  • We hear a lot about blockchain technology in the fintech space but what about it's use in a healthcare environment? In this week's video I'll go over some of the initial use cases for introducing blockchain technology to our health IT ecosystems.
    Industry examples:
    Patient health records:
    Guardtime - guardtime.com/about
    Pharmaceutical track and trace:
    Mediledger - www.mediledger.com
    Farmatrust - www.farmatrust.com
    Healthcare credentialing data
    ProCredEx - procredex.com
    Human Genome Sequencing
    Nebula - nebula.org

I have been looking into this topic for a little while now, seen large podcasts and such, this is honestly the best video I have found by far, thank you. Do you by chance know of any recent developments? Full disclosure, I am very interested with how blockchain tech can be applied in general, and BEYOND frustrated with health insurance, costs etc.

Thank you! Unfortunately you are not alone and there are many who share your frustrations with healthcare costs and insurance. From a blockchain perspective, most projects I come across in the care delivery space are still just smaller scale pilot initiatives. If I come across any exciting ones, I'll be sure to add them to the comments.

Great video! Would you be able to share which companies/teams have you come across that is looking into clinical trials using blockchain? Thank you!

Thank you. I think there are quite a few that are working in pilot phase right now but the first one that I heard about was IBM and Boehringer Ingelheim when they announced at the HIMSS conference a few years ago that they were launching a project to look into leveraging blockchain for clinical trials in Canada. Merck and Biogen also have some clinical trial work they are doing in various markets using the technology.

This is really a good video, I think the best part is how you explained blockchain in a simple sentence, however, I would like to correct a common mistake; blockchain data/ledger should not be called distributed, the correct word is "shared". In distributed computing when we talk about storage it means, data is split across multiple physical servers, in other words only portion of data is available per node. In the context of blockchain, every node contains the entire ledger not the piece of information. That is exactly why, calling blockchain a distributed ledger is incorrect. Some blockchains support shards which is probably the closest thing to distributed ledger.

Thank you for taking the time to provide such a well articulated comment. Blockchain is an area that a number of health IT professionals (including myself) are always seeking to better understand. Your explanation of the difference between the terms distributed and shared is very helpful.

Blockchains are typically managed by a peer-to-peer network for use as a publicly * distributed ledger*, where nodes collectively adhere to a protocol to communicate and validate new blocks.

@@d0cn0tes distributed ledger is essentially shared. "Distributed" has a completely different meaning in computer science.

The use of blockchain technologies still requires very robust and comprehensive privacy and security practices for health organizations. It will not be a replacement for strong processes and policies, but rather another technology tool that can be leveraged.
