  • A day before racing began at the Tour Down Under in January 2023, I caught up with long-time team mechanic Craig Geater and, without any warning (but with his approval) asked a few questions about building bikes for the team.
    He explains how the Giant Propel raced by Jayco-AlUla is essentially the same that you can buy, with modifications mainly coming on stem and handlebars sizing.
    Then, into some of the regular (tech) questions for the start of the 2023 cycling season: tyre selection? And what lube for the chain?
    This is part of a series on team bikes by #ridemedia at the #TDU2023.

      Paolo, it's not a deliberate thing... and there's plenty to like about the bikes.
      It's also great to see a bit of colour injected into the team's livery for the season.

    Still mixing 12s DA with 11s DA cranksets.. lessthanideal?

      Andreas, it's still early in the season - with these bikes set up in December last year...
      As Craig explains in the video, there are still issues with the supply chain but it all seems to be improving in 2023. The mix of components isn't ideal, no... but I expect that it will be remedied once the bikes, riders and mechanics are back in Europe and closer to the service course.

      @@ride-media how does that work? I always thought the 11 speed crankset was not compatible with a 12 speed cassette? As well as the front derailleur not set up for an 11 speed?!

    • @guntherschultz912
      @guntherschultz912 Před rokem

      @@LoaforDie the 12s front derailleur is compatible with the old 11s cassette because they share the same width with the new 12s cassette only problem is the old cranks are slightly thicker when paired with the 12s chains, reasons for chain slip when cross chaining

    Oh yeah I think some of the riders were just nervous about [watching other pro riders with god level bike handling crash because the brakes locked up causing them to slide off the road]

    yeah they werent issues, guys were just training their whole lives, getting dropped and losing contracts and races because the discs were rubbing at the wrong moment. But yeah it was just something to get used to.
