Growing Conventional and Hybrid Rice in Southern Arkansas
A Eagles view of what it looks like Harvesting down in the south.
Arkansas Rice Facts
Arkansas is the #1 producer of rice in the United States.
In 2015, Arkansas farmers produced 207,550,200 bushels of rice on 1.286 million acres. That accounted for 49 percent of all the rice produced in the United States. Farmers in Texas, California, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Missouri account for most of the rest.
In 1904 William Fuller became one of the first farmers to grow rice successfully on his farm in Arkansas. By 1910 rice production, research and milling were established in the state.
Each year Arkansas farmers plant an average of 1.3 million acres of rice and harvest over 200 million bushels on 2,752 farms.
Arkansas farmers produce more than 9 billion pounds of rice each year.
Rice is the state’s second-highest-value commodity and its top agricultural export.
The annual Arkansas rice crop contributes billions to the state’s economy and and accounts for approximately 25,000 jobs, crucial to rural communities.

Praise God! I love this country.
Nice video. Would love to see some information about the different equipment, in particular the blue combine head that worked differently than the traditional style.
Known and a strip header. Has a roller with teeth or (fingers) that brush the seed off the plant. The header creates a vacuum suction and takes the seed in. Mostly used on standing rice where the heads can be stripped off easily.
What size LSWs were those?
Nice work !
Aerial Ag Thanks 🙏
What is the typical beginning of harvest season?
Field work normally begins mid to late March and planting in the beginning of April. That’s how it is normally in north East Arkansas

What moisture is it at harvest time. Do you have to send it to a dryer?
oakvillefarmer We usually harvest at 16-18% moisture. We only run fans on our grain-bins by the time we ship it of its around 12-13% moisture
Neels Saayman, thanks for the response. I’m in Oregon and wild rice is raised here but not white rice. We don’t have drying infrastructure so I was curious.
Neels Saayman do you think it could be put into a swath if the ground was dry enough to dry or would it shatter. We harvest at 10-13%
