month, and you have a contagious spirit, so if someone has already mentioned to you about bringing chickens like bantams and silkies to help keeping them insect free. Both are excellent for pest control. We also had geese for our security for early warning against thieves, snakes, night apes (pookies) that jumped around in the trees during the night. Like your free range chickens you have now need feeding, as the other chickens I mentioned you don’t need to feed except having water. On our farm in Africa we did not kill our guinea fowl, pheasant, partridge, and quails, because they would keep our lands free from grubs and bugs including flying insects. We also had a lot of guavas, peaches, plums that would be full of worms, insect bites and we were not able to eat them. So after introducing the chickens I mentioned above we lost a few 1% instead of 99% of our crops. We also planted marigolds boarding our vegetables garden and especially interplanted around our tomatoes, cabbages and other vegetables. In those days we called it companion planting. Have you looked into getting an ECOFLOW , portable power station.
I watch a lot of Brits, renovating French chateaus. They all use an ECOFLOW to get power for renovation projects, as many of the chateaus and outbuildings have no or limited electricity.
They are charged by solar power.
Check out “The Pethericks” on CZcams. Billy has made videos about it.
Chateau La Lacelle and Chateau La Ferte use them as well.
Both of theses chateaus need to be restored from scratch, like your house.
La Lacelle spent 2 years in a caravan. They are in the house this winter.
Very lovely and inspiring family on a limited budget.
Their Chanel is called “Escape to the Dream”
The had to install a septic tank, water, electricity.
There was nothing in the Cottage ( former stable) or the attic of the chateau.
The family is as handy and recycling savvy as you are.

Things I've learnt this year in Central Portugal which you mostly covered in this vlog. It's very wet and drainage is a big thing/job. You can never have enough solar panels or batteries. Vegetables really want to grow and there is always a glut so plant less next year. Timetables are a fantasy so just try to enjoy the journey and the destination will arrive eventually. Here's looking forward to another year of interesting ideas and content.
The old garden saying goes "The best time to plant perennials is 5 years ago. The next best time is now" is SO true. If you can possible squeeze in planting some vines now, even without any infrastructure or soil improvement, it would be wise!
I’m glad I found your channel it brings back memories, took us almost 3 years to complete “2 years 11 months & 6 days” 😅 we lived in 30 foot travel trailer with two children, a dog, a very large dog and a cat 😫 but we survived it and didn’t own the bank. Take your time you will get there, one day at a time 😊

I poop in a bucket. Survive off nothing but rainwater and NO plumbing. I heat water on the stove and bath in a 40gal stock waterer. I do have electricity and a wood stove. I have lived like this for 5 years. I am SO over it!! I want a flushing toilet and running water. I can live without all the rest.
For me gardening is frosting on my cake of life. I finish other stuff so I can get lost in the garden without guilt. You have alot on your plate I'm already convinced of your future success. God bless
As someone who is in building industry I take my hat off to you two, it’s the last thing I want to do after a busy day!
To dehumify old and moist stone walls, you need to find the source of humidity, dry it using heavy duty industrial heater/dehumifier machinery, and insulatd it from the ground. Also the room is the most important, if it leaks just to start repairing/replacing it.
We have a Panasonic Aquarea air source heat pump; well insulated house as yours will be and solar panels. Summer and winter (we live in the south of france in the Ariege where temps were in the 40's in the summer and can be well in the minus' in the winter) the inside temperature is running at a constant 20 degrees in the winter and around 15- 20 in the summer. The Air source heat pump heats a massive old stone bastide through trad. radiators and a 2 bedroom gite adjoining. We have loads of hot water all year around... Its simply amazing. Our standing order is 50 euro a month and we get a pay back of 30 - 35 euro a month. So our total electric bill (heat light ovens etc) is around 15 euro a month. I would thoroughly recommend it! I am afraid I hate underfloor heating. I worked for years on it and its hell on your feet. I have had conversations with people who have installed it with a heat pump and they have been really disappointed. The heat pump is constantly going and the heat in the house takes around 3 days to heat the thermal mass before you feel the benefit of it. It then retains at a stable temperature.. as I said.. ours is 20 degrees upstairs and downstairs in this house. Heating the thermal mass of the floor (and below) as well as the structure is, what I have heard, why people have been disappointed by the performance.

