  • This video will discuss where and how Coolant can be getting into your engine and possibly causing damage. Is it the Cylinder Head, Water Pump, Thermostats, some other unnamed part or just a mystery. Watch the video to find out.

    My buddy had the same problem, coolant in the crankcase. His was in a late nineties marine 3116. We checked all the usual suspects and the unusual as well. Wasn't looking good for avoiding removal from the boat and tearing it apart. Long story short, turns out in its past it had been rebuilt and sleeved. I believe the original block had cracked and was sleeved as a repair. Went for a hundreds of hours and about 10 years but eventually the sleeve cracked as well. Engine started and ran fine with just the slightest amount of white smoke that went away fairly quickly after the engine warmed up. It was low on the sleeve so the engine never hydro locked but after sitting for a while, as boats do, the coolant was low and there was red cat coolant in the oil. Just another possibility on this specific engine....
    Great videos!!!! I found them very informative and steered me in the right direction in this case.

    I had an old Isuzu I4 with a crack between an exhaust valve and the coolant system. It was actually forcing coolant out of the system entirely at speeds above ~55-60, so driving around normally didn't really do anything, but going on long highway trips was problematic.

    My truck was using 1/2 gallon of coolant everyday, couldn’t find the leak.
    Eventually I put pressure into the radiator and still couldn’t find my leak.
    Well the next morning my truck wouldn’t turn over it had locked up.
    Turned out to be inner cooler.
    With that added pressure for testing coolant it opened my leak more therefore
    leaking lots of coolant from the inner cooler into the cylinders overnight.

    dude, I've got a 86' 3204 with water in the oil. exactly 2 gallons. the machine was sitting through the winter, full of antifreeze in Georgia. it amazes me that i check the oil religiously, and all of a sudden, the dip stick registers 2 gallons high in oil and 2 gallons low on coolant. I am not a mechanic but, have a few mechanics leading me. I've taken the head off and pistons out and have pressurized the cooling system. I have found no leaks. other than the radiator. I've pressurized the system with ordinary water and have found rust around oil ports around the head gasket. I'm thinking this may be my problem. the head gasket but. have been told it could be the oil cooler or cracked block or head .

I used a mirror to check what cylinder was leaking it was number 1. The block had cavatation in the.o ring band. It could been fixed with balzona. The customer had it cut for an insert

    Had a c15 Acert the was blowing white smoke and eating coolant like it was going out of style. No external leak, no coolant In the oil pan and it failed a pressure test. Turned out to be the pre cooler in the air intake system had failed and was spraying coolant into the intake side of the engine. Not cheap but better than a complete tear down.

    • @AdeptApe
      @AdeptApe  Před 7 lety +1

    • @oilburner2012
      @oilburner2012 Před 7 lety

      Adept Ape when I pulled the intake pipe off the cooler was covered in rust. Turns out the owner was using raw water in the cooling system. The owner said water was cheaper than coolant, when the engine is eating coolant. I wound up replacing the pre cooler, coolant pump and oil cooler. Also an extensive cleaning of the cooling system.

    Massey Ferguson 255 I swapped the FI pump with a brand new one and the tractor is still not starting even though I used starting fluid on the air intake the tractor didnt even attempted to start.
    I also discovered when I took off the plate on the back of the chamber with the 4 bolts (I wish I could send you the picture I took) that there was an excessive amount of rust both on the plate and on the mounting part of the chamber where the pump connects/links with the three screws. The tractor just wont start and I have no idea what could have happened I thought just the FI pump would fix the problem but the issue seems to be bigger. Thank you!

    How about when there is coolant in the crankcase but no oil coming into the radiator? I've heard this could be caused by gavatation. When holes are formed in the front cover plate behind the water pump and coolant just runs into the oil. This happened on my 7.3. No sign what so ever oil coming back into the radiator. You can put coolant in the radiator and watch it flow out of the oil pan without it running.

    • @AdeptApe
      @AdeptApe  Před 6 lety +1

      +Neil Neil Well that's is not good. Could be a cracked head or blown head gasket most likely, where you have coolant getting by the seal to the closest port, the head bolt hole. Might be something smaller though, such as a water ferrule that has just hardened or cracked and is working its way to the bolt. The head should be removed though unfortunately to check.

I went ahead and replaced my coolant pump(gear driven), engine oil cooler, and thermostat since I already had top engine removed. Took my heads to machine shop for resurface and inspected for cracks, all good just needed new valves and got them replaced. Put everything back together according to the service manual and ran good for a couple of days though I did notice more than normal condensation on valve cover oil filler cap and coolant level going down slowly. Drained the oil and left it overnight with radiator full and oil drain plug removed. Checked in the morning and had coolant dripping from oil drain plug. I'm clueless to what my problem could be. Any help would be appreciated from anybody with similar experience. Thank you

      Adept Ape I'll look at the engine tomorrow I think it would be hard to find parts serial number or not that is a good good engine it might be need to be rebuilt one of these days but we don't put anywhere near a million miles on it we use it basically ones a year for harvest and then it pulles a spray trailer. Thanks for the reply
      Ps: if your engine is jerking a lot when it's not under load what might cause that?? Dose it happen to cat engines too??

    C-10 cat, would a bad water pump cause bubbles in the bottle on the over flow tube? I'm getting bubbles at idle. I pressurised the system at 20psi an it didnt seem to move for 30min. Driver was running hot because of a leak in the coolant tube going to the compressor.

      Oil in the coolant and coolant in the oil is usually indicative of a defective oil cooler. He briefly mentioned that issue in this video.

    hello sir, I would like to ask that there is water mixed in the oil pan. this is genset. what are the causes of this?tnx

  • @thinkingoutsidethegrid5625

    Any idea why coolant would be going directly into the crank case on a Cummins 4b? It happens after filling the coolant about half way and then will flow at about a 1/4" stream out of the oil drain pan plug. I recently changed the oil cooler housing because of a crack and pressure tested the cooler itself and it was fine. I've already removed the head and verified it's ok. Coolant begins flowing into the crank case before it reaches the head level. Input from anyone will be happily accepted😁.

    Josh, I got a c-15 that is getting opposite problem to this video, the oil is getting into the coolant tank and its a see thru tank that is all black from oil. I did change the oil cooler in 2012 and it fixed it then but now 300,000 km later, I have same problem just wondering do I change oil cooler again or is there something else I need to check ?
    Thanks and love the vids.

      +Clayton Holland If you have oil in your coolant that is pretty much always an oil cooler. If your transmission has a tranny cooler, that can also be the problem.

    Help , ASAP , We just rebuilt an ISX Cummins at the cost of $25000 (sleeves had to be shimmed) , 1 week after getting truck back the coolant is contaminating oil . The mechanic came to check truck and he said the problem is the OIL PUMP COOLER and that's not under his warranty . I am sure he is lying to us. he has us against the ropes . What is the best way to verify ?

    Adept Ape, will a CAT service center update or changed the "settings" of the ECM without the customer knowledge?

    • @AdeptApe
      @AdeptApe  Před 7 lety +1

      +Kenneth Bullins Not usually. If they are troubleshooting sometimes a configuration setting will get changed, but should be changed back before the vehicle leaves the shop. It is possible a new flash file was installed as well, but usually the customer is consulted first.
