Litter in the outdoors poses a threat to wildlife who may ingest the trash we leave behind. When litter breaks down it leeches chemicals into the surrounding environment, which negatively impacts nearby vegetation and could contaminate water sources. Even trash that is sometimes considered "natural or biodegradable" like banana peels, orange peels, and apple cores can be harmful to wildlife. Trash also creates a negative visitor experience for many of us.

I'm an outdoor educator in Maine, and I spend a lot of time thinking about the LNT practice. I appreciate what pack it in, pack it out stands for, and do think it is an important practice to keep our natural places clean. That being sai, I would love to see some more thought put into what happens when that waste is brought back to the front country. In my work and my community, I see many people bundling compostable, recyclable, and trash waste in the same bag as the bring it back from their wilderness travel. In many of those situations if it isn't sorted initially it never does get sorted, and that trash is sent from our back yards, into the backyards of poorer communities. That trash ends up in landfills, and on the beaches of those who don't have the option, or knowhow to live elswhere. We need to responsibly sort our packed out waste, so that we can keep as much of it out of the landfill as possible. I think that the LNT Center For Outdoor Ethics should lead the charge on this. You all already have a broad reach, and a connection to those who care, as well as the teachers like myself in the outdoor industry. I hope you folks include this thought about the broader community, and trash's impact on more than just our, the privileged peoples, spaces.

Are you throwing those banana and orange peels out in the desert? Because that is a bold-faced lie that they don't break down within a month.
