The First Ancient Kings of England

- This Video will cover the lives of King Alfred the Great, King Edward the Elder and Æthelstan. Over 3 generations, these legendary Kings would unify the divided land of England. England was made from 4 major Kingdoms, Mercia, Wessex, Northumbria and East Anglia. During Alfred's life the Great Heathen army led the sons of Ragnar Lodbrok had overran all of these kingdoms except Wessex which alone was resisting. War and fate would lead Alfred to sit the throne. He would bring the Vikings to heel and would restore his Kingdom to greatness.
His son Edward the Elder's life was one of military expansion, further conquering lands to the north that had been taken by the vikings during the invasion of the great army. Edward would eliminate many Viking Kings that had crowned themselves Kings in the lands they had taken. He would gain overlordship over East Anglia and Mercia.
His son Æthelstan would dream of being the master of Britain, and would become the first overlord of all of England and Scotland. However, his vassals would grow wary of his overlordship and would fight him in the Battle of Brunanburh. Æthelstan won the battle, but lost control of Scotland, with the end of his territory being the border dividing Scotland and Northumbria. In just 3 generations, the line of Alfred took all of England.

My Dad was a history teacher, absolutely loved English history - would get genuinely teary eyed when discussing Saxon England
Awww that’s so beautiful!!! My ode to him. My two history teachers in middle school really created that spark that grew into love for *history*
Que tipazo
I hope you enjoyed the video! Anglo Saxon England is by far my favourite in English history! A lot of research went into the video! I hope you enjoyed it!
@@historyprofiles Thank you - keep up the amazing work 🙏🏻❤🍻
Bit strange to cry about that 😂😂😂
Alfred and his grandson Athelstan were legends.
Complete legends whose names are still celebrated
And don't forget Æthelflæd, Lady of the Mercians!
So was Edward...you should read historical accounts more
@@CW-rx2js I did say Edward’s rule was more glorious than his fathers in terms of accomplishment and he is often overlooked in history
@@CW-rx2js But not as great as his father and son.
Alfred wasn’t only great king he raised his children well
Finally!!! The kings that came after Alfred!!!
Yes! His bloodline that United England!!
@@historyprofiles indeed! Makes me wonder what would have happened if the House of Wessex had continued instead of the Plantagenets.
@@historyprofiles have you done a video of the kings before Alfred? If so could you post the link on this comment please!
@@WhiteDawn. m.czcams.com/video/9Onmoz7CIuY/video.html
Brilliant documentary & superbly researched. Totally interesting & informative & well narrated. Greatly enjoyed. Very many thanks.
Thank you so much! Anything to shed light on Alfred and his bloodline!
It is so weird to me that everyone has heard of Alfred, yet his daughter Aethelflaed, who in my opinion did much more for england in her short reign in Mercia, is almost unknown nowadays.
I only heard of her last week! A strong and determined woman. 👸
They usually suppress women's contributions in history! Love reading about famous queens like Eleanor of Aquitane! I didn't realize when I was naming my three daughters that I gave them all historical names of ancient queens! My granddaughters also bear names of queens and famous female characters from novels.
Oh shit, here comes the woke brigade.
@@frankbarron1907uh oh, Frank’s getting nervous that these women are getting uppity
@SueDeegan8827 Lmfao! It never ceases to astonish me how ignorant some people can be.
Do you how many great men in their own time have been completely forgotten by history? How many great women?
There is no conspiracy against women, or anyone else for that matter, there is only the luck of the draw.
Someone writes a compelling historical book, or some events become mythologized for some inexplicable reasons, and voila! A person becomes part of the discursive historical canon.
If there was a conspiracy against women, Catherine the Great wouldn’t be called Great. Queen Elizabeth wouldn’t have great ships named after her. Ferdinand and Isabella would only be Ferdinand.
I have a degree in history from the University of California. Historical texts are replete with the contributions and accomplishments of great women. But moronic leftists - in their unending drive to divide people - pretend that the West is somehow singularly historically repressive against women. Please give me a break.
The historical fact is that Western men championed the rights of women, otherwise - without the support of men - Western women would’ve never achieved equality under the law.
But please, keep crying into your pillows at night and pretend at being victims of an oppressive system. After all, people far greater than you suffered real hardship and toiled against insurmountable odds for you to be able to play make believe.
Absolutely magnificent 😍 Wonderful work and craftsmanship and such interesting history!
Glad you enjoyed it!
This is great and top quality! Thank you for your hard work on it, I really enjoy learning about history!❤
Anything to shed some light on the ancient Anglo-Saxon kings of old!
This is the best documentary on this subject that I've heard yet.
Thank you so much it really means a lot! I tried to fit everything in there!
