Yes, it is very true about ensuring that your proprietary software works on the Linux version which you are about to upgrade.
For example, back in the day, I purchased Maple 8 professional. This worked on a few different operating systems. At that time there was a brilliant Linux distribution SuSE Linux 8 Professional which had a very good user graphical interface, there was also an upgrade CD which I purchased for some features for SuSE Linux 8 Pro. Maple 8 worked brilliantly on SuSE Linux 8, but for it to work on SuSE Linux 9 one would have to purchase Maple 9 which would incorporate any new changes of SUSE Linux 9, for example. A large company may well be able to afford purchasing a new distribution of Maple. But if one has a family to support ... one may decide to keep one's reliable old computer as a dedicated system until one can afford to purchase the new software taking a holistic view. Back then, one only needed to type in the serial number and the software worked, it is more difficult today, with most software needing to be initialised by the software company; this can make things quite difficult when software companies are bought out or fail.

The more stripped version you are talking about I assume is "L"ubuntu and not "K"ubuntu . L stands for LXDE which is focused on being a lightweight DE . K stands KDE , that is actually more about aesthetics and their own set of softwares .

19:00 "you run up against this in the real world, where the code you are using simply won't run on a newer version (...)"
Ran into this wall recently. A rather important application crashes constantly on the latest Windows build. Very frustrating

You can't really take a version that is five versions back because it's probably not maintained anymore. What people too when they realize that this thing does not run the latest ubuntu with the fancy desktop they take the latest version of Xubuntu or Lubuntu wich is the newest version of Ubuntu but with a much lighter desktop that only takes about 100-200 mb of ram.

hey there eli ;] dont know if your use of kali as an example in this episode is representative m yes its a distro of wich there are several versions that are all debian based fork of gnu ,,way to technical for my liking lol and having said that it dosnt quite fit into that category either as it was created and designed specifically for PENETRATION TESTING which you casually refer to as "hacking" i have issues with that but wont go into them here or now lol so kali sits in a strange hole to pigeon as it isnt secure on purpose to allow it to operate as it needs to operate . it isnt designed to be used by a non advanced computer user regardless of operating system allowing any user knowledgeable or otherwise the ability to make changes ...possibly terminal to the os . also kali /ubuntu are functionally almost identical but someone only experienced in ubuntu will be at a disadvantage with that prior knowledge.. or at least this is my take on my journey into linux and kali among other distros

When talk about client side OS , majority of peoples using windows 10 as a client OS. If we install Linux as a Server how to convert clients/users to Linux , no one can quickly understand Linux OS Interface. Is Linux Servers can support Windows 10 as a Client OS ?
