Wonderful effect obtained so easily, it's awesome. Thanks you, Ma'm.
It's 2019 and this tutorial just helped me land an awesome project for package design. YOU ROCK!!
You Rock! Good luck with the project! This makes me so happy to hear, thank you for checking out my channel.
Véry excellente démonstration!!..Merci

Thank you for this tutorial.
In case another user has the same issue I did, I thought I'd put something about it here...(it was my mistake).
I couldn't get the symbols to map at first. I had preview turned on, but they just wouldn't show up. It took me a few tries googling, but I found out what was wrong.
I had to open my symbol back up, and choose Object, Stray Points. Then I had to delete the artifacts of that line I made to line up the dots with. When I'd originally deleted it, I must've left some anchors or something hanging out there. All stray points have to be gone for it to work.
Then I went back into the 3D, mapped the dots symbol, and voila, there it was!
Thx again for a great tutorial. :) I'm having a blast learning Illustrator this week.
OMG your so lovely, thank you for this great tutorial!!!!

wow............. nice tutorial................Boss..............
Create a 3D vortex shape in #Illustrator. It is fun and easier than it looks.
hey you are amazing thanks for you nice tutorial great job ;)
***** Thank you for stopping by my channel and thanks for your feedback!
Nice tutorial. Would it be possible to include in this video (or another one) a recreation of the vortex that is shown at the beginning? It is similar to the one that you created but I get more of an "I'm getting sucked into this vortex" feel from the initial image.
Morgan Field To change how the vortex looks change the triangle shape once you have made the 3D object and mapped the symbol to it. Making the face of the triangle bulge out instead of dip inwards will give you a different look.
Hey Helen I've got a problem with making geometric pattern mandalas, could you help me out by showing me how I can make this?
I would like to congratulate you on your style of presentation. I am thoroughly sick of "instructional" videos that consist of a mouse arrow flashing around the screen with a backing of poor quality rock music or ones that take twenty minutes to explain how to make a new document. Your matter of fact, no frills presentation suits me and once I have followed it I can then play to develop my own versions of your design. Well done.
This is great. I did it and looks fine, but I would like to do it more narrow like the picture of the one in blue you show, I wonder how to control that. Thanks a lot.
You can do it by adjusting the underlying shape. If you make it taller and thinner then it will be steeper. So, I suggest you open the Appearance panel, select the shape, turn off the 3D effect, adjust the shape and then enable the 3D effect again. You might need to edit the mapping when you have done this once you have adjusted the shape. I hope this helps?
Thank you for this. I'm having trouble, though, with the colors. Even though I told the non-dots color to be white, it's ended up being kind of a silvery color. I have no idea why. How can I control that better?
+Peter Bailey Ok, so a couple of things. First alter the fill of the original shape to white. Then go back to the 3D effect (double click on it in the Appearance panel) and click More Options. Some of the silvery color is the shading on the shape so you can either remove the shading or use the shading options to lighten the shape - Ambient light is one option that you can adjust - increase it to make the shape more white. Let me know if this solves your problem.
Quite nice. Why do you make the shape (8.40) in red in stead of gray and not a mirror image?
+Edward Roussou It's so long ago I don't remember why I chose red.. I do know I didn't do a mirror image because I wanted to show people how to solve the problem if they drew their shape the wrong way - so I did it to show that flipping it makes a big difference in the 3D result.
Can this same 3D effect be created using a line (swirl) instead of individual circles?
Yes it can. Make a set of horizontal lines and make sure they are evenly spaced. Then add them as a Symbol and apply them to the vortex. You'll just have to juggle the rotation to line up the lines so they look like they are spiraling in. It may take some practice and experimentation but it can be done.
how do you do this with the new version of illustrator, i dont see a map art option?
Great question Dylan. In the new version of Illustrator you need to select your starting shape and choose Effect - 3D and Materials - 3D (Classic) and follow the video from there. The old tools are still there in Illustrator and you should use them for this particular project. I actually think they are still very useful as alternative ways to do things and the resulting images work differently - don't discount them because they are "Classic"!
is there anyone that has already made the 3D vortex black and white spiral and for sale
Did you want to buy it? Or make and sell it? It's fine for you to make and sell it!
thanks Helen! really useful
Awesome to hear.
