I'm think that the song is about how certain psychological medications can practically erase your personality. You can still walk, speak, and think, but it's as if you don't feel present. Further, I think he speaks to becoming reliant on these meds, not by being addicted, but from fear of being even worse without them. Just my thoughts. Great reaction btw
You'd think that any artist/performer who tries jumping from genre to genre may find themselves spread a little thin somewhere within such a challenge? Perhaps a tad ambitious even? Apparently not if you're Ren Gill. Not only does he shift gears seamlessly, he frigging stretches boundries and raises the bar like he's the Grandmaster creator in all of them. Even manages to create a few of his own. He doesn't believe in fillers. There's nothing mediocre to be found anywhere. He connects with everyone on one level or another. It feels personal, like he knows us better than we do. Ren creates a safe space then holds up a mirror for us to face the things we find too difficult to face alone. The world is already a better place knowing Ren is in it. He's suffered alot for the gifts we're receiving and I hope he's feeling groundswell of love that's heading fast in his direction. He's earned it and then some.

@@CateB66 Hey there Cate, I've just gone back to recall our previous conversation and saw that I hadn't replied back to you. Starting with the UK it sounds like you made the most of your time there. I too stayed a lot longer than I'd initially planned, 1997 to 2004 and yes I'm back here in Oz living just outside of Ballarat. The Dead Poet in Edinburgh sounds familiar but I can't be sure if I've been there. Was it in the old or new town? I frequented many a pub whilst living there as you do, but for some reason my recall is a little foggy when it comes to details..... Where abouts on this big chunk of land we call home do you reside Cate?

Unfortunately it closed permanently, not when I was there but still, was a huge shame. It was such a great venue. I moved home in 97. I’m from Brissy but decided to move to WA for 4 years when I got back so essentially gone from home for 10 but now home and settled back in Brissy.

Was in the Royal Mile Backpackers until I could afford a flat share a little further out. Worked up in Perthshire as well. St Fillans on Loch Earn. Was stunning. My sister is up in Brissy. She's been a QLDer for over 20 years. I've got family in Cairns and lived up there for a few years mid 90's. Fly in fly out to just north of Cloncurry. Was an interesting experience. I'm out of town these days surrounded by nature with my closest neighbour about a kilometer away. Me, the menagerie, wildlife and the trees. Love it here
I have been watching Ren performing live for seven years and know how amazing his voice is but Chalk Outlines is my favourite of all his songs. Not only is it hauntingly beautiful but it is also encouraging other people to examine and share their own mental health issues.
Notice he has used the acoustics of the rooms in Hi Ren, Violets tale, and this. He kinda points it out in Violets tale when he looks up the spiral staircase and sings into it.
He’s a poetic genius. So few lines and yet it has such an impact. Most of his in the feels type songs are worded in ways that are open to interpretation, which I think is why so many people can relate to them.
I enjoyed this reaction. He and Chinchilla perform a song called 'I've forgotten how to be me' there are two versions, an animated vid and a live vid. either is worth a watch.

Watch his face at the beginning, he making out that he is making the song up in the moment, a sketch if you will, the notes of the guitar are full of space. The opening of the chair that hurt your ears, echos around the room like it does in an empty space. All metaphors for what the Chalk Outlines represent. He uses the space to produce the reverberations from the walls, which build until Chinchilla also emerges from the walls singing a touch behind Ren to add another echo building further to the climax when Chinchilla fades back into the wall/darknes with one last echo. Chinchilla lines add nothing new to the story that Ren hasn't already said, but repeat like an echo.
Love your reactions and this one seemed to captivate you. It took me a few listens to let the message sink in. Chalk outlines is a perfect metaphor for so many things. I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis about 10 years ago. It's been quite prgressive and destructive. I've been walking in and out (mostly in) of chalk outlines for the duration. Ren's music has touched my soul.
I love that you’ve embraced Ren, reacting to his work and of course Chinchilla, an amazing singer with a beautifully powerful voice. Another: His long friendship/partnership with Sam Tompkins, who he busks with on the streets of Brighton both before and after lockdown, another great partnership. Some of his individual work: Genesis, I Shot the Sheriff, Wildfire, The Hunger, Losing It, to name but a mere fraction. All greats. Then more with Chinchilla: One Dance/Drunk in Love. Chalk is about the angst of anxiety and MH, feeling dead inside but still alive…..I could go on……. But I won’t 😌 Oh, but I did love your reaction when he began to actually sing. Could see it was a nice surprise as so many think he’s only a creative ‘busker’ only.
Seeing him with Bibi when first recorded in 2015 or 16, he’s soooo young in that with this sweet little baby face of his but agree, another great. He’s a musical thespian.

A good place to look for more of Ren's singing is the band "the Big Push". Lots of live Busking (street performing) videos. I personally see this song as a condemnation of the current medical system. All they seem to know how to do is push Drugs. So you "live", you walk around with a fake smile, and yet inside you feel DEAD...because you feel Nothing at all.

The Big Push actually plays on the streets of Brighton. I don't mean to niggle, it's just that Brighton has a lively busking scene.

This one tears me apart every time, but it is so beautiful. The echo in that hallway is so perfect and organic.

“Walking around in these chalk outlines” to me suggests the emptiness from the reliance on medication. You become an outline of what you actually are.