Alfred, what luck that the country had him (amazing being the fifth son). Aethelflaed was really the one "closing the deal". She should have lived for five more years... 😢
His story is incredible! From 5th son to king, to his grandson becoming the kind of England! But yes Aethelflaed and Edward sure did expand much of his fathers empire though the sword! I hope you enjoyed the video!!
Extraordinary to have these photos. They don't look so different from us today. But, I guess they shouldn't. Thanks so much.
Are you completely stupid?

Spot on once again, Ollie. Thank you.
Thank you so much for watching Jared!
This is a great historical piece. Not usually known other than Alfred, your in depth history of his descendants is fantastic. Alfre
Alfred was my 34x Great Grandfather, as Sitryggur Olavsson II Silken Beard, was my 30x Great Grandfather, being Grandson of Alfred's Granddaughter, Aedgithu (Edith) of Wessex, who married my 32x Great Grandfather Sitryggur Ceach, King of Dublin and Jorvik. Thank you for the in depth information about my Ancestors which helps me very much. Ivor (The Boneless) was known in Ireland as Imar, King of Dublin. It is his Clann which I belong, the Ui Imaragh, or Kinsmen of Imar (Ivor). His line descended directly to Sitryggur Olavsson II (Silken Beard) King of Dublin 999-1022 and High King of Ireland 1022-1036 (Abd), who gave us our current Surname, originally "Scirloc" in Gadeolic, pronounced "Sherlock", meaning "Fine Haired", referring the the Viking name of Sitryggur, Silken Beard ". We have one of the oldest Irish names, next to Collins, Doyle and Aedh. The name of Collins, or Ui Cullean," The Holy People ", descended from the Druids, Doyle, or" Ui Doualle,", or" Dark Ones ", and Aedh, or" Hughes ", being Dal Riata. Sitryggur had a Great Granddaughter, who married Hwell Dda, King of Gwynedd.
Thank you! I appreciate it a lot! That’s incredible! I couldn’t think of anything better than having Alfred and ivars blood running through my veins! I also have other videos on the UI Imair if you want to check those out! I go in depth into ivars line !
Thats was awesome bro, thank you for sharing❤
Hwel Dda, King of Gwynedd, had a descendant, Rhys ap Tewdwr, King of Deheubarth d1093, who's line descends to Henry Tudor, Earl of Richmond, later King Henry VII. I have traced the Tudor line back through Brutus, Duke of Cambria and Cornwall, through Apius of Alba (Rome) down to Troyus, King of Troy 1420BC. My family line from my Grandfather's Grandmother, who was a Sephardic Jew from Naples, traces directly through Anna of Aramathia and Joseph of Aramathia, back to King David of Israel. My Father had David's Blood, AB-. Our line is of the Grail line, and we have the Grail Emblem as our Coat of Arms, as Henry V of France, the Flur De Lis. The Holy Grail is not a Cup, but the knowledge of the Royal Blood of the line of King David. This continues from Yeheshua and Mary Magdelaine, his wife through their Daughter Sarah, and the Knowledge was kept by the Knights Templar, at the Priory of Sion. I have a Web page called Blood of the Rose, with reference to the Red and white Roses of the Royal Line of Lancashire and Yorkshire, and the Tudor Rose of the combined Royal Lines into the now current line. I am also a Priest. So I have the blood of King Imar, Sitryggur, Alfred, Hwell Dda, Rhys ap Tewdwr, The Tudor Kings and Queens and King David of Israel running though my veins. I always wear a ring with the Symbol of the Knight Templar, as a memorial to my Ancestors. My 8x Great Grandfather, Dr William Sherlock DD was Dean of St. Paul's Cathedral 1691-1707, and also Chaplain to King William III and Grand Master of the Temple.
PS, I'm Lord Ralph L Sherlock (Author)
I feel like a peasant now pal 😅

Thank you so much for watching! I’m glad you enjoyed the lives of Englands most incredible Saxon kings!
Great to see this era getting some attention. So much English history starts at 1066. I loved the Last Kingdom in the first season, but hated it by the last. I thought it really did the Anglo-Saxons a disservice.
I know, we need to learn the history of our island before the Norman conquest; I personally love the history of the Anglo Saxon kings! Especially the line of Alfred and how they United a land! It’s sad how their their line came to and end though
Outstanding made
Thank you so much!!!!

Amazing
I loved this documentary! Can you please tell me the incredible music you used..? When I wrote this, it was at/around the 29:02 mark, but I’ve heard it repeated throughout. A beautiful, haunting female choir… I can’t say enough positive things about this documentary! Great work!
What a tangled web we do weave.Life was so complicated in those days They all killed each other for power and control. They didn't have tight family ties, they just killed their own family members to sit on a throne...😵😵😵😵😱😱
Power will do that to most men, happens in nearly every culture world wide. Aethelstan was particularly savage though
It's scary what some people are willing to do for power. It isn't just ancient times. The current British throne is in danger right now.