We also have been taking renovation projects for quite some time and we are finishing our final one shortly. I'm Brazilian, I'm 56 and John is English, and just turned 67. So it's time to finish this one and enjoy. Age and some health issues won't permit another one. We lived in UK for many years and we moved to Brazil some years ago and it's now our home. We understand your project, location, your goals and also sympathize with the obstacles you are facing. So, overall, I would like to say, keep the good work and thanks for sharing it with all of us. In all your videos you shared different aspects of your project, but one thing you've have not mentioned is about "security ". You have a lot of tools, machines, equipment. How do you address this issue? Just wondering if it is a tranquil and safe place. Can you tell us about it? Thanks 😘
Your priorities are important. It appears you are keeping focused. Your comfort is the most important and I’m guessing you are dividing your work up depending on the seasons. You have both done amazing work. Well done you are both so inspiring.

As someone who's also in the middle of a renovation, not as big and as multifaceted as yours I completely empathise with your situation. I did take your point Guy, in that your have to avoid starting more projects in the middle of the ones your already doing, something I found myself doing even now. 2023 is going to be a year of challenges and a sense of achievements and we're lucky enough you two share it with us.

We brought floor radiant films from S. Korea and set it up in N. CA, and it was a much simpler method about 15 years ago. S. Korea has many floor heating system options and is worth it to check out.

There are electric mortar pointing machines. It may help you speed up the process and save your arms.
I’ve also seen some people use a piping bag.
I've been watching you two for I think close to 1.5 years. You are so hard-working. I love the time-lapse videos, so more of those would be fun. Watching your vids I'm thinking you should put together a book of your experiments and tests. What worked, what didn't. Especially with the construction of the buildings. You could get down to detailing materials and "How Tos". I believe there is a market for such a book in Portugal/Spain, etc. Anyway, I will continue to watch your progress. I cannot wait to see the finals of the interiors.
Having done what you are doing (to a lesser extent as our property did not need so much work doing to it) in France and living there for 12 very happy years I wish that we could have had a club to join . We were in a rural area 5minutes walk from a large village with, amenities, but with no English speaking people around. Our French speech was poor to begin with and life would have been smoother if we had had people to thrash problems out with. We did some searching but other English people were either too far away or only part time residents. Love your vids, I have subbed as I want to follow your path to see how you get on. Good Luck.
Definitely investigate a Positive Input Ventilation system to help keep fresh air moving through the house and all but eliminating condensation and mould.
We’re planning on a MVHR system which should sort everything. Not this year, but before we finish the ceilings etc of the ground floor

I would repair one window every week, starting with the one that leaks the most!
We had electrical floor heating installed. With our solarsystem and battery storage we survive well the cold months. The reaction time is minutes, thermostate app controlled. No future maintenance needs or risk of water damage in a pipe. We're pretty happy.
I think downsizing the garden is a good idea. It’d be nice to see the progress on the house.
Big plan this year . My husband and I rebuilt our three car carport which is attached to our house the roof is solar panels only we have sealed between each panel with sealant and it is dry. We will be putting in some small fans in the roof space to send the heat created under the panels and send it into the house in the winter and send it outside in the summer no need for roof tiles 😁
Pro tipp make sure to install water and power outlet next to the toilets, a 200 euro bidet toilet seat add on will be a top investment, especially in warm climate, trust me.
All sounds great, the only thing I would reconsider is when to plant the new vines. You're looking at at least 5 years before you'll start harvesting them for wine. The way you two get through the stuff.. you can see where I'm going here can't you?

We are looking around for a future and soon I realized that these old caves might need a floor heating, woodburner or heatpump.
However today I realized that even a wall heating could be nessesary.
We are building in the Netherlands with a 2 wall system and isolation, and a air space against moist.
I’m sure that what ever we start, a new roof with water gutters and overhang is a good way to start.
I’m learning a lot from the pair of you. Makes my heart skip a beat! As far as I’m concerned.

