Wang Leehom Receives Berklee Honorary Doctorate

In recognition of his extraordinary contribution to the arts, Wang Leehom '99 received an honorary doctorate from Berklee College of Music on Sunday, November 13, 2016, at Boston's Symphony Hall.
Wang is the best-selling Mandarin-language musician of his generation. His songwriting revolutionized contemporary Chinese music by infusing pop, rock, jazz, hip-hop, R&B, and classical with traditional Chinese music, from aboriginal folk to Beijing opera. His albums sell millions of copies around the world. Among his many honors are multiple Golden Melody Awards, the Taiwanese answer to the Grammy Awards. Wang has expanded his broad appeal by writing and recording with a range of artists, from Tony Bennett to Avicii.

Here is my personal story how I came across one of Leehom's early songs ("Last night")...
One hot, summer afternoon, I was approached by young Chinese student (@ the VIU Nanaimo Campus) who asked me to help him in learning "Last night", the guitar part. As we got into details, he confessed that he picked up guitar because the girl he fell in love with was a big fan of Wang Leehom and he would love to sing that song to her exactly as Leehom did. Well..., how could I say NO to such a lovely request. It took me 20 min or so to figure out the guitar part and, the next day, my newly acquired "student" picked up the whole song in no time, happy and anxious to see his young lady. I don't know what happened to this young man and his love. All I've learned from this experience is that we never know how our daily work, art, craft, you name it..., may affect somebody's life.
It is such a pleasure to see Wang Leehom receiving acknowledgement for his work from one of the most prestigious music colleges in the world. Congrats Lee. You've touched the hearts of one young and one not so young men and, perhaps, many others 🐳