Long live z King Charles III
Can you tell me what show or movie are the screenshots from? Thank you
Nice
I think this piece was really well done. I really like the clips you've used. A little more energy in your voice would have made it better. But it was well done. Where'd you get your clips?
Thank you for the feedback! A lot of the images are ai generated also have some scenic shots from pixbay and pexels
Love the videos and ways the images bring to life so many figures of history. Can you have the AI generate more period-accurate castles??
Thank you so much! The ai is so tempromental! And sometimes takes so many generations for an ok looking fortification, as ai improves the more accurate buildings and people will be shown, apologies for that
So GOOD..I enjoyed learning...Like to think l have SOME DNA AngloSaxon within me !! And many of us for sure, Thank You.
King Alfred the great was born in July. 👑💍🇬🇧
Alfred the great, my 35th maternal GGF ❤

@@historyprofiles my grandma always talked about her family .she was 90 so my sister did a DNA test .came back we are 3rd cousins 15 times removed. The Howard's are the great grand parents .we both have paperwork . It's fun to know .now I study those times .
@stevemellin5806 do you get a pension or something 😊?
No I don't get anything. It's fun to know this . Haven't been to england. i probably would not get anything from it .
I new most of this story to the story of Vikings
Are the photos shown during this video been enhanced? Surely they didn't have colour photography in thiose days.
AI imagery
I'd like to know where the images are from?
there are generated by ai
Really enjoyed this documentary! Can i ask if the photos were AI or from a movie?
They seem to be a combination of both...AI generated images with The Last Kingdom and Vikings imagery used as base photos that have been manipulated.
My grandpa's name was Charles Alfred Ragsdale.
What is the show used for the imagery? Handsome men, but unfortunately inaccurate armor.
They're never gonna understand the simple yet, profound truth...
"Life is fleeting"...☠️ Only God is eternal.... He exists and keeps order in the universe.... No one can hide the truth from The Lord!!!
Destiny is all ❤
The Last Kingdom❤
What about King Dudley the Diddler, from glastonbury
EthylFred then declared war on LucyRicky over control of the Isle of Lucy.
My family, langenfeld was granted land in the 11th century, I'd like to find out more about who they were
My lamoureaux family also had land and an island I believe
The Last Kingdom! Yes.
I'm 90% sure most if not all of the stills in this are AI generated still a great and informative video regardless
They are, unfortunately there no surviving images, paintings, or drawings of many viking and Saxon kings from that time
So handsome and fashionable. Did they actually fight or have a runway off.
What about pre-Alfred?
I have a video on his grandfather Ecgbert and his father Aethelwulf! Be sure to check them out !
I'm thinking more of earlier, such as 400 AD,@@historyprofiles
Does anybody know about the chieftains in England that had their own territories before the ancient kings and before the Romans came
Ælfred is my 32nd great grandfather
😊 that's amazing if anyone can really trace their heritage back so far in time!
The monotone narration and music are really off putting. Shame because I would have liked to listened for more than 3 minutes. Couldn't bare it anymore than that.
The voice is excellent and very clear even when sped up to 1.5x that might help you.
My Ancestors
This is a very interesting topic, and I was really looking forward to the video.
But I simply had to give up listening. Because to me the reading was very "flat". For a while I was sure it was an AI reading. Almost no pauses, little intonation, no feelings. My attention just kept drifting off.
This is said with the deepest respect for the work, that has obviously been put into it. I just think there is room for a little improvement.
It’s not ai reading it, it’s myself, you can tell it’s not AI due to mouth noises and some breathing noises. I hope you enjoyed the content but I understand my voice is not everyone’s cup of tea
I like your narration voice very much. It is deep, soothing and has that aristocratic British accent.
This sounds a lot more like a summary of the last Kingdom, I have listened to other documentaries and they differ from this one, kind of confused
How so? The events listed are what happened in history all of the sources are in the description, what’s confused you?
The last kingdom is about these 3 kings lol
AI having trouble with eyes still I see lol
Dang ! Who was King James the 1st of England ?
Son of Mary Queen of scots
@qua4836 - he was also James VI of Scotland
Avid Gardner was not mentioned in the Comments. However, Avid Gardner and Wally are in league with each other and Wally has again been taken down by UTube.
Less than 200 years after Alfred's victory over the Danes, England would be conquered, the English way of life destroyed, and the English language changed forever by the Normans (viking descendants). William I (The Conqueror) of England would begin his reign.
Very true and sad
I enjoyed this video however....
ancestors were from kent origin- ussery or usary
Indeed! The ancestors of Alfred’s grandfather Ecgberht were the kings of Kent! Alfred’s own father Aethelwulf ruled as king of Kent before he ascended to the throne of Wessex after his fathers death!!
Alfred was born in Wantage not Wanting ! Can you not get that right ?
