She proceeds to tell people, "That's a story not a lot people hear," after telling King David's most infamous story.
I haven't read the bible yet I'm 29 I barely started ❤❤
That part of David's story is downplayed HARD compared to the rest of this life. Just saying.
The version I learned was essentially "whoops he done goofed lol" as we spent not even 15 minutes on it. The story of him vs Goliath was several classes long.
Bang on. I’m a Christian, this has been taught in my church plenty of times. That’s the point of the story, he committed murder and adultery but he repented but it had ramifications that went through his genealogy just like God told him. Because of that transgression one of his sons raped one of his daughters to another wife and then his own son Absolom rose up to rebel and try and take his kingdom.
The Bible does not condone slavery. What is termed slavery in the Old Testament is indebted servitude and on the year of Jubilee they were all set free unless they chose to remain. It was a way of paying debts that couldn’t otherwise be paid.
It's a worldwide podcast. Most people aren't Christian.
The David story tells the truth about giving into lust. It's brilliant and actually shows how it can wreck your life.
Yep. Then you have Solomon who was the wisest man to date. He did many great things including building the temple. Despite his wisdom, however, he was persuaded by his wife to worship idols. The Old Testament is a series of lessons and failures. The failures lead to the flood and eventually the Savior. Everyone will know, one way or another.
If you are really nerdy that David story is a replaying of the garden of Eden pay attention to the words used. "David SAW, David Took, David hid... etc etc..." but if you are interested in stuff like that go deep in the meaning of the stories I highly recommend the bible project podcasts. They uncover the bible in a way that makes sense when you sit to think about it.

I think it's a bit more serious than simply lust.

The stories she told are literally some of the most well known in the entire Bible.
Thank you. I thought that maybe she was making a joke about this or something. I have probably forgotten a lot of the things I knew when I was a bible classes goer (as a kid) but even I remember King David’s story and the stories surrounding Jacob and his near descendants. 😂
I have never heard them ever so they are far from the most well know stories
To be fair. hardly any believer that actually read the Bible. They mostl;y hear the occasional feel good story told by a 3rd party,
Nope. I went to a Christian School K-12 and church 3X per week. These stories were NEVER told.
@@benmahon2764 You just said, "They aren't well known because I've never heard them!" XD
This is the perfect example of little knowledge is dangerous
Could you please elaborate? Legitimate question, I’m asking for knowledge not spite.
@@adamryerson2974 The proverb ‘A little knowledge is a dangerous thing’ expresses the idea that a small amount of knowledge can mislead people into thinking that they are more expert than they really are, which can lead to mistakes being made.
Oh you're going to try to make excuses for baby murder are you? Let's hear it then!
And excuses for slavery. Exodus chapter 21 in the book of lies
Listen... Upon character based philosophical and ethical deconstruction, the ONLY conclusion that you can come to is that the bible is SO GROSSLY morally and ethically inconsistent that in truth (and I know this is difficult to hear), it doesn't deserve the moral pedestal that's often thrust upon it... The bible's moral spectrum ranges from murderous baby killing genocide to societal pacifism and everything else in between... You can't depend on that in our modern age without cherry picking scripture to suit YOUR ideals... If both a genocidal maniac and pacifist can use scripture to validate their point of views with so called "Godly approval" then it tells you everything you need to know...
The bible is ethically inconsistent and anachronistic, that's a FACT not an opinion... Which is the subtext of the conversation.
That first story she mentions isn't a secret. There's an actual Veggie Tales episode about that episode.
I was gonna say, that story is Christianity 101. Basic example of lust
And yet it’s the Old Testament
Yeah, it's not a secret. It's in the "book of truth" that nobody reads. She didn't say That it was a secret. She said nobody knows about it because nobody reads it.... Because other people just tell them what are supposed to think about it.
And slanted.
Veggie Tales is a myth
This is a commonly known story among actual Christians it’s to show how even the most mightiest men can fall to sin when they don’t follow God
God killed a baby, though?
Was going to say we teach this regularly. I mean it's a great story. It teaches even the greatest person of God can fall and give in to temptation ruining all of the good works and deeds they made.
@@adamkinne6467 exactly if you go to the right church’s can learn the whole Bible
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
So is it true that God kills the baby?
The Bible says people push the truth away because they love their sin too much. It also says, "The fool has said in his heart, ‘There is no God.'" Deep down, people know there is a God, but they also know to acknowledge God would mean there would be moral accountability. People don't want that.
Absolutely because we all have a measure of faith that can move mountains. We're having the breath of God inside me like he does.
Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.
very well said brother @PeterBornAgain
Or it could be that the facts and the evidence isn’t sufficient enough to prove the existence of god and that its really not that evil to do very natural human things (provided nobody gets hurt)
@@nicholasforan9105there is no basis of morality without God. Why should it matter if someone gets hurt provided there is no God?
I can't believe we're still debating the validity of some parts of the Bible. See that's the problem. The bible has moments of historically accurate stories. But when the authors tell me these are gods words I gotta laugh. Do you guys really think God was ok with slaves? Do you think God really explained how to justify you owning humans? How about this. Show me something in the bible that exceeds the knowledge of the people when it was written. I'll wait
The Bible isn't supposed to only tell of warm and fuzzy events. It's a record of history that tells of how God interacts with His people.

