I remember when he got ousted from Star in a Million (when it was still a segment in ASAP) I turned to my cousin and said "sayang". Then he won the wild card round allowing him to compete again eventually winning the contest.
I understood the backlash that he received when he won because Sheryn Regis ate that competition and everybody (including my cousin) wanted her to win..... until the Grand Finals when she got so fixated with “technique” she decided to sing Wendy Moten's Come in Out of the Rain for her FINAL FUCKING SONG.
Over the years people had doubts about Erik's longevity. But this is why I have always rooted for him, instead of being consumed by it- he studied the craft, he made himself better, educated himself about the business, and slowly but surely elevated his career.
When you watch videos like this, you don't mind the missed technicalities in his version, because Erik was never the best singer ( who is? ) but just like the legends that came before him (Basil, Regine, Rey, Dulce) HE KNOWS HOW TO TELL A STORY.
Ryan Cayabyab wrote this song for Basil Valdez but I think Songbird has the best version. This one is a close second- pure eargasm!