Copyrighted pictures from tv
Which ones
can't you see these are AI generated?
That was just too much. Too much drama. All this history needs is an army of Orcs thrown in .🙄🙄 glad those days are long gone.....🙄🙄😣😣
A bit dishonest th have Alfred and Edward as king of england.
They were kings of anglo-saxons (that means only those under their rule and not the danes rule).
Athelstan was the first king of england as king of english started in 927 and because he ruled all england, not Wessex like his grandfather and Edward had not Northumbria.
I put them in the video as they began the expansion of England, with aethelstan finally finishing it, I get your point though
Those damn trouble making Vikings . Heathens 😡😡😠😠😈👿😈😠😡
but the letter j is only 500 years old?
Too many ads
Noted, I am sorry for that. How many ads would you expect to see out if a video this length to improve the channel? Anyway I hope you enjoyed the content!
An argument can be made that the first king of England was actually the first king of Wessex since that was the only Anglo Saxon kingdom that survived the Nordic invasions.
Sorry dude. This comment might feel kinda trollish but I'm not in the business of kissin @sses. I can see that you've done tons of work on this vid and I give you props for that. I couldn't come close to what you have done here. This is the opinion of an unskilled viewer. I had to stop at 26:00 mins cuz I couldn't take it anymore. You've "droned on" thru some of the most significant historical moments of the British Isles. Alfred changing his socks seems to have the same significance as defeating some of the most notorious Viking warriors to have ever existed! If numbers stations were still a thing you would be the top prospect! I'm sorry for being an @ss because I can see you've worked hard... but it's true.
Thank you for watching! I understand your point I hope you enjoyed other elements of the video, there was so much to cover and I tried to cover all major battles as well as I could! Thank you for the feedback
The narrator sounds English 🏴 BUT EI the pronunciation of place names Berkshire , Mulberry the English would never say it like this or maybe he’s using olde English??
They were right Uthred would not be written about nor remembered 😂
Uhtred is well documented but he lived a couple of hundred years later
Enough with the loud music - PLEASE
Alfred was not a king of England he was a king of Wessex! Bit of a difference there.
I include him in the video as he was the pioneer and was king of the Anglo Saxons, without his blueprint Edward would not have expanded the kingdom and aethelstan wouldn’t have conquered with such ease
Strathclyde was not Pictish, It was a Brittonic Kingdom called Ystrad Clud, later invaded by the Gaelic speaking Scotti of Ireland and thus renamed Strathclyde, this is the origin of the Scots.
I don’t think showing a background of Norman architecture is a great idea for a video on the Late Saxon period.
I feel like that title is just... *so* misleading. Y'know, like... medieval kings weren't ancient.
I prefer these kings of England, as they are mush tuffer, has warrior like. This represents the true Anglo-Saxon spirit that some of us in England still have, and also why did stop using these Anglo-Saxon names in monarchy anymore, ever since william the names of the monarchy is just French names with a different spelling
Brutus and the line of his descendants including both Arthur's were the first kings before the Anlgo Saxons - Brutus came in 500BC and before that, Albine in 1500BC. This is suppressed history to legitimize kings/current power structure during the 1700s to present. Most history is hidden/untrue.
@Tom Wolf
was Albine 1500 AD a Ligurian ? Ligurians, a preindoeuropean ethnia that survived the last würmian glaciation (15.000 8000 AD), have repopulated nordeast Europe, and are cited having settled in the British isles. From those Ligurians comes the word Albion .Alba appears frequently in the chronicles and in toponyms.
Alba Longa, near Rome, was founded ~ 1050 AD.
The same Ligurians were intrepid navigators and have discovered amber on the shores of the Baltic. They were the firsth to elaborate it to make jewels ( Liguria denotes jewels out of amber )they commerced with the Minoans, the Myceneans,Mesopotamia, Egypt, the Cyclades. This monopol of amber has originated the " general name of their whole nation" (Plutrach, Vita Gaii Marii)
dot
Lol technically it isn't ancient because it's not before AD 1
Not ancient!
its so weird to have you speaking about history but the images tell a fantasy saga, à la King arthur made in Hollywood... I would love to have you using better AI.-commands to generate this images.... why not adding the term" historic accurate armor or clothing" ? these Leatherbandits are no vikings and there were certainly no platemail in this timeperiod... it breaks the great immersion you actually archive through out the stories... I generally love the content you do, but the images always break the immersion to me...
It is clear that all the comments on top here are from friends of the narrator as they praise him when in fact it is one of the worse narrations I have ever heard. No attempt at use of punctuation is used, not even a slight pause at full stops etc. Just rolling on and on in an awful monotone which when deviated from, is done by emphasising the wrong words. Hopeless.
Whats up with the stupid music. Sheesh.
Nah. They're not ancient, they're mediaeval - get it right.