God sacrificed himself, to himself, to save us from himself 🤦 right how logical
The Bible records things it does not condone.
Exactly, it's not just a rule book. It's an exploration of good and evil. Hero's in it sometimes do bad things. Thief and criminals in it sometimes do good things.
Much of the Bible is allegorical

So why use it as somewhere to get morality if it just records things and doesn’t condone them?
Much of the Bible is bullshit.

Here’s another interesting and violent Bible story for the comment section. There was a leader of the Canaanite army named Sisera. He and his soldiers were fighting against the Israelites under a leader named Barak. Sisera’s army fell and all of them were killed, but Sisera himself ran away. A lady named Jael saw him outside her house and she told him to come inside, that she was a friend and would protect him. He went in with her and she gave him milk to drink and a blanket. He told her to watch the door, and if anyone came by, to say that she was alone in the house. She agreed to this and Sisera laid on the floor with the blanket and fell asleep. Jael then took a hammer and nail, while Sisera was asleep, and drove it through his temple and nailed his head to the floor of her house. She left him just like that, and eventually Barak came by, still hunting Sisera. Jael met Sisera outside and told him she had the man he was looking for, and led him to the dead Sisera, his head still spiked to the floor.
One of my favorite stories. JAEL is a true hero!
@@yaee123 The fact you think this savage, barbaric murderer is 'heoic' is concerning.