Hemp walls are quite good.
The Hempcrete wall sounds like a sort of straw and hardboard wall panel my father used in the sixties . From memory it was called strummet and sat on steel runners.Also remember it in classroom ceilings at school between the i beams .It was for internal use only. Anyway you have plenty to be getting on with . Looking forward to see how it goes. When people say they have a plan I always think of the meeting in the book The Hitch Hikers Guide To The Galaxy where Arthur meets the planet designer Slartybartfast and says. "The best laid plans of mice and men" and Slartybartfast turns and and says"What have men got to do with it"? How are the mice in Portugal. Apologies too anyone who is not aware of the book for wasting your time.

With so much land and composting is in order, you might consider composting toilets ; a lot to choose from .

Hey, a little suggestion foir something that is not done often:
If you use ground heat for the heat pump, the ground will year after year get colder, thus making the system less efficient. What we've done, is make 2 loops. One loop to get heat out of the ground during the winter, and another one to put heat back into the ground during the summer with our solar heat collectors (heatpipes). This way, the ground stays at the same temperature year after year and the whole systems stays efficient. Feel free to contact me if more info is needed. This is not usually done, so it will not be available as a kit or something.
If I may make a suggestion for your aches and pains. It is called a percussion massager. I am 74 years old, and have tried just about everything there is for muscle pain. The way you guys work, you will love the effect the massager can have on you. They have a rechargeable battery, and can be picked up online for less than $100.00 US, and are worth every penny of it. Just a thought.
Will you do rainwater collection from the car port? It sounds like it will have some decent area so it will make a nice difference during low rain months

I'm not much of a fan of the new camera so far. It looks a bit washed out and less easy to watch. But maybe it will improve when you are getting to know it better.
1 suggestion about you wine project. I would suggest you spend some time this year and plant the vines now. They take a couple of years to mature. My grandfather was wine maker with large vineyard and I know it from him. The first couple of harvests from the vines are good eating but the wine from them is not very good (not enough sugar in the grapes when they are young).
Just to perhaps be annoying, perennials for the garden, rosemary, sage, and bamboo.
Bamboo definitely needs control, but it has so many uses and Portugal, Spain, both grow these plants nicely.
Hemp, not perennial, but easy to just plant and harvest the seeds (food) or fibres. The benefits for your land, very deep root systems.
But, maybe the laws regarding agriculture may prohibit both.
Hempcrete is also good for sound dampening. I look forward to seeing you put that up, understand the process, and see the finished wall/s. Curious about the whole process.
Watching how you do things instructs my own mind to understand more than just watching videos.

Thanks for 23 plans. You have added the dehumidifier, what about a heat source to further reduce drying time? How critical is the upper level fireplace leak? When do you plan to start with your solar panel upgrade?
Have you thought of having a stay and work weekend?
Letting people camp in their own campers on a part of your lot (or in the town somewhere) and they help you work for the weekend or week. It could be a crash course in helping others decide if that is a lifestyle they are interested in living. Different times of the year would lead to different "guests" that all have different specific skills to best help you guys out also.

Just a tip, the new camera looks great, but I think you need to lower the ISO a bit, as it makes the image a bit noisy, especially when shooting in darker places!
We’ve done some experiments today, so keep an eye out for a mid week video sharing the different tests. We seem to have found a couple of improvements
What external heat pump/water tank are you looking at? I think the options for those units are pretty limited in the USA, but that's what I had wanted for my home. We're just catching up on heat pump mini splits, but I'm pretty sure that my best option would be to store my heat in a water tank, and distribute that energy as needed
Sorry to hear you are having trouble getting a quote for the heating. We have lived here for 15 years, and I am afraid I do not have any words of wisdom to speed up the process. Have enjoyed watching your efforts from the beginning.

You have done such good work, just doing French drains around the house must of been back braking
Keep in mind it takes roughly 3 years for grape wines to start producing. The earlier you plant them (which is not that hard) the sooner you will enjoy your own wine, which will be unique, as oppose to veggies, which taste the same whether you buy them or grow yourself.
