  • Though the use of solar panels is on the rise, it still only represents 1.5 percent of total energy consumption in Europe. There are many reasons for this, starting with the intermittent nature of solar energy due to bad weather, the difficulty of storing it, and the cost of solar panels.
    Researchers at the Institute for Microtechnology in Neuchatel, Switzerland are working on ways to make solar energy more cost-effective. This includes using less expensive metals such as copper, as well as new technology to better absorb sunlight.

    Actually you're wrong! Photovoltaics contribute 4% of total energy consumption in the EU as of 2014. This doubles every two years or less. Meaning 8% by 2016 and 32% by 2020. Germany is leading the way, and already have 6% solar, scheduled to have 12% by 2016 and around 50% by 2020.

    • @701983
      @701983 Před 9 lety +1

      sonofhendrix Electrical energy consumption is not the same as total energy consumption. Germanys primary energy consumption is about 3800 Terawatthours per year. And Germany produced only 33 TWh with photovoltaics in the year 2014. Less than 1 percent of the total energy consumption. Sure, there is potential for much more. But it's a long way to go.

    First, 2:51.. she is cute... next, why not affix IR converters to collect the absorbed heat energy and covert that to electricity... The efficiency drops with heat, so once you siphen that hear into a mechanism to extract energy from the heat, this process can be tuned to cool the photo voltaic cells. Keeping them in their optimal operation zones... Just a thought... 15%...

      Paul Gdry Clever folks build solar furnaces alongside their PV arrays. you can do it very simply with a shallow box with a clear glass lid. Stack the box with used tin cans in parallel columns. air drawn in at the bottom is heated in the sunshine and can be fanned into the home, used to pre-heat water or converted into other energy... and you can do it for pennies... lots of videos on YT. i wouldn't try to overcomplicate the PV design by trying to incorporate thermal conversion... it will complicate the market which is still a black art to a lot of people
      The plan is quite simple for most people... INSULATE, INSULATE INSULATE, Generate from renewables and reduce your overall consumption. We all have too much shit plugged into the mains and we are hooked on electricals

    There's no dificulty in storing solar energy. Batteries have been around for five thousand years! We have much better batteries than they had five thouusand years ago. If you have solar panels on your roof you want to keep the snow off of them. of course you can't do that during a snow storm. You have ot wait until it stops snowing to clear the snow. You can build the mounts for the panels so they tilt upward providing a high angle to let the snow slide off. Of course that menas more cost in the beginning. Also you might need a hydraulic system for raising the panels. Especiallly if they have snow on them.

  • @rafaelgabrielsantos1246

    Graphene is the future... Cost is quite questionable

  • @LITLEZULU
    @LITLEZULU Před 9 lety +2

    Why not think of making panels the size of roof tiles then get the government's to make it the standard to use them. The government would benefit as the excess power can be but on the national grid. Millions of houses would be the energy producers. Would be expensive and crazy but worth it no?

    • @retoblubber
      @retoblubber Před 9 lety +1

      Matthew Murray solar shingles are already available for about a decade. Economically, they don't hold a candle to conventional, flat-plate PV modules.
      At this point of time, implementing laws to force people to buy and install any type of solar PV system on their roof is certainly not a clever thing to do, since the technology has just become economically viable in a number of places and soon will not need any support (subsidies) at all.
      Governmental policies, however must ensure that regulations are set into place to let solar PV unfold freely. That's, in my view, a much smarter way.
      If you want to force people, then maybe I could agree on electric cars. For example, I would be in favor to make EVs mandatory for taxi-companies.

      Matthew Murray Sorry, I don't understand what you mean. Are you sure you have thought this through?

    • @LITLEZULU
      @LITLEZULU Před 9 lety

      I'm saying that people should not have to pay for the solar panels just like they do not pay for regular roof tiles, roof tiles are supplied anyway before buying a house. I'm saying that the government and companies that deal with solar panels and property development should supply solar panels automatically for free like they supply regular roof tiles. Should all be included into the overall house cost.
      I'm not saying that the government should force people to buy solar panels but the opposite and get the government to supply solar panels or make it a regulation for property developers to include them when building houses like they include roof tiles or any building not just houses. We won't be the only ones that benefit from this, the environment of the country will, free power plants everywhere, that don't create environmental waste. It would save money.

    • @retoblubber