some big discrepancies in the telling of the story of Tamar. After Judah lost his second son. His last son wasn't given to Tamar for two reasons, one, he was too young and the second is because Judah was afraid he might loose his last son. So he didn't promise Tamar that she will be the wife of his last son for these two reasons and not the one reason mentioned in the video.
Tamar went back to her home as instructed by Judah, again that is all that Judah does, he instructs her to go and wait at her fathers house. Tamar while at her fathers home wore cloths that is synonyms for someone who is a widow and grieving. She finds out that Judah is coming to where her fathers home is because he wants to sheer his sheep, upon hearing this Tamar has a plan. She knows that she isn't pledged to Judah's last son and she wants to take it upon herself to get pregnant. So she takes for cloths that are meant for grieving and switches them for cloths that is synonyms for a prostitute at that time. Main point here is that she is wearing a head veil and as such no one can see her face.
Judah walks into this town/village and sees this prostitute who is wearing a veil and he asks to sleep with her. This is where the video goes off the rails. She asks Judah what she will get in return for sleeping with him and she knows that this is her father in law and he doesn't know who she is. He says he will give her one of his sheep in his village/camp. Judah isn't at his camp/village, so this is supposed to be a promise for future payment. She asks him for a guarantee for this payment. He asks what she wants and she says she wants a seal with his cord and his staff. He agrees and he sleeps with her. Judah didn't sleep with her and not have payment, they discussed how Judah will pay her and she played him in this part of the story. Tamar isn't this poor innocent person and neither is Judah.
So she goes back to her fathers home and switches into her cloths meant for grieving. Judah returns to his camp and sends a friend to pay her but he cannot find her and he returns to Judah and tells him that she cannot be found. He is embarrassed that she has his seal and staff. But he makes peace with the idea that she has stolen it. We all now know that this was Tamar's plan, she didn't want a sheep, she was playing Judah and got proof of the person she slept with.
The video made it sound like Tamar became a prostitute because she wanted to make a living. This isn't true, she wanted to get pregnant from sleeping with her father-in-law. Plain and simple.
She got pregnant and Judah is told that Tamar is found to be pregnant and the assertion is that she prostituted herself. Judah wants her killed but before she is killed she sends him his staff and seal. Tamar honey potted Judah and got what she felt she deserved.
Moral of the story. Men need to keep it in their pants coz women who are just selling sex cannot be trusted. The other moral of the story is do what is right, Judah in his fear doesn't give assurances to Tamar that she will be married off, so when he didn't do that the rest of the story played out as it did. Judah is also the same guy who earlier discouraged his brothers from killing Joseph but instead mentioned to have him sold. Joseph lived and as per what is said in the bible he became the second highest in Egypt and also saved Egypt and his family from starvation. So Judah is seen as someone who loved his family when the rest of them were okay with killing one of them. He isn't perfect but neither is Tamar and all of them played their role.
Well put , also by God's providence Tamar gives Birth to Twins, Perez and Zerah, which from Judas line Comes King David, and ultimately our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, God is Sovereign over all, as Joseph said to his Brother's you meant it for evil but God meant it for good
im confused. Did Tamar had sex with her Father in law or played like she did??? And y he didn't go see Tamar back at her father house after he had sex with the "prosistute"( or he didnt)🤷
Also, it was Judah's duty as the patriarch to ensure his oldest son's lineage continued because he didn't have children before he died. That's why Tamar married his next son. But their first child would've been counted as the oldest son's to ensure his lineage continued. The brother didn't like that and refused to get her pregnant and the Lord killed him. Thus the duty of continuing the Judah's oldest son's lineage fell to his youngest son. This also was the custom so that that the Tamar would be provided for. Most marriages were arranged anyways back then so this wasn't that strange.
After Judah's youngest son became of age Judah shirked his duty to both provide for Tamar and ensure his eldest son's lineage out of fear that the Lord would kill that son too. (The Lord struck down his oldest son because he was wicked). What Tamar did was take it apon herself to both provide for herself and ensure her first husband's lineage. So, Tamar and Judah both sinned by fornicating but she did it for somewhat honorable reasons to pick up Judah's slack. So when Judah went to lead the stoning of her for prostituting (with him) she showed that he was lacking in his duties and morals and was more righteous than he.
@@loganwallace5854 a bit mistaken here. His youngest son wasn't of age at any point in this story. Tamar assumed that Jacob wasn't going to allow his youngest to be married to her. This was her reasoning for deceiving Jacob. They were both in the wrong but Jacob says that she was more righteous than him. So the assumption here is that Jacob knew he didn't betroth his youngest son to Tamar as he was afraid he too will be killed. But they both are wrong for what they did. Who knows if Tamar even cared for any of Jacob's children. If she was married to one of them is all she wanted. Key part here is that Jacob's youngest son wasn't of age to get married throughout the story but it is revealed that Jacob's only reason was probably that he was afraid his son would be killed for the same reasons.
@@TheFergo911 When Judah met Tamar and thought she was a prostitute, she saw that the youngest son was grown and wasn't given to her to marry as Judah had promised her. She had her grieving veil own and he came and asked to sleep with her. He acknowledged that he reneged on his promise to to her.

Her telling of the stories are incomplete, but Joe was smart to think there's layer to these complex plots
Important part of King David's story is that he really was caught up. He was out of place not where he was supposed to be. His men were fighting in his name but he was posted up in the rear. The prophet told David a story about two neighbors. The story made King David burn with anger to the point that King David said this neighbor must die. The moment King David realized he was the villain in the story he repented and Yahweh could feel his hurt and repentance. As a result he lost that child he tried to cover and his house was cursed. "THE SWORD WILL REMAIN IN YOUR HOUSE" They are fighting today as you read this.
Michelle starts by saying these stories have historical context. Proceeds to not include any of the cultural or historical context for the stories. JOE PLEASE HAVE SOMEONE ON TH E SHOW WHO ACTUALLY CAN PROVIDE CONTEXT AND UNDERSTANDS THESE EVENTS/STORIES TOLD IN THE SCRIPTURES
In the old testament it was Judah the son Jacob and the son begins the line of King David. Another element of this line is Lot who had Moab through incest with his daughter. Ruth is a direct descendant and King David is a direct descendant of Ruth.
The story of God, The Devil and Job was a more disturbing story then anything I read in the bible.
When david prayed after this he begged god not to lose the lord's favor, even if he lost everything else for his sin. Thats how the story ends. Saul asked to not lose his kingdom and power; david asked not to lose the lord's favor. A man after the lord's heart. The story is to teach us not to fall into adultery and lies. And it is always a serious problem if you end up mixed up in that stuff

