    "Honky Kong!" or "White Apes Can't Hump"

    This is a classic. The director at the time had said that there was another level to the movie, the actors aren't just playing their character, but he had given them backstories of the era appropriate fictional actors that they are pretending to be doing the movie. That included his direction, I think he said the director had a drug problem, and owed money so had to do the movie. So some are playing like they were an ex-football player turned actor, the brother I believe is playing a Juilliard trained actor, and other specific non-actors.
    My favourite joke is when the guy gets hit "for real" and they seem to have cut around the fight that happened and the actor has been obviously replaced.

    The boom mic hanging in the shots, “actors” reading stage directions, people that got beat reappearing just to get beat up again, randomly wrong cars spliced in the car chase scene and crashes.

    I do think seeing some of the 70s blaxsploitation films this is riffing on would help. Shaft is probably the most coherent film of the era, but Dolomite, Superfly, Coffee, and Black Belt Jones are all pretty great. It was a fascinating time period of independent black film makers making movies about their world not one through an outsider's lens. They were shot on the super cheap and often the acting and script might leave something for a critical eye, but they 100% genuine. Moreso than many weird or quirky films discussed today they have a kind of honesty that I loved seeing as a kid when I first saw them. Unashamed of what they were.

    This movie is so accurate in its parody of Blaxploitation movies. The more of them you see, the funnier BD becomes. For example in the movie WIllie Dynamite, there is literally a meeting of pimps where they discuss "the game." It's hilarious in its own right because it's played completely serious but it's absurd. If I have one complaint about BD I think it kind of falls apart at the end when he's fighting in the White House; it feels like a TV sketch and most of these blaxploitation movies start and end at street level-- more grounded in reality.

  • @The_Texorcist
    @The_Texorcist Před 2 lety +2

    Black Dynamite is one of my favorite comedies. Many people say it’s a parody or that it lampoons the Blaxploitation genre. To me it’s more than just simple parody. With movies like Airplane or Naked Gun they took a genre and went over the top to show the lunacy of their perspective genre. With Black Dynamite there was a sense of verisimilitude. They didn’t take a genre film and add a ton of humor or lunacy onto it, they took a genre and in earnest highlighted many funny flaws within many movies in that genre.
    It was common to see the boom arm in many of those movies, they did hire theater trained actors to play parts in those movies (why Black Dynamites brother sounded like he was from a Shakespeare play), actors readings screen direction etc etc etc. They took what was already there and just packed all those existing genre stereotypes into the movie. There was a level of care and reverence for the material that I think sets it apart from other parodies or spoofs.
    For this reason I think it stands up with Superfly, Foxy Brown, Dolemite, Coffy, Shaft, Cleopatra Jones etc.

    One of the funniest films Ive ever seen. Spent about a decade watching every Kungfu and Samurai film I could find from the 70's-90s and saw a few Rudy Ray Moore movies. This film is the best Spoof of the Genre I have ever seen.

    Love this film, and can never recommend it highly enough. Not only is it a great parody of blaxploitation films, but a brilliant homage to Rudy Ray Moore. The whole cast and crew did a great job, and looking forward to see their next project, The Outlaw Johnny Black, which has been released in the US, but still waiting for it to come to my country.

    That was Arsenio Hall who says, "Order, Ni**a!". The guy who says "I sell drugs to the community" was on Reno 911. Tommy Davidson from the crazy great sketch comedy show In Living Color as Cream Corn. This movie's cast is low key great! But, they can easily make a sequel off of the comic book/graphic novel they put out aptly titled, "Black Dynamite: Escape from Slave Island". (BTW, can you tell that I love this damn movie!)

    Also, I don't know if you take CZcams suggestions to put into the Patreon polls, but I would suggest Ali: Fears Eats The Soul (1974). It's a film from Germany and beautifully done. Although the subject matter can be touchy. (Racism and stuff).

    There is actually a slightly different cut of the film (from what I can gather it was the original cut that played at Sundance) that was actually the first version I ever saw. A different montage during 'Cleaning Up The Streets', a different take on the "worst physical year ever!" line, they don't put down Gunsmoke, etc. For my money it's a (slightly) better version, and if you're lucky you might find it on torrent sites (as a DVD rip), but since we're talking from 12 years ago now, it's not likely.

  • @jamesoblivion

    This is a perfect parody. Especially because they shot it on 16mm color reversal stock. Nowadays, you expect a parody or homage film to be shot digitally and maybe post processed for a filmic look. But the coarse grain, harsh contrast, and garish colors of the 1970s' preferred low budget film stock really bake in so much of the period authenticity.
    There's also the meta level to the humor. Maybe my favorite gag in the whole movie is when the one militant dude is saying all his stage direction out loud, and at first, MJW - in character not as Black Dynamite, but as the running back turned actor *playing* Black Dynamite - looks confused at first, but tries to keep it going...but as the dude keeps saying the stage directions, he looks off camera, like he's waiting for the director to yell cut. The look on his face is just pure 'Are you seein this shit? Are we seriously not doing another take?' It kills me every time. 😂