My thoughts exactly
Why would the Old Testament authors include such embarrassing details with no “happy endings” in each book? It describes the constant failures and sin from Israel’s leaders, to prove the point that no man can conquer sin, we all need a savior. The Bible states this from the very beginning with Adam’s fall followed by God foreshadowing the need for a new Adam (Jesus) as God promised in Genesis 3 someone from Eve’s offspring would conquer the serpent and redeem mankind. All of it points to Christ.
That was like listening to children talk about their fathers job.
Jesus isn't going to redeem mankind, as for the last 2000+ year's a vast part of mankind neither needs or requires his assistance.
Genesis 6 other sons exist so John 3 16 lied
Amen, Brother.
The Old Testament is based on the Jewish Torah and was written in Hebrew. So no it doesn’t all point to Christ.
I grew up in church and the only stories that weren't taught were 2 in i think Judges. The first is were a crowd demanded that a stranger in town be given to them so they could rape him, but the man hosting the stranger instead gave them his female servant. So they beat and gang raped the girl and afterwards, she crawls back to her masters house and dies outside his front door. If i remember right, this starts a big conflict where cities go to war with one another. The second is when a man prays to God for victory in battle and promises to sacrifice the first thing that approaches him when he gets home. So after the fight his daughter who is his only child is the first to approach him. He then lets his daughter go and grieve her virginity on a mountain with her friends for a time, and when she returns he sacrifices her.
That first one is essentially a representation of the historicity of God separating himself from Israel. The woman being raped by strangers and then murdered by her master (literally dismembered and her parts sent across all of Israel) is one of the strongest examples of how far the culture had fallen at the time, "that such a thing could happen here" is basically what everyone's response was, which is why conflict arose from it. The heaviest aspect of it being that the woman's master had become so callous that he didn't just let her die on his doorstep, he disrespected her corpse and let everyone else know about it. It was one of the ultimate examples of the fall from grace at that time in the nation's history.
I was expecting the story of Jepthah's daughter as well. I think that is one of the most terrifying stories in the Bible. What an ignorant deal to make!

The story of Judah and Tamar is about Judah recognizing that she was more righteous than he was.
The entire family (all the way from Abraham), had a long history of deception. Judah was the brother who suggested that they sell their brother Joseph into slavery rather than killing him.
After this event with Tamar, the story picks up in Egypt, where Jospeh becomes the 2nd highest official in the land. When Joseph's brothers went to Egypt during a famine to find food for their family, they didn't recognize their brother Joseph. Joseph tried to frame his brothers, but Judah (after this story with Tamar took responsibility for his brothers. The incident sith Tamar, changed him. It humbled him into being a man who took responsibility.

David is immoral in the Bible while he's a messenger of god in the quran and is very ethical unlike the Bible version.
Not true the Bible clearly condones slavery as a perfect moral practice .
In clearly describes it as slavery in Exodus 21 and gives rules and conditions on how Jews can own slaves and how they can own fellow Jews as slaves by driving a spike through their ear to mark them as property .
Also In Leviticus God says "if a man lay with a man like he lay with a women he shall be put to death and his blood is on his own hands "
Clear as day !!
Also to stone to death unruly children and women who cheat on their husbands .
The Bible condoning murder and sitting it's own laws in place that it Deems morally acceptable .
The term they use is slavery so Christian apologist have a hard time getting around it .

If these stories were from random scrolls found in Egypt,
Joe would be marveling at how Humans were just as crazy back then as we are today.. but since they came from the Bible, he acts like we have to be careful when reading them 😂
The skeptic will never question their own skepticism.
Right! If someone said that they found these stories on a metal tablet on the moon he'd believe it.
The Bible is the word of God. You should be careful when reading it. There is no comparison between THE BIBLE and "random scrolls."
@@SalvableRuinare you out of your mind where do you think the Bible comes from😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

Rotting woman in the thumbnail is from Scary Stories to tell in the dark. That book creeped me out when i was like 13.
I miss that book series!!
The Toe Lady! Literally wearing a shirt with the same illustration rn 🤣
I thought I was the only one who noticed. We friends now
I’m an adult and it still gives me the creeps. That ghost lady was horrifying, but at least she ended up a good guy.
Wow! What a great example of non believers and their grasp of Our FATHER!
What dose she know about king David and Solomon’s temple ?
Always love hearing "women most affected" thrown into any random story like this.
I know! lol Oh the patriarchy!!!
why would you want to start shit? isn't the stupid men vs women war bad enough?
@@Dandelion560 My point exactly 👍
They are talking about these stories from the Bible like they are trying to make fun of or make the Bible look bad. God hates sin. These stories are in the Bible because they really happened and the Lord is trying to teach us lessons from other peoples mistakes. Just because it’s in the Bible doesn’t mean that God condones this bad behavior. They are historical facts that teach.
Really? Why are you following stories written by piss drinking desert people that couldn't explain the sun?
They're simply chatting in a relaxed atmosphere. I just don't get why Christians have to turn everything into a drama & then suggest we need lessons in life from this singular view point.

The David story is beautiful and heartbreaking and important
“The Bible is really violent”
tribal life in the Middle East in the Bronze Age was extremely violent
If you go to Sunday school you hear all the stories of David…..come on now😂🤣😂
I know, what's with the both of them? Joe acts like he was forced to learn about Christianity in school. In the 70's in Florida? huh? He must have gone to a Christian private school. If that were the case, an opportunity most kids didn't have; and it appears none of it stuck.
Right on. It’s sometimes surprising how little westerners know about the Bible. Then again, I know that most people barely read anything at all.
@@michaelrobertson1736 There is no universal experience of “westerners” when it comes to these things. If you are trying to say Americans then just say it.
That story is about Judah, the son of Jacob who became known as Israel. Rehab and Ruth are also in the line of Christ. There IS a message in that, at least, I have found one for me.
So what is the message?
Being from LOS ANGELES, I still don’t get how people live in SAN FRANCISCO lol it doesn’t seem real like the whole city looks like a Sitcom
The Bible is a great collection of books everyone should read and study. It also references other books I recommend reading and studying.
she asks Joe if he's read the whole Bible. He says yes, but later admits no. Most people are like this. They've read 1% but will lie to you and say they've read 100%. Unlike Joe, most of the people I talk to will dig in and defend the lie. What good does that do? You want to retain your ideas not based in reality? (1) Read the whole thing for yourself. Not that hard. Sure, it's a long work, but not that long. Or (2) trust me when I tell you where you're wrong. Don't like that? See (1).
I can’t explain why, but it’s weird to be discussing the Bible and smoking cigars.
I can explain why. You were conditioned...
No, it isn't weird, and I CAN explain why--you are imposing your cultural view of smoking as "bad" or "rebellious" onto the situation. What if they were drinking alcohol while discussing the Bible? What if it was beer? Whiskey? How about wine? Is wine better, since the Bible discusses wine more often, or do you associate religion with "lack of alcohol"? The Bible doesn't forbid smoking or drinking. It permits drinking and forbids alcoholism (or excessive drunkenness). Smoking is not mentioned.
Why? This comment makes no sense.

Abraham being commanded by God to make a human sacrifice of his son Isaac.
And what did you gleen from the story?
@@justonetime112 Now I know it was a test for the great patriarch but back then I took it as a brutal bronze age story, even when the angel stopped him.

God was giving Abraham a living image of how horrible the sacrifice of one's own Son is. The death of God's Son was necessary to pay for our sins...
@@justonetime112It's about how Abraham abandoned child sacrifice which was a common feature of Middle Eastern religions at the time
Another interesting thing, in the old days men didn't ask for "permission " to get laid
The Bible can be rough because it has a lot of beautiful things to say but also stories that are not for the faint of heart. I remember setting out to read the whole Bible when I was 18 and I think I stopped a couple of books into it. The Old Testament is brutal. I ended up doing it again and actually finishing it. Proverbs, Psalms, Job, Ecclesiastes, all beautiful books with great wisdom and knowledge. I still struggle with faith and religion to this day. Show me a picture of an orangutan and I can’t help but see a distant relative. This life is very weird when you get into a deep thought about it lol anyways, hope y’all have a good day!
What's funny to me though is that was probably the pg version of the other stuff that happened. Debauchery and dismemberment are just a few of the Things that occur in the bible that most people don't know about

Who hasn’t heard of this
It blows my mind today How many people complain about the bible and yet have very little clue as to what is actually written in it. It's not a rule book or a whole bunch of different holier than now People period it is filled with concepts and problems that we still have to.Day period the Bible is giving us direction on how to avoid those mistakes.
It’s important to know the difference between prescription and description
The story of Bathsheba is pretty well known for anyone who has spent enough time in church. It's a lesson teaching that even the beloved King David can fall to sin, and he was punished accordingly.

I was taught that the people in these stories knew that they had to preserve and continue the boodline of the Messiah. So, like with David, he knew he was supposed to have a child with Bathsheba but was punished because he took matters into his own hands instead of waiting for God to arrange things.)
It’s wild how Joe will doubtfully question every word a Christian says calling him to believe in Jesus, but when a non-believer wants to criticize the Bible he takes it point blank without questioning their motive.
The Bible doesn't contradict itself.
Like Almighty God doesn't have the ability to preserve his Word.😅
He can speak the Universe into existence but can't preserve his Holy word through time, ofcourse God can 100% do this.
